NATIONAL NEWS

Senior IPS officer Dinkar Gupta appointed Director General of NIA
Former Punjab DGP Dinkar Gupta took over the charge of a full-fledged Director-General of the National Investigation Agency (NIA)– the post which was vacant since May last year after the retirement of YC Modi.

  • The 1987-batch Indian Police Service (IPS) officer of Punjab cadre took over the charge from Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) Director General Kuldiep Singh, a 1986-batch West Bengal cadre IPS officer, who was handling the additional charge of the NIA since the retirement of Modi.

Gujarat CM launches 17th ‘Shala Praveshotsav’
In Gujarat, the Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel launched the 17th ‘Shala Praveshotsav’, the drive to enrol students in primary schools in the state. The three-day enrollment drive begins from Memadpur primary school in Vadgam taluka of Banaskantha district.

  • He said that the drop out rate has been reduced to just 3.07 percent from 37.22 percent in 2002. He said that the priority of the state government is to see that every child has access to education.

Garib Kalyan Rojgar Abhiyaan completes two years
Government of India launched GKRA on 20th June in 2020 for a period of 125 days with a resource envelope of 50,000 crore rupees to boost employment and livelihood opportunities for returnee migrant workers in the wake of COVID-19 pandemic.

  • The objectives of the Abhiyaan were to provide immediate employment and livelihood opportunities to the distressed, to saturate the villages with public infrastructure and to create public assets to boost the income generation activities and enhance long term livelihood opportunities by giving focus on 25 works in 116 selected districts across six states Bihar, Jharkhand, Madhya Pradesh, Odisha, Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh.
  • A total of 12 Ministries and Departments of Government of India participated in the Abhiyaan. A total of 50.78 crore person-days employment was generated during the Abhiyaan.

PM inaugurates ‘Vanijya Bhawan’ and launches NIRYAT portal
Inaugurating the new premises of Ministry of Commerce and Industry – ‘Vanijya Bhawan’, Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched new portal NIRYAT (National Import-Export Record for Yearly Analysis of Trade) – a one-stop place for all info needed on India’s foreign trade.

  • NIRYAT portal, which will dedicatedly deal with the import and export analysis of India. NIRYAT, or the National Import-Export Record for Yearly Analysis of Trade, has been launched by the government to provide important real-time data to all stakeholders, Modi said after launching the portal.
  • NIRYAT has been pegged as a one-stop platform for stakeholders for easy access to critical information related to India’s foreign trade by the Centre.

India’s life expectancy at birth grows by 2 years to 69.7 
India’s life expectancy at birth has increased up to 69.7 in the 2015-2019 period, data from the sample registration system (SRS) shows. The country’s life expectancy at birth, which has inched up after 10 years, is still well below the global average of 72.6.

  • The data released by the demographic survey suggests that high infant mortality and under-five mortality could be one of the reasons India finds it difficult to raise life expectancy at birth. The gap between life expectancy at birth and life expectancy at age one or age five is biggest in states with the highest infant mortality rate (IMR) – Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh.
  • In Madhya Pradesh, which has the highest IMR of 43, surviving the first year after birth raises life expectancy by 2.7 years. In Uttar Pradesh, with the second highest IMR of 38, life expectancy jumps the highest, by 3.4 years, on completion of first year. Such gaps between life expectancy at birth and at year one can also be seen in other states such as Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh, Gujarat, Assam and Odisha.
  • India has added 20 years to its life expectancy at birth from 49.7 in 1970-75 to 69.7 in 2015-2019.

India needs $223 bn to meet 2030 renewable capacity goals
As per a BloombergNEF (BNEF) report, India will need $223 billion of investment to meet the target of wind and solar capacity installations up to 500GW by 2030.

  • Central Electricity Authority (CEA) has said that India’s dependence on coal could drop from 53 per cent of installed capacity last year to 33 per cent in 2030.At the same time, solar and wind will together make up 51 per cent of this capacity, a marked increase from 23 percent in 2021.
  • Published in association with the Power Foundation of India, the report named ‘Financing India’s 2030 Renewables Ambition’, mentioned that the Indian corporate houses could be of great help to achieve 86 per cent of its 2030 goals that entail achieving 500GW of cumulative renewable energy generation capacity.

Delhi govt in partnership with UNDP set up oxygen generation plant at G B Pant Hospital in national capital
Delhi Government in partnership with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) India, has set up an oxygen generation plant at G. B. Pant Hospital in the national capital to augment the oxygen supply capabilities.

  • The oxygen plant utilises pressure swing adsorption (PSA) technology to produce over one thousand liters of oxygen per minute. It will serve approximately 750 hospital beds, including those supported by ventilators and the Intensive Care Unit.
  • The hospital is a super-specialty tertiary care centre and manages referrals from across the country.

BLS International secured contract from Directorate of Registration and Stamp Revenue, Govt. of West Bengal
BLS International Services has been selected by Directorate of Registration and Stamp Revenue, Govt. of West Bengal for computerization and e-Governance of Registration offices in West Bengal in PPP mode in Presidency Zone.

  • In this project, the company will procure, install & commission the hardware for 81 offices under Presidency Zone.
  • Deployment of manpower, management and maintenance of manpower & hardware will be done for 5 years. BLS will process 700,000 transactions per annum in this project.


INTERNATIONAL NEWS

Delhi ranks 112 among best liveable cities in world, Mumbai at 117th position
The cities in India have fared poorly in the list of the world’s most liveable cities. India’s national capital New Delhi has been ranked 112th in the list of most liveable cities. While India’s financial capital Mumbai is ranked at 117th position

  • Austrian capital Vienna has once again topped the list of most liveable cities in the world in the list of 140 cities. Earlier, New Zealand’s capital Auckland had snatched the top place from Vienna in view of the coronavirus pandemic.
  • The Austrian capital was followed by the Danish capital Copenhagen and Switzerland’s Zurich. Swiss city Geneva came sixth, Germany’s Frankfurt seventh, and the Netherlands’ Amsterdam ninth.
  • According to Global Liveability Index released by The Economist annually, Auckland has been pushed to 38th spot. The report is made keeping in mind political and social stability, crime, education and health among other factors.

94% of domestic workers worldwide lack comprehensive social security
Only 6% of domestic workers worldwide have access to comprehensive social protection with women who constitute 76.2% of the total domestic workforce particularly more vulnerable in the absence of adequate social benefits, the International Labour Organization (ILO) said.

  • This leaves more than 94% lacking access to the full range of protections, covering medical care, sickness, unemployment, old age, employment injury, family, maternity, invalidity and survivors’ benefits.
  • According to the report, making the right to social security a reality for domestic workers, about half of all domestic workers have no coverage at all, with the remaining half legally covered by at least one benefit.

Shri Ramayana Yatra: First India-Nepal Bharat Gaurav tourist train reaches Janakpurdham
Shri Ramayana Yatra’s “Bharat Gaurav” tourist train with 14 coaches and 500 tourists onboard, which was jointly flagged off from New Delhi , reached Janakpurdham city in Nepal.

  • It is a first-of-its-kind tourist train covering the Ramayana circuit in India and Nepal. The Prime Ministers of India and Nepal had jointly flagged off a train connecting Jaynagar in India to Kurtha in Nepal on April 2, 2022.


BANKING & FINANCE

India reports CAD of 1.2% of GDP in FY22 on widening trade deficit: RBI
India witnessed a current account deficit of 1.2 per cent of GDP in 2021-22 against a surplus of 0.9 per cent in FY2020-21 due to a wider trade deficit, the Reserve Bank said.

  • For the January-March 2022 quarter, the CAD narrowed on a sequential basis to USD 13.4 billion or 1.5 per cent of GDP against USD 22.2 billion or 2.6 per cent of GDP in the December 2021 quarter.
  • Current account deficit occurs when the value of goods and services imported and other payments exceeds the value of export of goods and services and other receipts by a country in a particular period.

Collaboration with Banks for creation of integrated Pensioners’ Portal to enhance ‘Ease of Living’ of Pensioners
The Centre’s Department of Pension & Pensioners’ Welfare (DoPPW) will collaborate with the State Bank of India (SBI) to create an integrated pension portal to enhance ease of living of pensioners, according to an official statement.

  • Sessions on pension policy reforms and digitisation regarding the disbursement of pensions to central government pensioners were organised with the objective of updating SBI field functionaries during the two-day bankers’ awareness programme in Udaipur, Rajasthan.
  • Special sessions were organised on income tax matters related to pensioners as well as digital means of submitting annual life certificates, said the statement by the Ministry of Personnel, Public Grievances and Pensions.

ICICI Bank launches ‘Campus Power’ for the student ecosystem
ICICI Bank announced the launch of a digital platform to address the needs of the students aspiring to pursue higher education in India and abroad.

  • Called ‘Campus Power’, the one-stop platform is designed to assist entire student ecosystem comprising students, parents and institutes.
  • It offers both banking and value-added solutions at one place, eliminating the need for the student ecosystem to contact with multiple stakeholders. It is also available for customers of other banks.

World Bank approves $245 million loan to modernise India’s railway logistics infra
The World Bank has approved a USD 245 million loan to support India’s efforts to modernise rail freight and logistics infrastructure, the international financial institution.

  • The Rail Logistics project will help India shift more traffic from road to rail, making transport — both freight and passenger — more efficient and reducing millions of tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) each year.
  • The project will also incentivise more private sector investment in the railway sector.


BUSINESS & ECONOMY

Syngenta India launches price guarantee insurance scheme for chilli farmers 
In a unique move to empower the small and marginal farmers from the unfavorable price fluctuations due to unpredictable market conditions, Syngenta India has entered into an exclusive agreement with the Agriculture Insurance Company of India (AIC).

  • The agreement will facilitate guaranteeing a fair price to the chilli growers of Guntur by indemnifying them for losses incurred due to a fall in market prices. This is considered to be the first initiative in the market to insure the crop against the fluctuation of prices.
  • So far, the crop insurance schemes have been implemented to provide compensation to the growers when they lost the produce due to the natural calamities.

RBI appoints former SBI official on Srei’s advisory committee
Reserve Bank of India has appointed Venkat Nageswar Chalasani, former Deputy Managing Director, State Bank of India, as a member of the Advisory Committee of Srei Infrastructure Finance Limited and Srei Equipment Finance Limited (SEFL). 

  • RBI had constituted an Advisory panel under the Insolvency and Bankruptcy Rules, 2019, to advise the Administrator of Srei in the operations of the financial service providers during the corporate insolvency resolution process.
  • Chalasani has been appointed after R. Subramaniakumar retired from the Advisory Committee with effect from June 22, 2022,. Other members of the Advisory panel are T.T. Srinivasaraghavan, former Managing Director, Sundaram Finance Limited, and Farokh N Subedar, former Chief Operating Officer and Company Secretary, Tata Sons Limited.

Mongolia’s Khuvsgul lake added to UNESCO World Network of Biosphere Reserves
Khuvsul Lake National Park of Mangolia has been added to the World Network of Biosphere Reserve of UNESCO. The decision was made during the 34th session of the International Co-ordinating Council of the Man and the Biosphere Programme taking place in Paris, France. 

  • Khuvsgul Lake is located in the northern Mongolian province of Khuvsgul near the Russian border, holding nearly 70 per cent of Mongolia’s fresh water, or 0.4 per cent of the world’s total.


SCIENCE &  TECHNOLOGY

China launches new batch of three remote sensing satellites
China successfully launched three new remote sensing satellites from the Xichang Satellite Launch Centre in southwest China’s Sichuan Province

  • The satellites were launched as the second batch of the Yaogan-35 family by a Long March-2D carrier rocket and entered the planned orbit successfully.
  • The satellites will be mainly used to conduct science experiments, land resource surveys, yield estimation of agricultural products and disaster prevention and reduction, state-run Xinhua news agency reported.
