Karnataka cabinet increases reservation for SC, ST community
The Karnataka cabinet, chaired by Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai, decided to promulgate an ordinance to raise reservations for Scheduled Castes (SCs) by 2 per cent and for Scheduled Tribes (STs) by 4 per cent.

  • The decision by the Karnataka government aims to uplift the ST/SC community in the state and provide adequate opportunities in the education and employment sector.
  • The initiative to increase the reservation for SC/STs by the state government implies that reservation will cross the Supreme Court’s 50 percent limit and go up to 55 percent in Karnataka.

Odisha’s Jeypore Airport gets license from DGCA
The Directorate General of Civil Aviation granted aerodrome licence to Odisha’s Jeypore airport. The airport will now be able to handle scheduled commercial flights under the government’s regional connectivity scheme UDAN, or Ude Desh ka Aam Naagrik.

  • The airstrip at Jeypore had became functional in 1962 at the time of inception of Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) at Sunabeda.
  • As of August 2022, Odisha has just one airport under UDAN – the Jharsuguda airport. Recently, the civil aviation ministry has been exploring more airstrips in Odisha for promoting wildlife and tourism in the state.


INTERNATIONAL NEWS

Diwali to be a holiday in New York City public schools from 2023
Diwali will be a holiday for the New York City public school starting next year in 2023, Mayor Eric Adams announced. Adams, joined by New York Assembly Member Jenifer Rajkumar, who had introduced the legislation to recognize Diwali as a holiday.

  • In the public school calendar, legislators decided to swap out Anniversary Day for Diwali. Anniversary Day is celebrated on the first Thursday in June.This had been a long pending demand of the Indian-American community.


BUSINESS & ECONOMY

India fines Google Rs.1337 crore for abusing its dominant position
The Competition Commission of India (CCI) slapped a penalty of Rs 936.44 crore ,the second in a span of seven days  on search engine giant Google for “abusing its dominant position with respect to its Play Store policies”.

  • The regulator has issued a cease-and-desist order, suggesting eight corrective measures including providing access to third-party billing payment processing systems on its Play Store.


SPORTS

Verstappen emerges as US Grand Prix winner
Dutch Formula 1 driver and 2022 champion Max Verstappen emerged victorious at the end of an action-packed United States Grand Prix, fending off Mercedes’ Lewis Hamilton in a tense finale, while his Red Bull team took their first constructors’ title since 2013.

  • Verstappen’s record-equalling 13th win of the season, and the squad’s championship triumph, came a day after Red Bull co-founder and owner Dietrich Mateschitz passed away — a fifth F1 constructors’ title.

Netherlands beats China, becomes India’s third-largest export market
The Netherlands has emerged as India’s third-largest export destination, ahead of China and Bangladesh. 

  • It has moved up two spots in the list of India’s top ten export destinations since 2021-22, due to a 106% increase in export from India until August this fiscal from a year before to $7.5 billion.
  • India’s exports to China contracted sharply by 35.6% until August this fiscal to $6.8 billion, while those to Bangladesh rose just 8.7% to $5.8 billion. In contrast, India’s merchandise exports to all destinations grew 19.5% in the first five months of this fiscal to $196.5 billion.

Ukrainian people wins EU’s 2022 Sakharov freedom prize
The European Parliament awarded the people of Ukraine its annual Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought to honour their fight against Russia’s invasion.

  • The award comes with prize money of 50,000 euros ($49,100), which will be distributed to representatives of Ukrainian civil society.
  • The prize, named after the late Soviet dissident Andrei Sakharov, has been awarded annually since 1988 to individuals and organizations defending human rights and fundamental freedoms.

Akshay Shah & Stephen Alter compiled and edited a new book “The Corbett Papers”
A new book “The Corbett Papers” has been co-edited by educator Akshay Shah and writer Stephen Alter.This book was published by Hachette India

  • This book has brought together lesser known parts of Jim Corbett’s life through unpublished letters, documents and a privately-published book.

Dr Bimal Jalan authored a book titled “From dependence to Self­Reliance”
Economist Dr Bimal Jalan authored the book “From dependence to Self­Reliance : Mapping India’s Rise as a Global Superpower”, a stocktaking of India’s growth trajectory, benefits from Bimal Jalan’s deep insights. 

  • The book is written lucidly, with the general reader in mind. Bimal Jalan breaks his book into 3 parts : 4 chapters on the economy, and 3 each on governance and politics. 
  • The primary focus shared by Bimal Jalan is to promote India’s national interests, irrespective of any party’s political agenda announced during elections.

Ministry of Education to organize ‘Kashi Tamil Sangamam’ programme
Union Education Ministry will organise ‘Kashi Tamil Sangamam’  a month-long programme from November 16th  to rediscover the centuries-old bond of knowledge and ancient civilisational linakage between Varanasi and Tamilnadu.

  • Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan informed that over 2400 tamil people in 12 groups from diverse sections of society, including acedemics, spiritualism, philosophy, trade and commerce, agriculture, entrepreneurship, arts and artisanship will visit Kashi for eight days to get familiarised with the ancient knowledge shared by these two ancient cities.
  • The programme will be organised under the framework of ‘Ek Bharat Shreshtha Bharat’ envisaged by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. IIT-Madras and Banaras Hindu University will be the hosting partners of this mega event.
