Centre to set up, strengthen AHTUs, WHDs across country

The central government has announced to set up and strengthen Anti-Human-Trafficking-Units (AHTUs) and Women Help Desks (WHDs) across the country.

  • Union Minister Smriti Irani said that the Nirbhaya Fund will help set-up WHDs in all police stations and AHTUs in all districts across the nation.

Coal India advances target for one billion tonnes production by two years to 2024

Coal India has decided to advance its target year for achieving an annual production capacity of one billion tonnes by two years — 2024.

  • The company was earlier planning to achieve the target by 2019-20. However, lack of adequate demand and a plethora of issues with respect to raising production levels had forced the company to push back the deadline to 2025-26.

AYUSH Minister inaugurates National Research Institute of Unani Medicine for Skin Disorders

Union Minister of State for AYUSH Shripad Yesso Naik inaugurated the National Research Institute of Unani Medicine for Skin Disorders (NRIUMSD) in Hyderabad, Telangana.

  • The institute has been upgraded from Central Research Institute of Unani Medicine (CRIUM).

Singapore-based e-commerce platform Qoo10 acquires ShopClues in all-stock deal

Online marketplace ShopClues is being acquired by Singapore-based e-commerce platform Qoo10 in an all-stock deal bringing to an end a prolonged hunt by the Indian e-tailer for a buyer.

  • The transaction is learnt to have valued ShopClues at $70-100 million.

India Women claim Emerging Asia Cup 2019 title

The 2019 Emerging Teams Asia Cup was played between India, Sri Lanka, Pakistan and Bangladesh in Sri Lanka. India made it to the final with wins against the hosts by 32 runs and an emphatic victory against Pakistan by 7 wickets. In the final, India claimed the title after beating hosts Sri Lanka by 14 runs under the Duckworth/Lewis method in Colombo.



APPOINTMENTS

Satya Pal Malik sworn in as Goa Governor

Former Jammu and Kashmir Governor Satya Pal Malik has been sworn in as the Governor of Goa. The previous Governor Mridula Sinha’s term had ended this year.

  • Malik was the Governor of the erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir when it was bifurcated into two Union Territories — Jammu and Kashmir with a legislature, and Ladakh without a legislature.

28th Vyas Samman conferred on Leeladhar Jagoori

The 28th Vyas Samman for the year 2018 was conferred on well known Hindi writer Leeladhar Jagoori. Mr Jagoori has been chosen for the prestigious award for his poetry collection- Jitne Log Utne Prem.

Rajinikanth to be honoured with special Icon of Golden Jubilee award at IFFI

The 50th International Film Festival of India (IFFI) will honour superstar Rajinikanth with a special Icon of Golden Jubilee award, Information and Broadcasting Minister Prakash Javadekar announced.

  • The festival will be held in Goa from November 20 to 28 with close to 250 films from various countries scheduled to be screened at the event.

Neeraj sharma wins ‘Early career researcher of the year 2019’ award

Indian-origin researcher Neeraj Sharma has been given the ‘Early Career Researcher of the Year award’ by the Australian government. This award is given for developing next-generation battery systems such as a sodium-ion battery that will leave a minimal environmental impact. He is a professor at the University of South Wales (UNSW)’s School of Chemistry.



OBITUARIES

Industrialist and son of Modinagar’s founder, K K Modi passes away

The scion of one of the oldest business families in the country – the Modi family – and the eldest son of late Rai Bahadur Gujarmal Modi (founder of the city of Modinagar), Krishan Kumar Modi has passed away. He was 79.

  • K K Modi served as the chairman of Modi Enterprises, which includes companies like Godfrey Phillips, Indofil Industries and Modicare.
  • Modi was also a former chairman of FICCI.
