PM Modi Launches Subsidised ‘Amma’ Two-Wheeler Scheme In Tamil Nadu

Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched the subsidised scooter scheme for working women on the occasion of the 70th birth anniversary celebrations of late Tamil Nadu leader J Jayalalithaa.

  • The beneficiaries included women who worked in the private sector, an accountant, a salesperson and an assistant in a private store.

Tamil Nadu Govt, Microsoft tie-up to accelerate cloud technology adoption

The government of Tamil Nadu announced signing an agreement with IT Major Microsoft to improve the integration of technology in teaching and learning in the state.

  • The partnership aims to reform education sector, build tech capacity and enhance digital literacy across all levels.

CII partnership summit begins in Vizag

The third Partnership Summit of the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) will began in Vizag, Andhra Pradesh, with over 2,000 delegates attending the meet. About 40 percent of the delegates belong to other countries.

Economic Times Global Business Summit held in New Delhi

The Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi, addressed the Economic Times Global Business Summit in New Delhi, on the theme: New Economy – New Rules.

  • The Prime Minister appealed that those entrusted with the responsibility of ensuring rules and ethics in various financial institutions, should work with full dedication – especially those who are responsible for supervising and monitoring.

Chhattisgarh to electrify all households by September

Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Raman Singh announced that the state government is aiming to provide power supply to every household by September 2018.

  • He further said that in the last 14 years, the state has established a new record in power generation, transmission and distribution.

Indo-Seychelles joint Army exercise begins 

The eighth joint military exercise between the Indian Army and Seychelles People’s Defence Forces began from February 24 in Seychelles. Indo-Seychelles counter insurgency/counter terrorism exercise is named ‘Lamitye’, which means friendship.

India, France to jointly hold ISA Summit in March

Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) Secretary Anand Kumar announced that Prime Minister Narendra Modi and France President Édouard Philippe will jointly hold an International Solar Alliance (ISA) Summit at the President house in New Delhi on March 11.

  • The head of governments, representatives and ministers from 50 countries will also be attending the event.

Assam to Observe ‘Rhino Day’ on September 22 

The Assam government has announced to observe September 22 as ‘Rhino Day’ to generate public awareness on protection of the one-horned pachyderm.

  • A State Rhino Project in line with National Rhino Project will be launched in Assam soon for protecting the pachyderms from threats of poaching.

UIDAI introduces special blue coloured ‘Baal Aadhaar’ for children below the age of 5

Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has now introduced a blue coloured ‘Baal Aadhaar’ card for children below the age of 5 years. To recall all children below the age of 5 don’t need to give biometric details for getting an Aadhaar card.

  • UIDAI said that a blue coloured Baal Aadhaar will be issued to children below 5 years and when the child does become 5, then he/she has to submit biometric authentication.
  • Failing to do so within the next 7 years would result in suspension of the Aadhaar card.


BANKING & FINANCE

RBI introduces Ombudsman Scheme for NBFCs

As announced in its Monetary Policy Statement on February 7, India’s central bank, Reserve Bank of India (RBI), has now launched the Ombudsman Scheme for Non-Banking Financial Companies (NBFCs).

  • The scheme will provide a cost-free and expeditious complaint redressal mechanism relating to deficiency in the services by NBFCs.
  • The offices of the NBFC Ombudsmen will function at four metro centres, namely, Chennai, Kolkata, Mumbai and New Delhi, and will handle complaints of customers in the respective zones.
  • The scheme will cover all deposit-taking NBFCs, and based on the experience gained, the RBI would extend the scheme to cover NBFCs having an asset size of Rs. One billion and above with customer interface.
  • The scheme shall come into effect and force from February 23, 2018.

RBI asks banks to link SWIFT to core banking by April 30

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has directed banks to link the SWIFT (Society for World Interbank Financial Telecommunication System platform) — a global financial messaging service which was miused by jeweller Nirav Modi at Punjab National bank — with the core banking solutions (CBS) of banks by April 30, 2018.

  • While the failure of SWIFT-CBS link led to the Rs 11,400 crore fraud at PNB, many banks are yet to establish the linkage.
  • Core banking refers to a centralised system established by a bank which allows its customers to conduct their business irrespective of the bank’s branch.
  • The SWIFT system promoted in 1973 by banks globally is used to transmit messages relating to cross border financial transactions.

Senior journalist Rahul Mahajan was appointed Editor-in-Chief of Rajya Sabha TV, owned and operated by the Upper House of Parliament.

Priyanka quits as brand ambassador for Nirav Modi’s brand

Actress Priyanka Chopra’s spokesperson has confirmed that she has quit as the global ambassador of jewellery designer Nirav Modi’s brand following allegations of money laundering against him.

  • The actress had earlier accused him of non-payment of dues for several advertisement campaigns. Nirav Modi is the prime accused in the $1.77 billion (₹11,400 crore) scam involving Punjab National Bank.

Senior journalist Neelabh Mishra passes away

Senior journalist and editor-in-chief of National Herald, Neelabh Mishra, has passed away. He was critically ill and with complications resulting from non-alcoholic liver cirrhosis.
