Centre to allocate ₹3,000 crore from PM CARES for ventilator supply, migrants welfare
The Government announced allocating ₹3,000 crore from the PM CARES Fund for supply of ventilators and for the welfare of migrant labourers. 

  • ₹2,000 crore will be spent in the procurement of 50,000 Made-in-India ventilators to government-run Covid hospitals in all States/Union Territories (UTs).
  • Further, ₹1,000 crore has already been released to States/UTs for the welfare of migrant labourers.

Jharkhand govt launches Jharkhand Mukhyamantri SHRAMIK Yojana Job Card for Urban Poor
The Jharkhand government has launched an employment guarantee scheme for the urban unskilled workers. The scheme will be on similar lines of Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA).

  • The scheme called Mukhyamantri Shramik Yojna will guarantee 100 days of work in a financial year for urban unskilled labourers.
  • The new scheme would have a provision to pay an unemployment allowance if the state fails to provide 100 days of work

RBI extends Rs 50,000-crore special liquidity facility to Yes Bank for 3 more months 
The Reserve Bank of India has extended by three months a special liquidity window for Yes Bank Ltd. to help the private lender cover for any shortfall in deposits, according to a person aware of the development.

  • The bank can access the Rs 50,000-crore liquidity window if outflow of deposits exceeds the accretion of fresh deposits, the person said on condition of anonymity.


BUSINESS & ECONOMY

Moody’s projects India GDP to shrink 3.1% in 2020
Moody’s Investors Service projected the Indian economy to shrink 3.1 per cent in 2020 and said clashes with China on the border also suggest rising geopolitical risks in the Asian region where countries are particularly vulnerable to changes in geopolitical dynamics.

  • While it pegged India’s annual growth at 0.2 per cent in April, the forecast has been sharply revised after taking into consideration the disruptions due to the coronavirus pandemic.
  • However, Moody’s expects the economy to register 6.9 per cent growth in 2021

Wasim Jaffer appointed head coach of Uttarakhand cricket team
Former India opener and domestic stalwart Wasim Jaffer has been appointed head coach of the Uttarakhand cricket team for the upcoming domestic season.

  • This will be his first stint as a head coach with a team.


SCIENCE & TECHNOLOGY

China launches final Beidou satellite to complete GPS-like navigation system
China successfully launched the final member in its Beidou satellite constellation completing a new global navigation system decades in the making.

  • A Long March 3B rocket launched the final Beidou Navigation Satellite (BDS) into orbit from the Xichang Satellite Launch Center in southwest China.
  • This was the last satellite in the third version of the BDS and the 55th in the BeiDou satellite constellation.

HRD Minister launches ‘YUKTI 2.0’ platform for educational institutes
Union Minister of Human Resource Development, Shri Ramesh Pokhriyal ‘Nishank’ launched an initiative ‘YUKTI 2.0(Young India combating COVID with Knowledge, Technology and Innovation) ‘ to help systematically assimilate technologies having commercial potential and information related to incubated startups in our higher education institutions.

  • The new portal will be a one-stop of all ideas, innovation, and contributions from students as well as teachers.
  •  The depository is being called Yukti 2.0 by the MHRD and will be available for the disposal of anyone willing to expand their knowledge horizon.

IIT-Bombay develops chip Dhruva to be used in smartphones and navigation devices to find locations
IIT-Bombay has developed a homegrown receiver chip called Dhruva that can be used in smartphones and navigation devices to find locations and routes within the country.

  • Dhruva will receive signals from India’s NAVIC group of navigation satellites as well as the US Global Positioning System-based satellites to determine these accurately under all weather conditions.
  • It can receive in multiple frequency bands and handle weak signals.
  • Besides, it can be converted into digital bits and processed by any standard digital signal processor (DSP) to determine one’s location precisely.


OBITUARIES

Karnataka basketball player K Raghunath passes away
The Former basketball star player from Karnataka state K Raghunath has passed away due to age-related complications. He was 74.

  • He was known as one of the founding members of the still-popular Beagles Basketball Club.
  • The point guard was part of the Bangalore University team for five years, including a couple as captain, and won three championships with the side.
