NATIONAL NEWS

All trains to have bio-toilets by March 2019

The government said it plans to complete the work of installing bio-toilets in all passenger trains by March 2019.According to Ministry of Railways, approximately 55 per cent of the total passenger carrying coaches over Indian Railways have been equipped with bio-toilets.

India’s 1st pod taxi on the way, to follow U.S. safety norms

The much-awaited India’s first pod taxi project has moved a step closer to reality after a high-level panel recommended inviting fresh bids for the same conforming to the strictest safety standards on the lines of those prescribed by an American body.

  • The projected ₹4,000-crore pod taxi scheme — also known as Personal Rapid Transit (PRT) — is a dream project of Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari, and the NHAI has been mandated to execute it on Delhi-Gurgaon pilot corridor (12.3 km) from Delhi-Haryana border to Rajiv Chowk in Gurgaon on a PPP (public-private partnership) basis.

India provides medical assistance to Yemen

India has provided medical assistance worth about $1 million to Yemen in response to a request from the Yemeni government. As part of its commitment to provide humanitarian assistance to Yemen, India has been a member of the ‘Friends of Yemen’ Group

SDMC launches Atal Jan Aahar Yojana for poor to provide lunch at Rs 10

The South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC) has launched a new scheme for the poor that will allow them to buy meal for Rs 10 from the civic body’s kiosks during the day. The Atal Jan Aahar Yojana has been started to make a nutritious full meal accessible to the needy, in a phased manner. The scheme was started at kiosks in five different locations of south Delhi.

United Nations cuts budget by $286 million

The UN has approved a $286 million cut in its annual budget for the next year, a 5% “historic reduction in spending”. The General Assembly approved the regular budget of $5.397 billion for 2018-2019. The amount sets the budget level around $286 million (or 5%) below the final approved level for 2016- 2017, and $193 million below the initially proposed budget level for 2018-2019, including all “add-ons”.

Paytm becomes India’s first payments app to cross 100 mn downloads on Play Store

India’s largest mobile-first financial services platform, Paytm announced that its app has crossed the 100 million milestone on Google Play Store in the second week of December 2017.

  • This makes Paytm the country’s first payments app to cross the 100 million downloads mark.
  • Paytm has become the most preferred payments app in the country today, allowing users to scan its QR and pay at large merchants, grocery and kirana stores, milk-booths, local taxi/autos fares, petrol pumps, multiplexes, restaurants and more.

In a first, Saudi Arabia hosts World Chess Games

Saudi Arabia is hosting a world chess tournament for the first time, nearly two years after the country’s top cleric issued a religious edict against playing the board game. The tournament has been named as the King Salman World Rapid and Blitz Chess Championships.

Popular actor and vegetarian Anushka Sharma has been crowned the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals’ (PETA) 2017 Person of the Year Award. The actress has taken the title for her wide-reaching work for animals, from helping to protect dogs from fireworks to advocating for horses who are forced to pull carriages in Mumbai.

Veteran sports administrator Ashok Kumar Mattoo, who headed the national boxing and hockey federations at different times, has passed away after a prolonged illness.

Music legend Robbie Malinga passes away

Legendary South African musician Robbie Malinga has passed away. The veteran musician, who suffered from anaemia, announced his retirement as a solo artist in 2016, after more than 20 years in the industry.
