World’s first bamboo crash barrier installed on highway in Maharashtra
In yet another achievement towards self-reliance, India developed the world’s first bamboo-made crash barrier and installed it on the Vani-Warora Highway in Vidarbh, Maharashtra.

  • Crash barriers are installed on either side of a highway with an aim to prevent vehicles from falling out of the road network. It also keeps outside elements from entering into the highways.
  • These are typically made of steel due to the strength the metal gives to these key infrastructure. Replacing steel barriers with bamboo crash barriers would be a very innovative move by the Centre to bring down fatalities in road accidents.

Madhya Pradesh CM launches ‘Laadli Behna’ scheme for women
Shivraj Singh Chouhan, the chief minister of Madhya Pradesh, unveiled the “Laadli Behna” Yojana, under which qualified women will get 1,000 rupees every month in support.

  • On March 5, the chief minister’s 65th birthday, the procedure for accepting applications for the benefit programme started.
  • CM Chouhan, who announced the programme at a large celebration at Jamboree Maidan in Bhopal, asked women to use the money they received via the programme to improve their families. One crore women in the state are the target of the government’s efforts, for which the Union Budget 2023 has a provision of 8,000 crore.

31 Indian states have implemented ‘PM CARES for Children’ scheme: ILO-UNICEF report
An ILO-UNICEF report on Social Protection for Children said 31 Indian states have implemented the national ‘ PM CARES for Children ‘ scheme launched during the pandemic with 10,793 full orphans (children who have lost both parents) and 151,322 half-orphans (children who have lost one parent) due to the pandemic taking the benefit of the scheme.

  • 2.4 billion Children in this world need adequate social protection.
  • Nearly 1.77 billion children aged 0-18 years lack access to a child or family cash benefit, a fundamental pillar of a social protection system

Regional disparities:

  • One billion children live in multidimensional poverty without access to education, health, housing, nutrition, sanitation or water.

Gender disparity:

  • Children with disabilities or living in a household with a family member with a disability are more vulnerable to poverty.

Madhya Pradesh CM announces Mauganj tehsil as 53rd district of state
Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan made an announcement to make Mauganj tehsil a separate district.

  • Four tehsils which fall in the limits of Rewa district, Mauganj, Hanumana, Naigarhi and Dev Talab will be merged to form the new district Mauganj of the state.
  • On the occasion Chouhan transferred an ex-gratia amount of Rs 605 crore to 27,310 labour families of the state with a single click in their accounts under Mukhyamantri Jan-Kalyan (Sambal) Yojana 2.0. Besides, he performed bhoomi-pujan and inaugurated development works worth Rs 738.92 crore.

Mandaviya launches 100th Janaushadhi Kendra, NaMo Free Dialysis Centre in Bengaluru South
Union Minister Dr Mansukh Mandaviya launched ‘NaMo Free Dialysis Centre’ and 100th Janaushadhi Kendra in Bengaluru South.They were launched at the KSRTC Hospital at Jayanagar.

  • The dialysis centre, named after the Prime Minister, is meant to provide free hemodialysis treatment for the poor and marginalised sections, and the dialysis machines for the facility were procured under the MP Local Area Development Scheme (MPLADS) fund by Bengaluru South MP Tejasvi Surya, with corporate sponsors donating a few more machines to the hospital

India ranks 108th in V-Demographic index 2023
India has now been ranked at the 108th spot globally for electoral democracy, far behind nations like Tanzania, Bolivia, Mexico, Singapore, and even Nigeria, which comes in at a modest 91st spot by V-Dem Institute in its Electoral Democracy Report for 2023.

  • This ranking may come as a shock to many, but it is also far below nations like Tanzania, Bolivia, Mexico, Singapore, and even India.
  • India’s standing on the Liberal Democracy Index (LDI) is once more appallingly low, and it even has the sad distinction of falling from 100th place in 2022 to 108th this year.
  • According to the report “Defiance in the Face of Autocratization,” the current wave of autocratization affects almost every region of the world, but in the Asia-Pacific, democracy has suffered significantly, and nearly 3.5 billion people now live in what the report refers to as “electoral autocracies” in these regions. India is obviously listed among them in high regard.

  • Through this partnership, Max Life Insurance will offer a range of savings, protection, retirement, and group life insurance plans to more than 73 lakh customers of Ujjivan SFB.

India’s per capita income doubles since 2014-15: NSO
India’s per capita income in nominal terms doubled to Rs 1,72,000 since 2014-15 when the Narendra Modi-led NDA came to power but uneven income distribution remains a challenge.

  • As per the National Statistical Office (NSO), the annual per capita (net national income) at current prices is estimated at Rs 1,72,000 in 2022-23, up from Rs 86,647 in 2014-15, suggesting an increase of about 99 per cent.
  • In real terms (constant prices), the per capita income has increased by about 35 per cent from Rs 72,805 in 2014-15 to Rs 98,118 in 2022-23.
  • Average growth of India’s per-capita income in real term for the period from 2014 to 2019 was 5.6 per cent per annum.

Max Verstappen wins Bahrain Grand Prix 2023
Max Verstappen won the season-opening Bahrain Grand Prix from pole position, leading almost the entire race as he opened the defense of his back-to-back Formula One titles.

  • It was the first time he had won in Bahrain and also the first time he had triumphed in a Formula One opener.
  • Red Bull also clinched a dominant 1-2 with Sergio Perez finishing second while 41-year-old Fernando Alonso took a brilliant third place and claimed a 99th career podium on a stunning race debut for Aston Martin.

Mirabai Chanu wins BBC Indian Sportswoman of the Year for a second time
Tokyo Olympic Games silver medalist and weightlifter Saikhom Mirabai Chanu from Manipur has won the 2022 ‘BBC Indian Sportswoman of the Year Award’ (ISWOTY) after a public vote.

  • With this, the 28-year-old weightlifter has become the first athlete to win the prestigious award twice in a row after bagging it in 2021 as well.
  • Table tennis player Bhavina Patel won the ’BBC Para Sportswoman of the Year’ award, a category introduced this year.
  • Former captain of the Indian women’s hockey team Pritam Siwach was conferred with the ’BBC Lifetime Achievement Award’ for her contribution to Indian sports and for inspiring generations of players.
  • Boxer Nitu Ghanghas was chosen as the ’BBC Emerging Player of the Year’. She is a two-time youth world champion and Commonwealth Games medallist.
  • The women’s lawn bowls team of Lovely Choubey, Rupa Rani Tirkey, Pinki and Nayanmoni Saikia, which won gold at the 2022 Commonwealth Games, India’s first-ever medal in the sport was given the ’BBC Changemaker of the Year Award’.
