Union Minster Prahlad Singh Patel hosted 6th BRICS Culture Ministers Meeting
The Minister of State (I//C) for Culture and Tourism, Shri Prahlad Singh Patel hosted 6th BRICS Culture Ministers’ Meeting through video conference.

  • Discussion was held for advancement and expansion of cultural activities amongst BRICS countries under the theme Bonding and Harmonizing Cultural Synergy.
  • Minister of State for Culture addressed participants of the meeting and presented India’s perspective to strengthen the cultural cooperation within BRICS. He highlighted the importance of the role of culture for establishing vibrant international humanitarian dialogue.

New record being set up by planting 25 crore saplings during week-long Van Mahotsav in UP
The Uttar Pradesh government is all set to create a new record by planting 30 crore saplings in the state on the occasion of Van Mahotsav(July 1 and July 7) .

  • Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath held a programme to initiate plantation of 25 crore samplings in a single day. The state administration also issued guidelines to district officers to ensure that the plantation drive is conducted successfully.
  • The UP government has even launched a competition by the name of ‘Paodha lagao, Inam Pao’ (plant trees, win rewards).

UP Govt plans to establish Health ATMs to provide better health facilities
In Uttar Pradesh, the government is planning to establish Health ATMs to provide better health facilities to the people in state.

  • Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath while reviewing a high-level Covid19 meeting at Lucknow  instructed to find out possibilities in this direction so that poor and stranded people are benefitted.
  • The health ATMs are a part of the government’s ePHC (electronic Primary Health Centre) project that integrates telemedicine with free drug distribution. These Health ATM machines will be installed in villages, small towns and other places in cities.

CRPF signs MoU with C-DAC to train manpower of force in advanced technologies, undertake joint projects
The Central Reserve Police Force, CRPF has signed a MoU with Centre for Development of Advanced Computing C-DAC to train the manpower of the force in advanced technologies and undertake joint projects.

  • The MoU aims at augmenting the technical capabilities of CRPF by training its manpower in advanced areas like Internet of Things (IoT), Cyber security, Artificial Intelligence, High-Performance Computing and Big Data Analytics.
  • The agreement will also provide the expertise of C-DAC in the form of Technology Partner and Knowledge Partner in developing various ICT solutions of CRPF.


INTERNATIONAL NEWS

China certified malaria-free after 70-year fight, says WHO
China was certified as malaria-free by the World Health Organisation, following a 70-year effort to eradicate the mosquito-borne disease.

  • The country reported 30 million cases of the infectious disease annually in the 1940s but has now gone four consecutive years without an indigenous case.


BANKING & FINANCE

RBI issues instructions for appointment of MD/WTD in Urban Co-operative Banks
The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) on 25 June issued a notification harmonising the rules for appointment of urban co-operative banks’ (UCB) chiefs and whole-time directors (WTDs) with those of private banks.

  • The tenure of the managing director (MD)/ WTD shall not be for a period more than five years at a time subject to a minimum period of three years at the time of first appointment, unless terminated or removed earlier, and shall be eligible for re-appointment. Also, the post of the MD or WTD cannot be held by the same incumbent for more than 15 years, the RBI said.
  • Chiefs of public sector banks are typically appointed by the government for a term of three years or until the appointee reaches the age of 60, whichever occurs first. Private bank MD-CEOs are appointed by their respective boards, subject to approval by the RBI, and can hold the post till the age of 70.
  • The person shall not be below the age of 35 years and above the age of 70 years at any time during his/ her term in office. However, within the overall limit of 70 years, as part of their internal policy, individual bank’s Boards are free to prescribe a lower retirement age.

Government extends retirement age of LIC chairman to 62 years
The government has extended the superannuation age of IPO-bound LIC Chairman to up to 62 years by making amendment to the Life Insurance Corporation of India (Staff) Regulations, 1960.

  • The changes made in the rules will be called the Life Insurance Corporation of India (Staff) Amendment Rules, 2021, according to a government notification dated June 30, 2021.
  • It is to be noted that the retirement age for the top executives of the majority of PSUs is 60 years, barring a few exceptions, including the State Bank of India (SBI).

NABARD sanctions Rs 388 crore for drinking water, road projects in Odisha
NABARD has sanctioned an assistance of Rs 388 crore for Odisha under the Rural Infrastructure Development Fund (RIDF) for setting up four mega piped drinking water supply projects.

  • The sanctioned amount would also be used for construction or up-gradation of 20 village roads across 15 districts in the state, an official statement said.
  • The four mega projects will come up in Koraput district (covering Boipariguda block), Balasore district (covering Nilgiri block), and Malkangiri district (covering Malkangiri and Kalimela blocks).

Sun Pharma launches a special initiative ‘Sunkalp’ for the welfare of doctors 
Sun Pharmaceutical Industries launched a special initiative ‘Sunkalp’ for the welfare of doctors, their families and the community.

  • These initiatives will be rolled out in stages. These include mental health support for doctors and their families, professional webinars for doctors on mental health, COVID-19 drug donations (Phase 2), post-doctor education support (Phase 2), and COVID-19. He added that he lives in (Phase 2).
  • It also announced that the company has promised Rs 10 billion for these initiatives. This includes donating COVID-19 medicines to the entire community through local and state agencies.

WAKO India Kickboxing Federation gets government recognition
The Sports Ministry announced that it has decided to recognise the WAKO India Kickboxing Federation as a National Sports Federation (NSF), in a bid to promote and develop the sport in the country.

  • WAKO India Kickboxing Federation is affiliated to the World Association of Kickboxing Organizations (WAKO), the world body for kickboxing.
  • WAKO has been a provisionally recognised member of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) since November 30.

Germany Midfielder Toni Kroos announces retirement from International Football
Germany midfielder Toni Kroos has announced his retirement from international football after his team’s exit from the European Championship, the 31-year-old said.

  • The 2014 World Cup winner earned 106 caps for his country, contributing 17 goals and 19 assists.

Uttarakhand Chief Minister Tirath Singh Rawat resigns, Pushkar Singh Dhami to be next CM
Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Pushkar Singh Dhami took oath as the eleventh chief minister of Uttarakhand, a day after he was elected as the leader of the BJP’s legislature party in the hill state, thus paving the way for his elevation to the state’s top post.

  • At 45, Dhami, the lawmaker from the Khatima assembly constituency, is the youngest chief minister of Uttarakhand, which came into existence in November 2000 after being carved out of Uttar Pradesh.
  • Dhami, who had never held any ministerial position before being elevated as the chief minister, succeeds Garhwal MP Tirath Singh Rawat, who resigned recently .

Jim Whitehurst resigns as IBM president
Jim Whitehurst has announced he is stepping down as the president of IBM. Whitehurst’s resignation is being seen as one of the several management moves the IBM announced, according to news agency Bloomberg.

  • The 53-year-old’s exit led to shares of the technological giant falling 4.8 per cent to $139.83, the most in five months, Bloomberg reported.

Nashik Radio Station Wins Awards for Its ‘Education for All’ Program Amid Pandemic
Radio Vishwas, a Community Radio Station operating in Maharashtra’s Nashik district which has been providing free audio lessons to school students during the COVID-19 pandemic, has bagged two awards at the 8th edition of the National Community Radio Awards instituted by the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting.

  • The station bagged the first prize in the Sustainability Model Awards category and the second prize in the Thematic Awards category for its program `Education for All in the times of COVID-19′.
  • Run by the Vishwas Dhyan Prabodhini & Research Institute, the station broadcasts for 14 hours daily. Its program ‘Shikshan Sarvansathi’ (Education for all) that won the award was started in June 2020 to provide free education to students from std 3rd to 10th. The program features audio lectures in various languages including Hindi, English, Marathi and Sanskrit.


SCIENCE & TECHNOLOGY

ISRO gives nod to parliamentary panel to implement satellite TV classrooms
Indian Space Research Organisation, ISRO has given its nod to the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Education to provide technical assistance for satellite TV classrooms in the country to bridge the learning gap due to COVID-induced lockdown.

  • ISRO scientists appeared before the Parliamentary Standing Committee for Education and made a detailed presentation about the proposed satellite TV classroom for students.
  • ISRO scientists emphasized that the organization is ready to provide satellite rights to states to start satellite TV classrooms but asked if the States will be willing to use the technology.

Gujarati actor Arvind Rathod passes away
Gujarati actor Arvind Rathod passed away at his Ahmedabad residence due to age-related complications. He was 83.

  • Rathod is known for his portrayal as a villain in Gujarati movies. He was also active in theatre circles and had tried his hand in Bollywood films as well. He worked in blockbusters such as “Agneepath”, “Khuda Gawah”, among others.

A biography of Nathuram Godse, Mahatma Gandhi’s infamous assassin, situates the man and his most defining act in the larger context of modern Indian history and contemporary society and politics.

  • Nathuram Godse: The True Story of Gandhi’s Assassin” by Mumbai-based journalist Dhaval Kulkarni will be published by Pan Macmillan India in 2022.
