Ind-Ukraine Chamber of Commerce to be set up 
An India-Ukraine Chamber of Commerce will be established in the upcoming months in an effort to strengthen commercial ties. The Chamber will work to increase opportunities for investment and cooperation in industries including infrastructure and power with the help of the Ukrainian government.

  • The event happened after Emine Dzhaparova, Ukraine’s first deputy foreign minister, visited India.
  • Dzhaparova recommended during the tour that Indian infrastructure companies take part in the restoration of Ukraine, which is at war with Russia.

PM Modi launches India’s 1st water metro in Kerala that connects 10 islands
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who is on a two-day Kerala visit, flaged off India’s first water metro that connects 10 islands around Kochi through battery-operated electric hybrid boats for seamless connectivity with the city.

  • The metro project will start with eight electric hybrid boats developed under Cochin Shipyard Limited. The Kerala government and the German company KfW are funding this dream project. It consists of 38 terminals and 78 electric boats.
  • The KWM service will launch in the first phase from the High Court-Vypin and Vyttila-Kakkanad terminals. The tickets for the boat trip start at Rs 20. For frequent travellers, there are weekly and monthly passes available.


INTERNATIONAL NEWS

India 4th biggest military spender in world: SIPRI
India, which has sharpened its focus on building its defence capabilities and strengthening military infrastructure along the China border, was the fourth biggest military spender in the world in 2022 after the United States, China and Russia, the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (Sipri) said in a report published.

  • Saudi Arabia was in fifth place. The five countries accounted for 63% of the world’s military spending.India’s military spending of $81.4 billion was the fourth highest in the world. It was 6% more than in 2021 and up by 47% from 2013.
  • India allocated Rs.5.25 lakh crore for military spending in last year’s budget, ₹4.78 lakh crore in 2021-22, and Rs.4.71 lakh crore the year before. The increase in India’s spending shows the effects of its border tensions with China and Pakistan,” the Sipri report said.

Locked Shields” cyber-defense exercise 2023 to be held by NATO in Tallinn
Over 3000 participants from 38 countries – including, the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) Allies and partners – participated in the 2023 edition of the annual exercise “Locked Shields,” hosted by the NATO Cooperative Cyber Defence Centre of Excellence in Tallinn (Estonia).

  • “Locked Shields” is the world’s largest cyber defence exercise. It started on 18 April 2023 and involved protecting computer

Zimbabwe to Introduce Gold-Backed Digital Currency
To combat the falling value of the Zimbabwean currency, the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe (RBZ) has announced plans to introduce a gold-backed digital currency. The digital gold tokens will be a form of electronic money, backed by gold held at the RBI.

  • This will enable holders of small amounts of Zimbabwean dollars to exchange their money for tokens and protect themselves against exchange rate fluctuations.
  • The Zimbabwean economy operates on a dual currency structure, with the Zimbabwean dollar and the U.S. dollar in use. The U.S. dollar currently dominates and accounts for about 70% of domestic transactions, according to the RBZ.

Union Minister Sonowal inaugurates the technology arm of Shipping Ministry in TN. Union Ports, Shipping and Waterways Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, who inaugurated the National Technology Centre for Ports, Waterways & Coasts (NTCPWC) at the Discovery Campus of IIT, Madras. 

  • The centre will enable Make In India tech solutions for the sector and propel overall growth. The Discovery Campus was set up in February 2018 on 163-acre area of the IIT Madras, and is located at Thaiyur, about 36 km from the main campus at Guindy.

Uneecops Technologies set to establish First Green Hydrogen Microgrid of 25Kw in Leh
Uneecops Technologies, a Delhi-based green hydrogen and solar developer, has won the engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) contract for setting up a green hydrogen-based fuel cell microgrid of 25 kW capacity at Alchi in the Leh region. The project will be developed at a high altitude of 3,200 meters.

  • Uneecops will also be responsible for the operation and maintenance of the project for three years to ensure the smooth and uninterrupted operation of the microgrid.
  • The project will supply power to a major hydro-power company’s guest house at the power station in the area, the company said.

‘RAMBAAN’, India’s first BSL-3 Mobile Lab displayed at G20 Meeting in Goa
India’s first mobile BSL-3 laboratory was displayed at the 2nd G20 Health Working Group Meeting in Goa’s Panaji.

  • Notably, the Made-in-India mobile clinic initiative Rapid Action Mobile BSL3+ Advanced Augmented Network (RAMBAAN) is India’s first state-of-the-art health infrastructure for pandemic preparedness.
  • The mobile laboratory can be used to reach remote regions to carry out testing. A test report can be instantly generated because of GPS-enabled technology.


IMPORTANT DAYS

Bengaluru witnessed Zero Shadow Day  across the city
On April 25, Bengaluru, India’s technological hub, is poised to witness a unique celestial event known as “Zero Shadow Day,” according to the Astronomical Society of India (ASI).

  • During this event, any vertical objects in the city will not cast any shadows, due to the sun’s position directly overhead. The phenomenon is expected to occur at around 12:17 PM and will last for a brief period.
  • The Indian Institute of Astrophysics (IIA) in Koramangala, Bengaluru, has made arrangements to observe the event, while citizens across the city are also geared up to witness it.

Gujarat celebrates 20 years of PM Modi’s Swagat Initiative
Gujarat CM Bhupendra Patel has declared the last week of April as “Swagat Saptah” in commemoration of the completion of 20 years of the “State Wide Attention on Grievances by Application of Technology” (SWAGAT) initiative, which was launched by Narendra Modi during his tenure as the Chief Minister of Gujarat in 2003.

  • As part of this initiative, a technology-based system was developed to address grievances, and on the last Thursday of each month, the Chief Minister personally listens to the complaints of citizens in the presence of relevant officials.
