Govt approves Rs 11,092 crore for all states to deal with COVID-19 challenge
Union Home Minister Amit Shah approved release of Rs 11,092 crore to all states under the State Disaster Risk Management Fund (SDRMF) for setting up quarantine facilities and arranging other facilities for checking the spread of coronavirus.

  • This fund is allowed to be utilised for setting up quarantine facilities, sample collection and screening; setting up additional testing laboratories, cost of consumables; purchase of personal protection equipment for healthcare, municipal, police and fire authorities; purchase of thermal scanners, ventilators, air purifiers, and consumables for government hospitals.

3-day Vasanthotsavam festival begins in Tirumala without devotees
The annual three-day-long Vasanthotsavam festival of Lord Balaji began in Tirumala without devotees due to the coronavirus lockdown.

  • The celebrations are being held at ‘Kalyana Utsava Mantapam’ temple premises instead of regular ‘Vasanta Mantapam’.

V-Safe Tunnels in Telangana to Sanitize People in 20 Seconds
V Safe Tunnel, a disinfectant tunnel was installed at the office of Director General of Police by S3V Vascular Technologies Private Limited. DGP M. Mahendar Reddy inspected the first-of-its-kind tunnel to be installed in State.

  • The tunnel was made to sanitize people within 20 seconds from any possible bacteria and virus.
  • The disinfectant solvent is atomized into aerosol with a particle size between 1.5 microns to 20 microns, utilizing an aerosol process


BUSINESS & ECONOMY

Fitch sees global growth contracting by 1.9 pc in 2020
Fitch Ratings projected that the global economy will fall into a deep recession in 2020 due to the massive disruptions caused by the Covid-19 pandemic, with growth print contracting by 1.9 per cent, pulled down by larger contraction in the US and the Euro zone.

  • The ratings agency’s Chief Economist Brian Coulton pegged India’s growth at 2 per cent and China’s at under 2 per cent — making them the two large economies which will not slip into recession.


SPORTS

2021 World Games in Birmingham, Alabama postponed to 2022
The 2021 World Games have been pushed back by a year to avoid clashing with the Tokyo Olympics which were rescheduled due to the coronavirus pandemic.

  • The 10-day international sports event, which was to take place in Birmingham July 15-25, 2021, has been rescheduled for July 7-17, 2022.

PETA India Award Honours Odisha Chief Minister for Allocating Funds to Feeding Community Animals During the Lockdown
PETA India will present Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik with a Hero to Animals Award for his compassionate act of allocating Rs 54 lakhs from a relief fund to efforts to feed community animals in five municipal corporations and all 48 municipalities of Odisha during the COVID-19 lockdown.

  • Patnaik received a framed certificate and a letter of appreciation from PETA India.


OBITUARIES

American singer Bill Withers passes away 
Bill Withers, the legendary performer who defined 1970s soul with timeless hits like ‘Ain’t No Sunshine’ and ‘Lean on Me’ has died. He was 81 years old.

  • He quickly followed up that success with a quick run of hit singles that included “Use Me” and the gospel-soul smash “Lean On Me,” which won a belated Grammy Award as best R&B song in 1987.

Veteran actor Shirley Douglas passes away at 86
Shirley Douglas, veteran actor, activist, and mother of Kiefer Sutherland passed away due to pneumonia linked complications. She was 86.

  • The late Gemini Award winner had worked with acclaimed filmmakers such as Stanley Kubrick (‘Lolita’) and David Cronenberg (‘Dead Ringers’).

Veteran music composer MK Arjunan passes away
Veteran music composer MK Arjunan, popularly known as Arjunan Master, passed away at his home in Palluruthy, Kochi. He was 84.

  • With more than 700 songs under his belt, he was a much-celebrated composer in the Malayalam music industry.
  • He also won his first Kerala state award for the best composer in 2017 for Jayaraj’s ‘Bhayanakam’.

Libya’s former PM Jibril dies due to coronavirus
Libya’s former Prime Minister Mahmoud Jibril died from complications related to coronavirus. He was 73-year-old.

  • Jibril served as interim prime minister for almost a year during the civil war that toppled and later killed Moammar Gaddafi in 2011

IIT-Roorkee develops Prana-Vayu, a low-cost ventilator
Amid the growing demand for hospital ventilators due to the COVID-19 pandemic, IIT-Roorkee has developed a low-cost portable ventilator in association with AIIMS-Rishikesh, which can be manufactured for just ₹25,000.

  • Named ‘Prana-Vayu,’ the closed-loop ventilator can deliver the required amount of air to the patient, with an automated process controlling the pressure and flow rates

Union HRD Minister launches MHRD AICTE COVID-19 Student Helpline Portal developed by AICTE in New Delhi
In view of the outbreak of COVID19 and National lockdown since March 25th, some students have been facing difficulties due to closure of colleges and hostels. Hence in order to provide help and support to such students, AICTE (All India Council for Technical Education) has come out with a unique MHRD AICTE COVID-19 Student Helpline Portalcto address the issues.

  • The website with an URL https://helpline.aicte-india.org was launched by the Minister for Human Resource development Shri Ramesh Pokhriyal “Nishank”.

Goa govt launches ‘COVID-Locator’ app to track home quarantine people
The Goa Government on Sunday launched the ‘COVID-Locator’ app, a GPS based location tracker that will help the government in tracking those who have been home quarantined.

  • With the help of this app, suspected and asymptomatic carriers of the deadly virus would be tracked when they leave their quarantine zones.
  • This initiative was taken to contain the further spread of COVID-19 in the state.
