Nirmala Sitharaman in Russia to attend Moscow Conference

Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman is in Russia to attend the 7th Moscow Conference on International Security. This is her first visit to Russia in her capacity as the Defence Minister.

Mumbai becomes first Indian city with 8 women police station in-charge

Mumbai, also known as the financial capital of India, has added another feather to its cap, becoming the first city of the country to have as many as eight women police station in-charges.



INTERNATIONAL NEWS

India to be partner country for Ambiente 2019

India will be the partner country for International Frankfurt Trade Fair, Ambiente 2019 to be held during February 8-12, 2019 in Germany. India will take over the partner country globe from the Netherlands.



BANKING & FINANCE

Jio Payments Bank begins operations

Jio Payments Bank Limited has commenced operations as a payments bank with effect from April 3, 2018. Reliance Industries Ltd was one of the 11 applicants which were issued in-principle approval for setting up a payments bank in August 2015.

  • Telecom major Bharti Airtel was the first to begin payment bank services in November 2016.
  • Paytm Payments Bank and Aditya Birla Idea Payments Bank have also started operations.
  • While, the Department of Posts, which also got a license for a payment bank is yet to start its services formally, who is running services on pilot basis currently.

RBI bars Axis Bank from importing bullion for FY19

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has dropped Axis Bank, which has been one of the largest importers of bullion, from the list of lenders allowed to ship in gold and silver for the current fiscal year.

  • Two other small banks Karur Vyasa and South Indian Bank, were also dropped from the RBI list.

SoftBank signs $930 mn deal to set up solar venture in India

SoftBank has signed a $930-million deal with China’s energy conglomerate Golden Concord (GCL) to produce and sell solar equipment in India. The project will have a 4 gigawatt-capacity and will produce solar ingots, silicon wafers, batteries, and components.
