Government launches Saubhagya scheme for household electrification

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has launched Sahaj Bijli Har Ghar Yojana or ‘Saubhagya’, to supply electricity to poor households. The scheme will cover all rural families after electrification of all villages by December end, this year.

  • The government said that states will be required to complete the household electrification by March 31, 2019.
  • The total outlay for the Saubhagya scheme will be Rs 16,320 crore. The rural household outlay is estimated to be Rs 14025cr, with Rs 2295cr being for urban households. Click here to read further.

PM Modi forms Economic Advisory Council headed by Bibek Debroy

Amidst growing apprehensions over the slowdown in the Indian economy, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced the formation of a five-member panel of economists headed by NITI Aayog member Bibek Debroy to advise him.

  • The Economic Advisory Council will be an independent body for giving advice on economic and related issues to the government, especially to the Prime minister.
  • The panel will analyse issues, “economic or otherwise, referred to it by the Prime Minister”, and will advise him on it.

India, US, Afghanistan Join Hands for 1st Trade Show in Delhi

For the first time, India, US and Afghanistan will hold a joint trade and investment show in Delhi, as New Delhi steps up to its role of being a bigger development partner to Afghanistan.

  • The trade event, sponsored by the US and hosted by India, will be inaugurated by Afghan CEO Dr Abdullah. Abdullah’s visit will follow the first visit to India by US defence secretary James Mattis who will be holding high level talks with India on the Trump Administration’s new South Asia policy.

India third in nuclear power installations: study

According to the World Nuclear Industry Status Report 2017, India is third in the world in the number of nuclear reactors being installed, at 6, while China is leading at 20.

  • The number of nuclear reactor units under construction is, however, declining globally for the fourth year in a row, from 68 reactors at the end of 2013 to 53 by mid-2017. In India itself, five out of the six reactors under construction is behind schedule.

Railway line connecting India, Nepal to become functional from next year

After remaining non-functional for the last three years the Janakpur-Jayanagar Railway line connecting Nepal and India is expected to become functional by 2018.

  • It is the only railway line that once used to link India with Nepal but after 2014 its service got discontinued.
  • However, now both the neighboring countries are making an attempt to revive this railway service.

Hyderabad’s airport first to have wheel-chair lifts in India

GMR Hyderabad International Airport Ltd. (GHIAL) has launched a wheelchair lift or verti-lift for the benefit of people who had trouble before, while travelling through the airlines.

  • With this it has become first in the country to offer a lift for senior citizens and passengers with less mobility. To minimize the wait time at the elevators, the verti-lift solution has been introduced at the airport

V-409, A New Interceptor Boat Launched

A new interceptor boat V-409 built by Bharati Defence and infrastructure limited was launched at Mangalore. The objective of the boat is to provide coastal security.


7th ASEM Economic Minister’s Meeting Held in South Korea

The 7th ASEM (Asia–Europe Meeting) Economic Ministers’ Meeting was held in Seoul, South Korea. Theme for this year’s meeting was ‘Innovative Partnership for Inclusive Prosperity’. Commerce Minister Mr. Suresh Prabhu represented India.

World’s smallest squirrel discovered in Indonesia

Indonesian scientists have found the world’s smallest squirrel in the country’s Borneo rain forest. The Bormean pigmy squirrel or exilisciurus exilis was found in Meratus mountain of South Kalimantan province.


SBI introduces AI-based chat assistant

The State Bank of India (SBI) announced SBI Intelligent Assistant (SIA) — a chat assistant aimed to address customer enquiries like a “bank representative” does.

  • Developed by Payjo, an artificial intelligence (AI) banking platform, “SIA” is equipped to handle nearly 10,000 enquiries per second or 864 million in a day — which is nearly 25 per cent of the queries processed by Google each day.
  • The chat assistant would be available across multiple customer touchpoints like mobile, IVR, SMS and social media platforms. “SIA” would also be enabled to interact in most regional languages.

IDBI Bank sells 1 pc stake in Sidbi

State-owned IDBI Bank has sold 1% stake in Small Industries Development Bank of India (Sidbi) for an undisclosed amount in a bid to mobilise funds by exiting non-core business. Without disclosing the name of the buyer, the bank said, the sale took place on September 22.

  • Sidbi was originally 100 per cent owned by IDBI, when it was a term lending institution. Later in 2000, it divested 51 per cent stake in favour of government owned banks and insurance companies.

Irdai panel to help move to risk-based capital norms in 3 years

Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India (Irdai) has formed a ten-member steering committee to help implement by March 2021 the new risk-based capital (RBC) regime that will also enhance protection to policyholders.

  • The RBC committee headed by Dilip C Chakraborty in its report to Irdai suggested that the industry should move ahead with RBC to ensure that capital held by a company will take into account its overall risk profile.

Japan to fund mass rapid transit systems in Gujarat, Haryana

So far, the Delhi-Mumbai Industrial Corridor (DMIC) mega-project was being developed only with the Indian government’s financial assistance.

  • Now a $4.5 billion soft loan from Japan International Cooperation Agency will be used to boost $100 bn Delhi-Mumbai Industrial Corridor project.
  • The DMIC spans six States (Uttar Pradesh, Delhi National Capital Region, Haryana, Rajasthan, Gujarat and Maharashtra).

RIL jumps five places to rank as world’s third largest energy firm

Reliance Industries Ltd has jumped five places to rank as the world’s third-biggest energy company behind Russian gas firm Gazrpom and German utility E.ON, according to Platts Top 250 Global Energy Company Rankings.

  • Oil and Natural Gas Corp (ONGC) was placed at 11th position in 2017 as against 20th in 2016.


India Becomes World No. 1 in Both ODIs and Tests

India beat Australia by 5 wickets in the third ODI played between the two sides at Indore. The victory helped them to pip South Africa to claim the no. 1 spot in the ICC ODI rankings.

  • This now means that India is now at the top of both the Test and ODI rankings. This was India’s ninth consecutive ODI win while it is Australia 11ts successive defeat away from home.

Indian wrestler Bajrang bags gold in Asian Indoor Games

Indian wrestler Bajrang defeated Daichi Takatani of Japan in the men’s freestyle 65kg final to win the gold in the 5th Asian Indoor and Martial Arts Games at Ashgabat in Turkmenistan.

Laver Cup 2017: Roger Federer & Rafael Nadal win first doubles match

Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal played as doubles partners for the first time on the second day of the inaugural Laver Cup in Prague.

  • They beat Americans Sam Querrey and Jack Sock to win Laver Cup 2017 in men’s doubles.
  • Also, Roger Federer, ranked No. 2 in the world, defeated Australia’s Nick Kyrgios to win men’s singles in Laver Cup 2017.


Woman elected to Mizoram council of ministers for first time in 30 years

Lalawmpuii Chawngthu has become the second woman in Mizoram to be inducted in the state’s council of ministers after a gap of 30 years. Lalhlimpui Hmar was the first woman Minister of State in Mizoram in 1987.

Former Union Home Secretary Rajiv Mehrishi has been sworned in as the Comptroller and Auditor-General of India on 25th September.

An 18 year old from Srinagar becomes an ambassador for Swachhata Hi Seva

Bilal Dar, a young boy from Srinagar has become the brand ambassador for Srinagar Municipal Corporation. Dar has been contributing to the ‘Swachhta Abhiyan’ since the age of 12. He found a mention in the PM’s recent Mann Ki Baat on 24th September 2017.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel has won a fourth term in office by winning Germany elections that lifted the far-right party Alternative for Germany into parliament for the first time since the immediate aftermath World War II.

Well-known journalist and Renowned Marathi writer Arun Sadhu has passed away at the age of 76.

Soul singer Charles Bradley dies aged 68

Charles Bradley, the legendary soul singer has passed away. Charles Edward Bradley was an American funk, soul and R&B singer.
