Postal Department Releases Special Cover to Mark 55 Years of Brahmins’ Coffee Bar
The Postal department released a postal cover to mark the 55 years of the famed Brahmins’ Coffee Bar. One of the city’s best known joints for south Indian snacks, Brahmins’ Coffee Bar is especially famous for its chutney, besides their iconic coffee.

Shiv Sena-led Maharashtra govt launched ‘Shiv Bhojan’ scheme
Shiv Sena-led Maharashtra government, launched its much-awaited ‘ Shiv Bhojan’ scheme, which is aimed at providing a meal to the poor for just Rs 10, on the occasion of the 71st Republic Day.

  • Under the scheme, which was launched on a pilot basis, thalis or lunch plates would be available to the people at designated centres/ canteens during a stipulated time in all the districts.

11th edition of DefExpo 2020 to be held in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh from February 5-9 2020
Bengaluru-based defence aerospace major Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL), which has taken the lead role in organising the 11th biennial edition of DefExpo-2020, is planning to showcase its prowess in defence and aerospace. DefExpo-2020 is being held in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh, from February 5-9 and HAL is the lead co-ordinator along with Ministry of Defence (MoD) in organising the event.

26 new Indian English words featured in 10th Oxford dictionary;Aadhaar, hartal among them
The latest edition of the Oxford Advanced Learner’s Dictionary features 26 new Indian English words, including Aadhaar, chawl, dabba, hartal and shaadi.

  • The 10th edition of the dictionary, which was launched recently, has 384 Indian English words and incorporates over 1,000 new words such as chatbot, fake news and microplastic

France to be the guest of honour at 2022 New Delhi World Book Fair
France will be the guest of honour at the New Delhi World Book Fair announced France Ambassador to India, Emmanuel Lenain as part of a reciprocal invitation as New Delhi is the guest of honour this year at Livre Paris.

  • In a special ceremony at Jaipur Book Mark, the Ambassador also conferred the 2020 Romain Rolland Book Prize along with Leila Slimani, novelist and President Emmanuel Macron’s Envoy for Francophone Affairs.
  • Awarded annually to the best translation of a French title into any Indian language (including English), the prize this year went to the first three albums of the Asterix series, Asterix and the Golden Sickle, Asterix and the Goths, and Asterix the Gladiator, translated into Hindi by Dipa Chaudhuri and Puneet Gupta, and published by Om Books.


BANKING & FINANCE

RBI increased Investment Limits Under Voluntary Retention Route to Rs 1.5lakkh crore
Reserve Bank of India (RBI), in consultation with the Centre, has doubled the investment cap for foreign portfolio investors (FPI) under the ‘voluntary retention route’ (VRR) to 1.5-lakh crore. These limits will be available ‘on tap’ and allotted on ‘first come, first served’ basis.

  • The minimum retention period for these investments is three years.


BUSINESS & ECONOMY

India surpasses the US to become no. 2 smartphone market in the world: Counterpoint Research
According to the latest Counterpoint Research report, India has surpassed the US to become the second-largest smartphone market in the world, the country recorded 158 million shipments in 2019 with 7 per cent year-on-year growth, attributed to Chinese brands introducing smartphones with flagship-grade features in the mid-tier segment.

  • Xiaomi continued to lead the market for the second successive year with 28 per cent market share. Samsung secured the second spot with a 21 per cent share.

GeM signed MoU with UP for GOTT Project Management Unit
Government eMarketplace (GeM), under the Department of Commerce, Ministry of Commerce & Industry and Government of Uttar Pradesh, signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to set up a GeM Organizational Transformation Team (GOTT) Project Management Unit (PMU) in the State.

  • The MoU aims to expedite the harmonization of the procurement guidelines of the two entities and integration of systems, enabling seamless procuring experience.

Tennis player Joao Souza of Brazil banned for life due to match-fixing
Former top-100 tennis player  Joao Souza has been banned for life and fined $200,000 after being convicted of multiple match-fixing and other corruption offences.



APPOINTMENTS

Sunil Mehta got appointed as Chief Executive of Indian Banks’ Association
Sunil Mehta took over as Chief Executive Officer of the Indian Banks Association, IBA. He succeeds V G Kannan, who stepped down on December 31, 2019. Sunil Mehta was heading Punjab National Bank, PNB as an MD & CEO. While serving PNB, Mehta was also appointed as a chairman of IBA in 2018-19.



AWARDS

Padma Awards 2020 Announced on the occasion of 71st Republic Day.
The government has announced 141 Padma Awards for this year on the occasion of 71st Republic Day. The list comprises of 7 Padma Vibhushan, 16 Padma Bhusan and 118 Padma Shri awards. 34 awardees are women and 18 foreigners. 12 persons are awarded posthumously.

  • Former Union Ministers George Fernandes, Sushma Swaraj and Arun Jaitley will be awarded Padma Vibhushan posthumously. Pejavara math seer late Vishveshateertha Swamiji will be awarded Padma Vibhushan posthumously. Former Prime Minister of Mauritius Anerood Jugnauth, Hindustani classical vocalist Chhannulal Mishra and Boxer MC Mary Kom will also get Padma Vibhushan.
  • Former Chief Minister of Goa Manohar Parrikar and Legal luminary and educator NR Madhava Menon to be conferred Padma Bhushan posthumously. Eminent Writer Manoj Das, Shuttler PV Sindhu, industrialist Anand Mahindra will get Padma Bhushan.
  • Footballer Oinem Bembem Devi, Film Director Karan Johar, Actress Kangna Ranaut will get Padma Shri.
  • Several unsung heroes like Jagdish Lal Ahuja, Javed Ahmad Tak, Tulasi Gowda, Mohammed Sharif, Satyanayana Mundayoor, S Ramakrishna and Yogi Aeron have been selected for Padma Shri.  

Graphic designer Sneha pamneja wins Oxford Bookstore Book Cover Prize 2020 for ‘Tiffin’ at 13th Jaipur Literature Festival
Sneha Pamneja, a wellknown Graphic designer based in New Delhi, was awarded Oxford Bookstore Book Cover Prize 2020, for designing the cover of the book ‘Tiffin: Authentic Recipes Celebrating India’s Regional Cuisine’ at the13th edition of the Zee Jaipur Literature Festival (JLF) in Jaipur, Rajasthan.

Journalist & Hindu group chairman N Ram honoured with Kerala’s national media award
Eminent journalist and chairman of The Hindu Group of Publications N Ram has been selected for the Kerala Media Academy’s national media award for his outstanding contribution to journalism.The award carries a purse of Rs 1 lakh, a citation and a memento.

TN agri university Vice Chancellor N Kumar honoured 2019 Harit Ratna Award
N Kumar, Vice-Chancellor of Tamil Nadu Agricultural University, has been conferred ‘Harit Ratna Award 2019’ by the All India Agricultural Students Association for dissemination of Rs.30-crore entrepreneurship project in agri-business and for motivating students to the agriculture sector in the State.

  • The award was conferred at the 5th National Youth Convention at Indira Gandhi Krishi Vishwavidyalaya in Raipur recently.

Election Commission of India (ECI) award for The Hindu Tamil
Election Commission of India (ECI) awarded National Media Award for print to “The Hindu Tamil” as part of the poll panel’s national awards for voter awareness and education campaign in 2019 on the occasion of the 10th National Voters Day held at New Delhi.

INS Kavaratti was delivered to Indian Navy by the Defence PSU GRSE
Adding to Indian Navy’s firepower, Defence PSU Garden Reach Shibuilders and Engineers delivered anti-submarine warfare stealth corvette INS Kavaratti to the Navy

  • .’Kavaratti’ is the last of the four Anti-Submarine Warfare (ASW) stealth corvettes built by the GRSE for the Indian Navy under Project P28.


ENVIRONMENT

India completely phased out one of the most potent ozone depleting HCFC-141 b chemical
India has successfully achieved the complete phase out of Hydrochlorofluorocarbon (HCFC)-141 b, which is a chemical used by foam manufacturing enterprises and one of the most potent ozone depleting chemical after Chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) .(HCFC)-141 b is used mainly as a blowing agent in the production of rigid polyurethane (PU) foams.

  • India is one among the few countries globally and a pioneer in some cases in the use of technologies, which are non-Ozone Depleting and have a low Global Warming Potential (GWP).


OBITUARIES

Eminent artist and sculptor Sher Singh Kukkal passes away
Noted artist and sculptor Sher Singh Kukkal passed away. He was awarded Senior Fellowship in Visual Art Photography by Union Ministry Of Culture during 2008-09. He received a gold medal in painting from Queens College, Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh (UP) & Rajiv Gandhi Foundation award for his photography and painting.

JDS leader and former Karnataka Minister Kodman Amarnath Shetty passes away at 80
Former minister and senior JDS leader K Amarnath Shetty passed away in Mangaluru at a private hospital. He was 80.

  • Shetty who entered electoral politics in 1965, became the MLA three-times from Moodbidri constituency. He had contested seven times in the assembly elections.

Assamese linguist Golok Chandra Goswami passed away 
Eminent Assamese linguist and academician Golok Chandra Goswami due to old age ailments at a private hospital. He was 96.Goswami, had retired from the Gauhati University in 1985 as the head of the Assamese department.

  • He was honoured with the Asam Sahitya Sabha’s ‘Sahityacharya’ title, ‘Bhashacharya’ title by Asom Bhasha Bikash Samiti and ‘Anundoram Borooah Award’ by the Anundoram Barooah Institute of Language, Art and Culture.

International Customs Day – 26 January
The International Customs Day (ICD) observed annually on 26 January to recognizes the role of custom officials and agencies in maintaining border security, with the slogan “Customs fostering Sustainability for People, Prosperity and the Planet”.

 International Day of Commemoration – 27 January
International Holocaust Remembrance Day is an international memorial day on 27 January commemorating the tragedy of the Holocaust that occurred during the Second World War. It commemorates the genocide that resulted in the deaths of 6 million Jews and 11 million others, by the Nazi regime and its collaborators.

  • The theme for Holocaust education and remembrance in 2020, “75 years after Auschwitz – Holocaust Education and Remembrance for Global Justice”.
