Gobardhan’ scheme launched from Haryana

Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar launched the ‘Gobardhan (Galvanizing Organic Bio Agro Resources Dhan) Scheme’ at a national-level event in Karnal in presence of Union Drinking Water and Sanitation Minister Uma Bharti.

  • The ‘GOBARDHAN’ scheme has been conceptualize with an aim to convert waste into bio energy, gas and compost which would not only benefit the people but also maintain cleanliness in the villages.

All 5,97,464 villages electrified, says power ministry

The power ministry has reported that all inhabited villages in the country have been electrified. When the Modi government took over, there were 18,452 unelectrified villages in the country but data shared by the Centre on Sunday showed that all of India’s 5,97,464 villages have been now electrified.

India projected to be 2nd fastest growing nation for passenger traffic: ACI

India has been projected to be the second fastest growing country in the world for passenger traffic by the Airports Council International (ACI) in its traffic forecasts between 2017-40.

  • The AIC, a global trade body representing airports across the globe, has put Vietnam at the top position with a 8.5 per cent growth rate, followed by India at 7.5 per cent and Iran at 7.3 per cent. In its forecasts, the AIC said by 2022, passenger traffic in emerging economies like India would surpass advanced economies.

Swachh Bharat Summer Internship to commence from May 1, 2018

Ministry of Drinking Water and Sanitation (MDWS) in association with Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD) and Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports (MYAS) has launched the Swachh Bharat Summer Internship.

  •  The internship period commences from tomorrow, May 1, 2018 and ends on July 31, 2018. The programme aims to engage millions of youngsters across the country, to encourage them to contribute to the Swachh Bharat Mission in the spirit of a true janandolan.
  • Under the internship, all interns who complete at least 100 hours of sanitation related work in villages would be given a Swachh Bharat certificate. Those who complete the internship with additional, specified outputs would also gain 2 curriculum credits specially allowed by UGC.

Maharashtra signs MoU with British Council

The Maharashtra government signed an MoU with the British Council to strengthen educational and cultural cooperation.

  • With this MoU, the British Council hopes to expand its existing work in the state, where in recent times, it has trained more than 100,000 teachers benefitting around five million learners.

Sikkim CM Pawan Kumar Chamling becomes longest-serving Chief Minister in India

On April 29, 2018, Sikkim CM and Sikkim Democratic Front (SDF) founder Pawan Kumar Chamling surpassed record for former West Chief Minister Jyoti Basu to become the longest serving CM of any Indian state.

  • Basu ruled Bengal for 23 years from June 21, 1977 to November 6, 2000, Chamling has been CM since December 12, 1994 and completed his 24th year in office on Sunday.

Indian, Malaysian armies to hold joint exercise Harimau Shakti

Indian Army and Malaysian Army are set to hold a joint training exercise – Harimau Shakti – on April 30. The exercise, which will take place in dense forests of Sengai Perdik, Hulu Langat district of Malaysia from April 30 to May 13, is aimed at sharing the expertise of both the contingents in conducting counterinsurgency operations in jungle terrain.

T-Mobile, Sprint ink $26 Billion Deal, agree to merge

US wireless carriers T-Mobile US Inc. and Sprint Corp. have finally inked about a $26 billion deal after years of negotiations. The agreement would leave just three major wireless carriers in the US. The combined company would take on the name T-Mobile, leaving just it, Verizon and AT&T. The combined company would be called T-Mobile.

Argentina’s central bank hiked interest rates to 30.25%

Argentina’s central bank (Central Bank of Argentina) has raised interest rates by 300 bps to fight inflationary pressures. The already high benchmark interest rates in the country has been raised from 27.25 per cent to 30.25 per cent in a bid to prop up its ailing currency from sliding further against the US dollar.

HDFC Bank launches IRA 2.0 in Bengaluru

Almost one and a half years after HDFC bank launched IRA (Intelligent Robotic Assistant) humanoid in its Mumbai branch, the bank on Thursday launched its second version at its Kormanagala branch in Bangalore.

  • IRA 2.0 is an interactive humanoid that has been trained to answer questions frequently asked by customers, and assist the customers to the correct counter as per their requirements. IRA interacts with customers with a voice-based technology, a significant change from the previous version which was mainly touch screen or text-based.

Pliskova wins Stuttgart Open

The Czech Republic’s Karolina Pliskova clinched the Stuttgart Open title after defeating the US wildcard Coco Vandeweghe. This was Pliskova’s first title of 2018 and the tenth of her career.

Prakash Apte appointed part-time Chairman of Kotak Mahindra Bank

Kotak Mahindra Bank on Monday announced the appointment of Prakash Apte as part-time chairman of the Bank for a period up to December 31, 2020, subject to regulatory approvals.  The announcement follows the retirement of incumbent part-time chairman Dr. Shankar Acharya.
