11th DefExpo 2020 to be held in Lucknow
11th edition of DefExpo 2020 which will be held from 5th to 9th February at Lucknow in Uttar Pradesh. The theme of the DefExpo 2020 is ‘India: The Emerging Defence Manufacturing Hub’.

  • The aim is to bring the leading technologies in the defence sector under one roof and provide a myriad of opportunities for the government, private manufacturers and startups.

Indian Navy conducts 5-day coastal security exercise, ‘Matla Abhiyaan’ in Kolkata, West Bengal
The Indian Navy carried out a five-day coastal security exercise, ‘Matla Abhiyaan’, with personnel of two naval boats, holding interactions with all stakeholders along the riverine border with Bangladesh.

  • During the exercise, the two boats undertook patrol in the Sunderban delta, and along the Indo-Bangladesh protocol route.

3-day Narmada Mahotsav was celebrated on Madhya Pradesh (MP)
In Madhya Pradesh, three-day Narmada Mahotsav was celebrated in the picturesque plains of Amarkantak on the occasion of Narmada Jayanti.

  • Local tribal art and culture will be duly demonstrated during Amarkantak Narmada Mahotsav-2020.

India and Maldives inks 5 MoUs to establish Addu tourism Zone
India and Maldives signed 5 MoUs for establishing the Addu Tourism zone in five islands of Addu atoll at a cost of 2.49 million USD.

  • The tourism zone is expected to generate local employment and enhance eco-tourism opportunities in Addu.
  • A 6th MoU to set up a bottled water plant in Hoarafushi was also signed.


INTERNATIONAL NEWS

Maldives readmitted and becomes 54th member of Commonwealth family
Maldives was officially readmitted to the Commonwealth, more than three years after the Indian Ocean archipelago nation quit the organisation over criticism of its human rights record, taking the count of the bloc’s membership countries back to 54.

  • Maldives became the Commonwealth’s 54th member-state, marking the end of a process that began in December 2018, when the new president Ibrahim Mohamed Solih wrote to the secretary-general Patricia Scotland, expressing the country’s interest in re-joining.

Pakistan declares national emergency to battle locust swarms
Pakistan, which is facing its worst locust attack in decades, has declared national emergency to tackle the insects destroying crops on a large scale in Punjab province, country’s main region for agricultural production

  • The desert locusts — large herbivores that resemble grasshoppers — arrived in Pakistan from Iran in June and have already ravaged cotton, wheat, maize and other crops.

Fiscal deficit reached 132.4 % of budget estimate for 2019-2020 till December: CGA
The government data showed that the country’s fiscal deficit in the April-December period reached 132.4 percent of the Budget Estimate for the financial year 2019-20. The government had set a target of 3.3 percent of GDP (gross domestic product) as the fiscal deficit target for the current fiscal

  • In actual terms, the fiscal deficit or gap between expenditure and revenue was Rs 9,31,725 crore, the data released by the Controller General of Accounts (CGA) showed

NSO revises India’s GDP growth rate for 2018-19 to 6.1% from 6.8%
The government on Friday revised downwards the economic growth rate for 2018-19 to 6.1 percent from 6.8 percent estimated earlier, mainly due to deceleration in mining, manufacturing and farm sectors.

  • Real GDP or GDP at constant (2011-12) prices for the years 2018-19 and 2017-18 stand at Rs 139.81 lakh crore and Rs 131.75 lakh crore, respectively, showing growth of 6.1 percent during 2018-19 and 7.0 percent during 2017-18

NADA suspends Weightlifter Ramshad AR for 2 year & Wrestler Ravinder Kumar for 4 years
The National Anti-Doping Agency (NADA) banned Indian weightlifter Ramshad AR for a period of 2 years after he was found guilty of violating the anti-doping rule.

  • Indian wrestler Ravinder Kumar was banned for a 4-year period by NADA for failing the dope test

Padma Shri awardee Deepa Malik elected as President of Paralympic Committee of India
Decorated para-athlete and India’s lone woman Paralympic medallist Deepa Malik has been elected as president of Paralympic Committee of India

  • Kavender Chaudhury and Shashi Ranjan Prasad Singh were elected as vice presidents, while M. Mahadeva was made treasurer. Nale Nandkishor Baburao and Kantilal Parmar were elected as joint secretaries.

Pramod Agrawal became the Chairman of Coal India Limited
Pramod Agrawal assumed charge as the new Chairman and Managing Director of Coal India Ltd.

  • He took over after A K Jha retired as the CIL chairman on January 31.


AWARDS

Shaktikanta Das named best central banker in Asia Pacific
Reserve Bank of India (RBI) Governor Shaktikanta Das has been named the Central Banker of the Year, Asia-Pacific 2020 and Jorgovanka Tabakovi, National Bank of Serbia, was adjudged the winner as the Global Central Banker of the Year by the Banker magazine, a unit of Financial Times (FT).

  • The award is given to central bankers who have “best managed to stimulate growth and stabilise their economy.”


SCIENCE & TECHNOLOGY

NASA decommissioned its Spitzer Space Telescope after 16 years
NASA has decommissioned the Spitzer Space Telescope, one of its greatest observatories which has studied the universe by detecting cosmic infrared radiation for more than 16 years.

  • Since its launch in 2003 it discovered Saturn’s largest ring and discovered  planets beyond our Solar System.


OBITUARIES

Famous Punjabi writer Jaswant Singh passed away at 101
Renowned Punjabi novelist Jaswant Singh Kanwal passed away at his native village Dhudike in Moga district.He was 101.

  • Known as the ‘writer of movements’, Kanwal penned nearly 80 books and novels.
  • He received the Sahitya Akademi Award for his novel ‘Taushali Di Hanso’ in 1997

Author Mary Higgins Clark, known as ‘Queen of Suspense’, passed away at 92
Mary Higgins Clark, the tireless and long-reigning ‘Queen of Suspense’ whose tales of women beating the odds made her one of the world’s most popular writers passed away. She was 92.

World Wetlands Day
World Wetlands Day is celebrated internationally each year on 2 February. It marks the anniversary of the signing of the Convention on Wetlands of International Importance (Ramsar Convention) in Ramsar, Iran, on 2 February 1971

  • The international theme for World Wetlands Day 2020 is ‘Wetlands and Biodiversity’.

World Cancer Day
World Cancer Day, organized by the Union for International Cancer Control (UICC) and celebrated each year on 4 February, is an opportunity to rally the international community to end the injustice of preventable suffering from cancer.

  • This year’s theme, “I am, I will” acknowledges that everyone has the capacity to address the cancer burden.
