World Bank approved US$250 million for Skill India Mission Operation
The USD 250-million Skill India Mission Operation (SIMO), approved by the World Bank board of executive directors, will increase the market relevance of short-term skill development programmes (3-12 months or up to 600 hours) at the national and state level. The loan is funded by IBRD.
Krishnaswamy Kasturirangan to head the committee on New Education Policy (NEP)
The Human Resource Development (HRD) Ministry on Tuesday appointed a new nine-member panel, under the Chairmanship of eminent scientist Krishnaswamy Kasturirangan,who headed the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) from 1994 to 2003, to work on a New Education Policy (NEP).
USIBC sets up India task force on civil aviation
The US-India Business Council has constituted a task force to identify opportunities in the Indian Civil Aviation sector. The task force will be chaired by Palash Roy Chowdhury and will focus on identifying opportunities based on the National Civil Aviation Policy (NCAP).
India’s population to surpass China’s by 2030: UN report
India’s population is expected to surpass that of China, reaching 1.5 billion by 2030, according to the revised population estimates of the United Nations. China’s population currently at 1.41 billion compared to 1.34 billion of India. By 2024, both are expected to have roughly 1.44 billion people each.
- India’s population is projected to touch roughly 1.66 billion by 2050, declining to 1.51 billion by 2100.
- According to the report, between 2017 and 2050, half of the world’s population growth will be concentrated in nine countries — India, Nigeria, Congo, Pakistan, Ethiopia, Tanzania, America, Uganda and Indonesia.
China’s fastest: ‘Fuxing’ bullet train’ debuts on Beijing-Shanghai route
CHINA’S next generation bullet train “Fuxing” debuted on the Beijing-Shanghai line on Monday. The new bullet trains, also known as electric multiple units (EMU),boast top speeds of 400 kilometers an hour and a consistent speed of 350 kilometers an hour. The train was designed and manufactured by China.
Manushi Chhillar from Haryana wins the title of Miss India 2017
The 54th Femina Miss India World 2017 winner is Manushi Chhillar from Haryana, while the first runner-up is Sana Dua from Jammu and Kashmir and the second runner-up is Priyanka Kumari from Bihar.
Haryana village named after US President Trump
A nondescript village in Haryana was on Friday rechristened “Trump Sulabh Village” in a gesture to the American President ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s trip to Washington. NGO Sulabh International Social Service Organisation carried out the name-changing exercise.

India’s Yashaswini Singh Deswal has won a gold at the women’s 10 metre air pistol event in the ISSF Junior World Championship held in Suhl, Germany. China topped the medal tally, while India remained on second.
