NATIONAL NEWS

Disabled voters, people older than 80 years can now vote through postal ballot

The disabled and people over 80 years of age can now cast their vote through postal ballot, the government said in a move that will help increase voter turnout.

  • At present, voting through postal ballot is available to armed forces and those assigned poll duties.
  • On the recommendation of the Election Commission, the Ministry of Law and Justice has amended the Conduct of Election Rules, 1961, on October 22, allowing senior citizens and person with disabilities in the absentee voter list.
  • The absentee voter refers to a vote cast by someone who is unable to go to the polling station.

Govt sets up panel to resolve MeitY and Niti fight over AI

The government has formed a committee headed by principal scientific advisor K VijayRaghavan to resolve differences between the Niti Aayog and the Ministry of Electronics and IT (MeitY) over who will implement its ambitious artificial intelligence mission.

Irdai sets up panel to evaluate application under regulatory sandbox

Insurance regulator Irdai has set up a committee under S Sadagopan, Director of International Institute of Information Technology (Bangalore) to evaluate applications filed under the Regulatory Sandbox approach to promote innovative ideas to foster growth in insurance sector.

  • Regulatory Sandbox (RS) usually refers to live testing of new products or services in a controlled/test regulatory environment for which regulators may permit certain relaxations for the limited purpose of testing.

India Ranks 57 in Global Health Security Index; US Tops

India has been placed at 57 position among 195 countries in the Global Health Security Index 2019 with a score of 46.5 out of 100.

  • The Global Health Security Index is the first comprehensive assessment of epidemic and pandemic threats globally. It has been prepared by the Nuclear Threat Initiative (NTI) and the Johns Hopkins University Center for Health Security, with research by The Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU).
  • The index has been topped by the United States with a score of 83.5, followed by the UK(77.9) and the Netherlands (75.6) in the second and third positions.

Cyclone Kyarr weakens: IMD issues orange alert in Kerala; heavy rainfall in Tamil Nadu

In the wake of Cyclone Kyarr, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted heavy rainfall in Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Lakshadweep. Kerala is already under orange alert indicating heavy to very heavy rainfall in Alappuzha, Ernakulam and Idukki districts of Kerala.

  • Cyclone Kyarr is the first super cyclonic storm in Arabian Sea in last 12 years. A red alert has been issued for Lakshadweep islands also.

UK’s Natural History Museum Names Blind Beetle after Climate Activist Greta Thunberg

Britain’s Natural History Museum named a tiny, blind and wingless beetle after climate activist Greta Thunberg.

  • The honey-coloured insect, measuring less than one millimetre, was discovered in the Kenyan capital Nairobi in the 1960s. But it apparently remained nameless until the venerable London museum’s scientific associate Michael Darby stepped in.


BANKING & FINANCE

NDB Board of Directors Approves Two Projects with Loans Aggregating to USD 800 mln

The Board of Directors of the New Development Bank (NDB) approved two projects worth USD 800 million, bringing the Bank’s portfolio to 44 projects with loans aggregating to USD 12.4 billion.

The following projects were approved:

  1. Fundo Clima Brazil National Climate Fund Project – The Bank will provide a sovereign loan of USD 500 million to the Federative Republic of Brazil for the Fundo Clima Brazil National Climate Fund Project.
  2. Renewable Energy Sector Development Project – The Bank will provide a loan of USD 300 million to REC Limited to support the Government of India’s increasing investment in the renewable energy sector.

ICC U19 Cricket World Cup 2020 to be held in South Africa

The International Cricket Council announced the schedule of the ICC U19 Cricket World Cup 2020, which will be held in South Africa from January 17 to February 10.

  • South Africa will open the tournament at The Diamond Oval on January 17.

Wang Hao Wins FIDE Chess.com Grand Swiss

Wang Hao of China defeated David Howell to win the FIDE Chess.com Grand Swiss in Isle of Man and qualify for the 2020 Candidates’ Tournament.

  • The top women’s prizes were shared by top seed Harika Dronavalli of India and Dinara Saduakassova of Kazakhstan.

Khattar takes oath as Haryana CM for second term, Dushyant Chautala as Deputy CM

Manohar Lal Khattar took oath as Haryana Chief Minister for the second term after the recently concluded polls in the state.

  • While BJP-ally Jannayak Janta Party (JJP) chief Dushyant Chautala took oath as Deputy Chief Minister of Haryana.

Botswana Election Won by President, Despite Rift with Predecessor

Voters in Botswana re-elected Mokgweetsi Masisi, a president who had received international attention for lifting a ban on hunting elephants and overseeing the decriminalization of homosexuality.

Veteran sports journalist KR Wadhwaney passes away

Veteran sports journalist KR Wadhwaney has passed away. He was 90. He remained active as a sports journalist for almost 50 years.

World Day for Audiovisual Heritage is celebrated all over the world on 27th of October. This commemorative day was chosen by UNESCO in 2005 to raise awareness of the significance and preservation risks of recorded sound and audiovisual documents. 

  • This year’s theme is “Engage the Past Through Sound and Images”.
