Amit Shah to head panel constituted to tackle mob violence and lynching

Union Home minister Amit Shah will head the panel constituted to combat incidents of mob violence and lynching across the country. The government had formed a Group of Ministers (GoM) last year to deliberate on incidents of lynching and make recommendations. When constituted, the panel was headed by then Home minister Rajnath Singh.

New mobile app launched to assist farmers

The Ministries of Earth Sciences and Agriculture have launched a mobile application ‘Meghdoot’ that will provide location, and crop and livestock-specific weather-based agro advisories to farmers in local languages.

  • To begin with, the service would be available for 150 districts in different parts of the country.
  • It has been developed by experts from the India Meteorological Department and Indian Institute of Tropical meteorology and the Indian Council of Agricultural Research.

Govt aims to enrol 150 million workers under PM pension scheme

The Union government will enrol around 150 million workers over the next three years under its flagship pension scheme Pradhan Mantri Shram Yogi Maan-dhan (PM-SYM), bringing more informal sector workers under the social security net.

India Ranked as 46th Highest Risk Country in Water Stress Index 2019

India has been ranked as the 46th highest risk country in the world in the Water Stress Index 2019, formulated by London-based risk analytics firm Verisk Maplecroft.

  • As per the index, 11 of 20 largest Indian cities face an ‘extreme risk’ of water stress while 7 of them are in the ‘high risk’ category.
  • Chennai is the “tip of the iceberg” for India’s water-stressed cities.

Maharashtra to get world’s first ultra-fast Hyperloop project

Maharashtra has granted infrastructure project status for a $10 billion plan to establish the world’s first ultra-fast hyperloop project. The projects aims to link Mumbai with the neighboring city of Pune.

  • Hyperloops use magnets to levitate pods inside an airless tube, creating conditions in which the pods can shuttle people and freight at speeds of up to 1,200 km per hour.

Tamil Nadu to get Silk Samagra for development of silk industry

Tamil Nadu, which has been ranked among the leading silk producing States in the country, will receive about Rs 6.22 crore under the Silk Samagra — an Integrated Scheme for Development of Silk Industry (ISDSI) implemented by the Union government through the Central Silk Board (CSB) at an outlay of RS 2,161.68 crore for three years from 2017-18 for the overall development of silk in the country.

First time ever! India to conduct its biggest tuberculosis preventive trial with two new vaccines

The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) has launched India’s first large-scale trial for two new TB vaccines – IMMUVAC and VPM1002. This is the first time a large preventive TB vaccine trial involving more than 12,000 healthy household contacts of newly diagnosed TB patients from across six states of India are set to be enrolled.

RBI allows domestic banks to sell NPAs abroad as one-time settlement

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) allowed domestic banks to directly sell their bad loans in manufacturing and infrastructure sectors to investors abroad as part of one-time settlement (OTS) exercises. The move will allow overseas investors to take direct loan exposure to Indian corporates.

Edelweiss Tokio Life ties up with MobiKwik to offer insurance solutions

Edelweiss Tokio Life Insurance, a private life insurer, has tied up with MobiKwik, a leading fintech platform, to offer mobile-based group insurance solutions for the latter’s customers.

Siddhartha Mohanty takes over as MD, CEO of LIC HFL

LIC Housing Finance (LIC HFL) announced that Siddhartha Mohanty has assumed charge as Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of the NBFC.

  • Prior to taking over as MD and CEO of LIC HFL, Mohanty was the company’s COO.

Veteran Telugu actor Devadas Kanakala passes away at 75

Veteran Telugu actor Devadas Kanakala, who helped many budding actors hone their skills through his film institute, has passed away. He was 75.
