PM Narendra Modi opens Asia’s longest tunnel

Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the 10.89 km long Chenani-Nashri all-weather road tunnel on the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway.

  • The two-lane Chenani-Nashri tunnel is Asia’s longest bi-directional highway tunnel, which will cut the distance between Jammu and Srinagar to around 250 km from the current 350 km.

President Mukherjee inaugurated NSE, DTIs and PMKK in Jharkhand

President Pranab Mukherjee visited Deogarh, Jharkhand where he inaugurated the National Skill Exhibition (NSE), Driver Training Institutes (DTIs) and Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Kendra (PMKK).

  • The President also laid the foundation stone for building two new DTIs at Deogarh and Ranchi.

Haryana government to provide Rs 21,000 to families for third girl child

Haryana government would provide one-time grant of Rs 21,000 to all those families whose third girl child was born after August 24, 2015, under the ‘Aapki Beti, Hamari Beti’ scheme.

  • Under the scheme, the eligible families would receive the amount irrespective of their caste, creed, religion, income and number of sons.
  • The scheme is aimed to combat the problem of declining child sex ratio and promote girls’ education in the state.

AP Chief Minister bags US India Biz Council award

Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu has been selected for another prestigious award. The US India Business Council has selected the CM for award of ‘Transformative Chief Minister’ and Naidu  would be receiving coveted award at second annual West Coast summit which to be held in California on May 8.

15th Mumbai International Film Festival on in Imphal

The nine-day 15th Mumbai International Film Festival is presently on at the Manipur State Film Development Society (MSFDS) in Imphal.

  • The festival, which began on March 27, has been organised by the Films Division (FD), Ministry of Information and Broadcasting.

P.V. Sindhu beats Carolina Marin to win India Open title

Olympic silver medallist P.V. Sindhu beat Rio Olympic gold medallist Carolina Marin to win the India Open Superseries title.

  • The win gave Sindhu her first India Open title and second Superseries title after the China Open last year.

Harmanpreet Kaur named Aus T20 team’s Player of the Year

India’s women’s T20I team captain Harmanpreet Kaur has been named Player of the Year by Australia’s Women’s Big Bash League team Sydney Thunder.

Harmanpreet earlier had become the first Indian cricketer to play in Australia’s Big Bash League, when she was picked by the team last year.

Kuldeep Yadav first men’s Chinaman bowler to play for India

Leg spinner Kuldeep Yadav, who debuted in the Dharamsala Test against Australia, has become the first-ever men’s Chinaman bowler to represent India. Chinaman bowling is left-arm unorthodox spin, where the bowler spins the ball into a right-handed batsman.

Kenyan, Joyciline Jepkosgei of Kenya broke three world records in winning the Prague Half Marathon.

  • She set a new half marathon world record — as well as registering the quickest times for the 10-kilometre and 15-kilometre marks — in just her fifth half marathon.

US Astronaut Peggy Whitson Breaks Sunita Williams’ Record For Most Spacewalks By A Woman

American astronaut Peggy Whitson made history when she floated outside the International Space Station, breaking the record for the most spacewalks by a woman.

  • Ms Whitson, 57, made her eighth career spacewalk, surpassing the record of seven previously held by American Sunita Williams.

U-shaped building design said to be world’s longest unveiled

The design plans for the U-shaped skyscraper ‘The Big Bend’ in New York, hailed as the world’s longest building, have been revealed. The 4,000-foot long building will feature an elevator system that can travel in curves, horizontally and in loops

Morocco launches final stage of world largest solar plant

Morocco’s King Mohammed VI launched in the fourth and final stage of Noor Ouarzazate, the world’s largest solar plant.

  • The Noor Ouarzazate IV power station in the southern province of Ouarzazate, spanned over an area of 137 hectares (1.37 square km), will be set up with over $75 million with photovoltaic (PV) technology
