Cabinet nod to India joining world intellectual property treaties

The Cabinet approved India’s accession to the World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO) Copyright Treaty, and WIPO Performers and Phonograms Treaty (WPPT) extending copyright coverage to the internet and digital spheres.

  • The treaties would spur business growth and contribute to the development of a vibrant creative economy and cultural landscape.

Cabinet nod for transfer of SSB land to Arunachal

The Union Cabinet approved the transfer of a 5.99 acre Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) plot in Tawang to the Arunachal Pradesh government for constructing a multipurpose ground.

  • The state government had identified land measuring 5.99 acres within the campus of SSB — a central paramilitary force mandated to guard 1,751 km India-Nepal and 699 km India-Bhutan borders — at Tawang for the multipurpose ground with parking facility over 4,73 acres and a ring road (1.26 acres).

Rehabilitation of migrants extended up to March 2020: Cabinet

The Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, gave its nod for the continuation, up to 2020, of eight schemes of the Home Ministry for relief and rehabilitation of migrants under the umbrella scheme “Relief and Rehabilitation of Migrants and Repatriates”.

NITI Aayog to organise India’s First Global Mobility Summit

Steeply falling technology costs and business – model innovation are driving the world’s transition to renewable energy and electric vehicles. Against this background, NITI Aayog, in collaboration with various ministries and industry partners, is organising ‘MOVE: Global Mobility Summit’ in New Delhi on 7th and 8th September, 2018. This Summit will help drive Government’s goals for vehicle electrification, renewable energy integration and job growth and also speed up India’s transition to a clean energy economy.

India to set up disaster database before 2020: Rijiju

Highlighting the need to systemise disaster data by setting up a database on a sustainable basis, Union Minister of State for Home Kiren Rijiju announced that it will be India’s endeavour to set up disaster database expeditiously well before the target date of 2020.

British Council, Bengal to sign MoU to promote exchanges

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee announced that the British Council and the state government will sign an MoU to promote cultural, educational and skill development exchanges between Britain and Bengal.

  • Among the salient features under the MoU are celebration of Durga Puja in Britain during Thames Festival, hosting of a River Festival in Kolkata similar to the Thames Festival in Britain, exchanging visitors between Britain and Bengal for cultural exchanges, collaboration on skill development, communication in English and overall enhancement of employability of youth.

Punjab CM orders mandatory dope test of all govt. employees

Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh has ordered a mandatory dope test of all government employees, including police personnel, from the time of their recruitment through every stage of their service.

  • The dope test would also be made a mandatory part of the annual medical examination of all civilian and police employees of the Punjab government, wherever prescribed.

‘Connect Delhi’ initiative to integrate city’s public transport system

The Delhi government launched the “Connect Delhi” initiative in a bid to make commuting easy for the residents of national capital.

  • The initiative will carry out a holistic planning exercise covering all public transport to ensure all areas of Delhi are connected.
  • The “route rationalisation and last mile connectivity” initiative will bring together multiple stakeholders of the government like the transport department, Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC), Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC), and Delhi Integrated Multi-Modal Transit System (DIMTS).

Agartala airport renamed after Tripura’s last king

The Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, renamed the Agartala airport after Tripura’s last ruler Maharaja Bir Bikram Kishore Manikya.

  • The decision comes in the wake of a long-pending demand of the people of Tripura as well as the state government to rename the airport after Bir Bikram Kishore Manikya as a tribute to the last ruler of the princely (1923-1947).

Bengaluru to get India’s 1st E-Waste Plant

Union minister of chemicals and Fertilisers Ananth Kumar announced that the country’s first e-waste recycling unit will come up in Bengaluru, Karnataka. The unit, to be set up by the ministry, is likely to be ready in four months, and is in keeping with the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan drive.

  • Bengaluru ranked third after Mumbai and Delhi and generated nearly 92,000 tonnes of e-waste annually.

Behdienkhlam Festival concludes in Meghalaya

The Behdienkhlam Festival of the Raij Tuber, one of the most colourful and the biggest festivals in the Jaintia Hills region concluded amidst thousands of spectators from across the state and outside.

  • Being the biggest of its kind, the Tuber Behdienkhlam has under it over 50-60 villages. The celebration was held at the sacred place called the ‘Bear’ situated in the heart of Tuber village which is about 25 kilometers from Jowai.

UNESCO to set up ‘gaming digital learning hub’ in AP

United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) entered in an agreement with Andhra Pradesh Government to set up a ‘Design University’ for gaming in Visakhapatnam.

  • The agreement was signed between UNESCO and Andhra Pradesh Economic Development Board (APEDB) for establishing a ‘Gaming Digital Learning Hub’.
  • The hub will consist of incubation centre, global research centre, global certification bureau in digital education, gaming teacher training academy, gaming-digital skill development academy.

Half the people in India want more ‘mobile-free’ time: Survey

Despite the fact that technology can today help people to work from anywhere, nearly half the people in India want more “mobile-free” time to devote to their friends and family, showed results of a survey.

  • Nearly one third of the respondents in India reported spending more time at work in the last two years with 38 per cent of them attributing technology as the cause, showed the findings of the “Live Life” survey by American Express and research firm Morning Consult.
  • The ‘Live Life’ survey highlights the shift from work life balance to work life integration.


BANKING & FINANCE

Bank of China to operate in India, RBI issues license

The Reserve Bank of India has issued licence to Bank of China to operate in India. According to reports, the decision was based on the commitment made by Prime Minister Narendra Modi to the Chinese leadership. Following this, the 106-year-old Bank of China will open a branch in India.

Recapitalisation scheme for Regional Rural Banks extended

The Union Cabinet extended the recapitalisation scheme for “Regional Rural Banks” (RRBs) for the next three years. This will enable the RRBs to maintain the minimum prescribed capital to risk weighted assets ratio (CRAR) of 9%.

  • Currently, there are 56 RRBs in the country. On provisional basis, as on March 31, 2017, the total credit given by RRBs is Rs 228,599 crore.
  • The scheme was started in FY2010-11 and has been extended twice in the year 2012-13 and 2015-16. The last extension was up to March 31, 2017.

Yes Bank receives SEBI’s approval to launch mutual fund

Private sector lender Yes Bank has received the final regulatory approval from the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) to commence its mutual fund business.



ECONOMY

Economy poised to grow above 8% from next year: NITI Aayog VC

According to NITI Aayog Vice Chairman Rajiv Kumar, the Indian economy is “on the cusp of a major sustained and ongoing recovery” and poised to grow above 8% from the next year.

  • He also insisted that the weakening of the rupee should not be a cause of worry as it is still “overvalued” in terms of the Real Effective Exchange Rate (REER).


APPOINTMENTS

Guterres appoints Uruguayan to head UN military observers in India, Pakistan

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres announced the appointment of Major General Jose Eladio Alcain of Uruguay as head of mission and chief military observer for the UN Military Observer Group in India and Pakistan (UNMOGIP).

  • Alcain will succeed Major General Per Gustaf Lodin of Sweden, who will complete his two-year assignment in July 2018.
