NATIONAL NEWS

India’s first AC suburban train flagged off in Mumbai

The country’s first AC local left Borivali station for its maiden journey to Churchgate in Mumbai on 25th December, 2017. The train had a good response and ran almost packed with passengers from 6-year-old to senior citizens enjoying the ride. 

  • Initially, it was meant to be run on the Central Railway (CR) corridor. However, later it was decided to run it first on the WR corridor.

With 24% share in cess, Maharashtra, UP top list in GST collection

Comprising about 24 per cent of the total cess collections of Rs 30,224 crore under the Goods and Services Tax (GST) regime, Maharashtra and Uttar Pradesh are the top contributors among states and Union Territories in the first five months of the rollout of the GST regime.

  • Maharashtra garnered Rs 3,702 crore and Uttar Pradesh collected Rs 3,549 crore through cess levied on sin and luxury goods since the July 1 rollout of the new indirect tax regime.

Bengaluru becomes first Indian city to have its own logo

Karnataka’s capital city Bengaluru has become the first Indian city to have its own logo. The logo was designed by a design start-up and uses both English and Kannada alphabets. Adding that Bengaluru has a vibrant culture, the designers said, “We wanted the ‘Be’ and ‘u’ to stand out.”

Odisha recognised as ‘champion state’ in exports growth

The Centre has recognised Odisha as “champion state” for recording highest growth in exports during 2016-17. The commerce ministry announced that Odisha’s export volume has been increased from Rs 19, 082 crores in 2015-16 to Rs 40,872 crore in 2016-17. 

India’s First Runway on ‘Sea Bridge’ to be Built at Agatti Airport

India is all set to get its first runway on a ‘sea bridge’ soon, as the Airports Authority of India (AAI) has been given a nod to extend Lakshadweep’s Agatti Airport

  • Agatti could be India’s first runway-on-sea bridge. The same plan was considered for Juhu airport in Mumbai and Kullu but, could not be initiated as it wasn’t found suitable.

Two Day Regional Conference on Good Governance concludes in Guwahati

The two-day Regional Conference on Good Governance and Replication of Best Practices concluded in Guwahati, Assam. The Conference is an effort to create a common platform to share experiences in the formulation and implementation of citizen centric governance, and improved public service delivery.

UN to mark Mandela’s 100th birthday with a peace summit

The UN General Assembly has decided to mark the 100th anniversary of Nelson Mandela’s birth by holding a high-level meeting focusing on world peace ahead of the annual gathering of world leaders in September 2018. The summit will be called  “Nelson Mandela Peace Summit” will include speeches by top UN officials, the chair of the African Union Commission and member states.

Belgium appoints world’s first-ever female ambassador to Saudi Arabia

For the first time ever, a foreign nation has appointed a woman to be its ambassador to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Dominique Mineur, who currently serves as the European nation’s ambassador to the UAE – will transfer to Riyadh next summer. The move comes as Saudi Arabia continues to undergo a series of rapid social reforms and progress. 



ECONOMY

India’s GDP growth may rebound to 7.5% in 2018: Nomura

According to Japanese financial services major Nomura’s Composite Leading Index (CLI), Indian economy is expected to witness a sharp recovery in the January-March quarter and its GDP growth likely to be around 7.5 per cent for 2018.

India finish runners-up in SAFF U15 Women’s Championship

India finished runners-up after going down 1-0 to Bangladesh in the final of the SAFF U15 Women’s Championship in Dhaka, Bangladesh.

Bengali film icon Partha Mukhopadhyay passes away at 70

Iconic Bengali actor Partha Mukhopadhyay has passed away after a cardiac arrest. He was 70.

Good Governance Day: 25 December 

Former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee’s birthday is being celebrated as Good Governance Day across the country on 25th December. Good Governance Day was established in 2014 to honor Mr Vajpayee by fostering awareness among the people of accountability in government.
