Uttar Pradesh assembly makes history with day reserved for women MLAs
The Uttar Pradesh Legislature made history after both the Houses decided to reserve the day for women legislators to speak. The move was met with praise from both the ruling and opposition parties.

• The session commenced with opening remarks by Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath. He said that the government has been working towards the upliftment of women.
• He said equality for women started from the very first election where women were given equal rights.

India’s first plant-based meat shipped to the US from Gujarat
The Centre through apex export promotion body, Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Authority (APEDA) facilitated the export of first consignment of plant-based meat products under vegan food category from Nadiad in Gujarat to California, US.

• The 5,000 kg consignment consisted of mini samosas, hot and spicy strips, momos, spring rolls, nuggets, and grilled patty, among other products, the Ministry of Commerce & Industry said.

TerraPay, NPCI collaborate for merchant payments via UPI-enabled QR codes
In a strategic move to further strengthen its cross-border payment solutions, TerraPay, a leading global payments infrastructure group  announced its partnership with NPCI International Payments Limited (NIPL), the International arm of National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI).

• This association with NIPL will allow Indian customers and merchants in India with an active Unified Payments Interface Id (UPI Id) to make and accept cross-border payments seamlessly by leveraging TerraPay’s agile infrastructure and the UPI network.
• Together, both companies intend to fortify UPI payments & QR solutions to extract their maximum potential. The partnership will further increase the use of UPI and QR for cross-border merchant payments.

BUSINESS & ECONOMY

India is third largest market for Lladro
The Indian market has surpassed Spain to emerge as the third largest market for iconic Spanish porcelain brand Lladro-after Japan and the US-as a sharp rebound in sales in 2022 catapulted the India business into one of the fastest growing in the world.

• As part of its growth story, the Valencia, Spain-headquartered company plans to open three new stores in India in the next 18-24 months.
• Currently, the company operates seven stores in the country, and Delhi NCR, Mumbai, and Bengaluru are the top contributing cities for the brand, followed by Kolkata, Hyderabad and Chennai.

APPOINTMENTS

SC appoints ex-judge Justice L Nageswara Rao for amending constitution of IOA
The Supreme Court assigned its former judge, Justice L. Nageswara Rao, the task to head an effort to amend the Constitution of the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) and prepare a road map to elections.

• The order came amid India’s run-up to the National Games scheduled in Gujarat.
• A Bench led by Justice D.Y. Chandrachud urged Justice Rao to take up the assignment and ensure a fair and development-oriented approach for the future of Olympic sports in the country.

Anil Khanna resigns as Indian Olympic Association acting president
Senior sports administrator Anil Khanna resigned as acting president of the Indian Olympic Association (IOA), saying he respects the views of the International Olympic Committee (IOC).

• The International Olympic Committee (IOC) had, on September 8, issued a suspension threat, saying the IOA must hold elections by December this year.
• Mr. Khanna took charge of IOA after a court ruling ended Narinder Batra’s reign as chief of the apex sports body in the country.

Gautam Adani tops IIFL Wealth Hurun list of richest Indians
Gautam Adani, chairman of the Adani Group has topped the IIFL Wealth Hurun list of India’s richest Indians in 2022, with Reliance Industries’ Mukesh Ambani securing the second position. Adani has moved into the top spot and is the richest man in India with a wealth of Rs 10.94 lakh crore.

• Cyrus S Poonawalla of Serum Institute of India secured the third position on the list with his wealth increasing by Rs 41,700 crore in the last one year.
• Shiv Nadar, Radhakrishnan Damani, and Vinod Shantilal Adani were at the fourth, fifth, and sixth position on the list respectively. Dilip Shanghvi, Uday Kotak re-entered among the top 10 in the list, while Jay Chaudhary, KM Birla moved lower.

SCIENCE &TECHNOLOGY

Chinese Scientists create World’s first cloned Arctic Wolf
Biotechnology has improved exponentially in recent times, with several breakthroughs and new discoveries. Now, scientists in China have successfully created the world’s first cloned arctic wolf. The clone was developed by researchers working for a Beijing-based gene firm, Sinogene Biotechnology Co. Ltd.

• The clone’s surrogate mother was chosen to be a beagle since this breed shares a genetic ancestry with the white wolf, reported The Global Times.
• The newly cloned wolf-pup has been named Maya. The donor cell came from a skin sample of a wild female Arctic Wolf and its oocyte from a dog.

India’s first full-arm transplant performed at Kerala’s Amrita Hospital
A private hospital in Kerala has achieved a rare feat by conducting India’s first shoulder-level full-arm transplant this week.

• Two patients, one from Karnataka and another from Iraq, who lost both their hands due to electric shock, have successfully undergone bilateral hand transplants at Amrita Hospital, Kochi. The limbs were harvested from donors who were victims of fatal road accidents in Kerala.
• According to doctors, shoulder-level full-arm transplants are quite rare. In fact, this is only the third such surgery in the world. There are profound technical issues in a shoulder-level transplant, especially fixing the donated upper limb to the shoulder of the recipient.

OBITUARIES

Valeri Polyakov, record-breaking cosmonaut, passes away
Cosmonaut Valery Vladimirovich Polyakov, who holds the record for the longest single stay in space, has died at age 80, Russian space agency Roscosmos announced.

• Born on April 27, 1942, the Russian cosmonaut lived and worked in space for a record 437 days in one stint — orbiting Earth aboard the Mir space station more than 7,000 times between January 8, 1994 and March 22, 1995.
• Polyakov undertook two space expeditions during his career, with a total duration of 678 days and 16 hours, according to Roscosmos.
