Bharat Parv begins at Red Fort in Delhi

As part of the Republic Day celebrations, cultural extravaganza Bharat Parv began at the Red Fort in Delhi. The prime objective of the event is to generate a patriotic mood, promote the rich cultural diversity of the country and to ensure wider participation of the general public.

  • The event includes display of Republic Day Parade Tableaux, Performances by the Armed Forces Bands, a Multi-Cuisine Food Court, Craft Mela, Cultural Performances from different regions of the country and Photo Exhibition by the Directorate of Advertising and Visual Publicity.

India, ASEAN tie up to enhance connectivity

India and the leaders of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) adopted the Delhi Declaration and underscored the commitment to enhance physical and digital connectivity.

  • The 10 leaders reaffirmed their “commitment to enhance physical and digital connectivity in line with the MPAC 2025 and the AIM 2020 by, among others, availing of the US$1 billion line of credit announced by India to promote physical infrastructure and digital connectivity.”
  • India hosted a two-day India-ASEAN Commemorative Summit which was expected to give a boost to the cooperation in key areas of counter-terrorism, security and connectivity. The summit marks 25 years of Indo-ASEAN ties.

Punjab CM launches MGSVY for distressed sections of society

Punjab Chief Minister launched ‘Mahatma Gandhi Sarbat Vikas Yojana’, to release benefits and aimed at the inclusive growth of the distressed sections of the society. He appealed to the farmers not to resort to suicide since his government is committed to the total implementation of its farm debt waiver programme by November 2018.

Smart City Agra gets logo

The Agra Municipal Corporation has released a logo of Smart City Agra, showing the Taj Mahal and a peacock feather. The attractive design will be visible all over the city in a few days to build up a hype for involving the locals to participate in the Smart City race.

Three Indian cities feature in ‘Emerging World Cities’ category

After years of no show on the global annual survey, for the first time, three cities from India have featured amongst the top world order as a part of the ‘Emerging World Cities’ group.

  • This was revealed in JLL’s latest research entitled World Cities: Mapping the Pathways to Success, which shows that amongst the Emerging World Cities category, Delhi and Mumbai are deemed Megahubs while Bengaluru is high Enterprisers city.

India gifts ambulances, educational materials to Nepal

On the occasion of the 69th Republic Day, the Indian Mission in Nepal handed over 30 ambulances and six buses to various hospitals and non-profit charity organisations.

Small Finance and Payments banks to offer Atal Pension Yojana

The Central government has announced that the “Payments Banks and Small Finance Banks” will now offer social security scheme Atal Pension Yojana (APY) to their subscribers.

  • The Ministry of Finance said, “To strengthen the existing channels of APY distribution, it is felt that these new Payments Banks and Small Finance Banks will provide a boost to the outreach of subscribers under APY”.

UN, India invest $168m to boost tribal farming incomes

The UN International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) and the Indian government signed a $168 million pact to sustainably raise incomes and food security for tribal farming households in northeast India.

  • The six-year project will help 201,500 rural highland farming households in tribal villages in 12 districts located in the uplands of Mizoram and Nagaland States.
  • The target population is smallholder farmers who depend on rain-fed agriculture and a shifting cultivation system known as ‘jhum’ for their livelihoods.

50 names announced for PM’s Shram awards

The government has announced that the Prime Minister’s Shram Awards for 2016 are to be awarded to 50 workers with departmental undertakings, public sector undertakings and private sector units employing 500 or more workers.

  • Of these, 34 workers are from the public sector and 16 from the private sector.
  • Shram Awards are given in four categories — Shram Ratna Award, Shram Bhushan Award, Shram Vir/Shram Virangana and Shram Shree/Shram Devi Awards.
