Maharashtra to set up science city named after Rajiv Gandhi in Pune
Maharashtra Cabinet has decided to set up a Science City in Pune. The complex will be known as ‘Bharat Ratna Rajiv Gandhi Science City’ in Pimpri- Chinchwad Municipal Corporation in Pune.

  • After the state government has announced the IT Awards in the name of Rajiv Gandhi and earlier, Assam Cabinet decided to rename Rajiv Gandhi National Park as Orang National Park, now the Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackrey has decided to set up Science City after Rajiv Gandhi’s name.

India hosted International Climate Summit 2021
India will host a key summit s part of the International Climate Summit (ICS) 2021, an initiative by the PHD Chamber of Commerce and Industry’s environment committee.

  • The global hybrid summit will build a dialogue for India’s transition to clean energy, according to the organisers of the event.
  • The ICS has partnered with Invest India for the event. The special focus of the summit will be on ‘Powering India’s Hydrogen Ecosystem’.
  • Policy makers, regulators, industry leaders, experts and scientists from across the globe are going to be a part of the event. Union ministers Bhupendra Yadav and Jitendra Singh, Niti Aayog member Dr V K Saraswat and Sturle Harald Pedersen, Chairman, Greenstat India, Norway are some of the eminent participants.

NMCG signs MoU with SAIARD for ‘Capacity Building on Integrated River Basin Management with a focus on Geospatial Technology in Riverine Ecosystem’
The National Mission for Clean Ganga (NMCG) and South Asian Institute for Advanced Research and Development (SAIARD) have signed an MoU to create and enhance capacity building on integrated river basin management, a statement said.

  • With the signing of this MoU, SIAIRD will also henceforth be considered as the regional capacity building centre for NMCG.
  • Both NMCG and SAIARD will work together to create and enhance capacity building on integrated river basin management, with a focus on geospatial technology in riverine ecosystems.


BANKING & FINANCE

Eight major banks join the account aggregator network
Eight major banks have joined the account aggregator network that will enable customers to easily access and share their financial data.

  • These lenders include State Bank of India, ICICI Bank, Axis Bank, IDFC First Bank, Kotak Mahindra Bank, HDFC Bank, IndusInd Bank, and Federal Bank.
  • Neo bank Fi has also joined the account aggregator network and is one of the first fintechs to join the ecosystem.

Govt introduces rules for calculating taxable interest on PF contributions beyond specified limits
Government has issued rules for calculating taxable interest on contribution to provident fund beyond Rs 2.5 lakh for cases where employer is contributing, and Rs 5 lakh where employer isn’t contributing.

  • Two separate accounts within the PF account will have to be maintained during 2021-22, and onwards, for segregating the taxable and non-taxable contributions made, the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT).
  • Taxable contribution account will be the aggregate of the contribution made by the person beyond the threshold limit and interest accrued on the contribution, minus any withdrawals made.
  • On the other hand, non-taxable contributions will be the aggregate of closing balance as of March 31, 2021, contributions made by the account holder that are not included in taxable contribution account and interest accured on the total sum, minus any withdrawals.

HDFC Bank becomes 1st lender to list $1-bn AT-1 bonds on IFSC
HDFC Bank became the first Indian lender to list its $1 billion foreign currency additional tier-I (AI-1) bonds, priced at 3.7%, on the International Financial Services Centre (IFSC) of the Gujarat.

  • Global Securities Market, the primary market platform of India INX, has received significant interest since it was established in 2018 and has over $55 billion medium term notes and over $28 billion of bond listings till date.

Nasscom CoE-IoT partners Taiwan-India AI Technology Innovation Research Centre
Nasscom Centre of Excellence for Internet of Things (CoE-IoT) said it has signed an intent of cooperation with Taiwan-India Artificial Intelligence Technology Innovation Research Centre, Taiwan’s largest university and incubator of startups under the National Chung Cheng University.

  • Aimed at incubation support, mentorship and market access, the collaboration between Nasscom CoE IoT and Taiwan-India Artificial Intelligence Technology Innovation Research Center will help Indian tech startups to source hardware components from Taiwan during their prototyping or production phases.

India bag 39 medals including 14 gold at ASBC Asian Youth & Junior Boxing Championships
Indian boxers dominated the recently held ASBC Asian Youth & Junior Boxing Championships, claiming a total of 39 medals, a new high for the country at the 2021 ASBC Asian Youth & Junior Boxing Championships with 39 medals, including 14 gold, in Dubai.

  • India earned 20 medals in the youth category, and 19 medals in the junior category, which was held earlier. India won 14 gold medals out of 39 total at the competition.
  • In the youth men’s events, where India clinched six gold medals, nine silver, and five bronze, Bishwamitra Chongtham led from the front in the 51kg category to help his country win the first yellow in the last seven years. Vishal Gupta also won a gold medal for India in the 80kg category. Meanwhile, Neha (54kg), Preeti Dahiya (60kg), Sneha Kumari (66kg), and Khushi (75kg) added four gold medals for India in the women’s youth category to form the tally of India in junior events
  • Earlier, India had won 19 medals in the junior events, including eight gold, five silver, and six bronze medals. Indian boxers Rohit Chamoli (Boys 48kg), Bharat Joon (Boys +80kg), Mahi Raghav (Girls 63kg), and Vishu Rathee (Girls 48kg), Tanu (Girls 52kg), Nikita Chand (Girls 60kg), Pranjal Yadav (Girls 75kg), and Kirti (Girls +80kg) all won gold medals for their country.

Vartika Shukla becomes first woman CMD of Engineers India Ltd
State-owned engineering consultancy firm Engineers India Ltd (EIL) announced Vartika Shukla has assumed charge as the first woman Chairperson & Managing Director of the company with effect from September 1,2021.

  • A graduate in Chemical Engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur, Shukla joined EIL in 1988 and has extensive consulting experience comprising design, engineering, and implementation of complexes in refining, gas processing, petrochemicals and fertilisers.

PPK Ramacharyulu appointed RS secretary general
Rajya Sabha Chairman M Venkaiah Naidu appointed Dr PPK Ramacharyulu, working as Secretary in the Rajya Sabha Secretariat since 2018, to the highest office till further orders.

  •  He succeeds Desh Deepak Verma, who demitted office as SG after serving for four years.
  •  PPK Ramacharyulu is the first insider to have risen from the ranks of the Secretariat as it’s ahead in about 70 years since the Rajya Sabha came into being in 1952.

Three Indian educational institutes have made it to the list of the best 400 universities across the world. Indian tally is led by the IISc Bangalore – a consistent first among Indian institutes.

  • Globally, the University of Oxford tops the ranking for the sixth consecutive year. It was followed by California Institute of Technology and Harvard University
  • A total of 71 universities made it to THE World University Rankings 2022, compared to 63 last year

Canada’s Burnaby city to observe Gauri Lankesh Day on September 5
Burnaby, a city in Canada, has declared September 5 as Gauri Lankesh Day, commemorating the slain activist’s life on her death anniversary.

  • The decision was taken during the Burnaby City Council meeting on August 30 and a proclamation, signed by city mayor Mike Hurley, was published on the official website subsequently.
  • Gauri Lankesh, a journalist-turned-activist, was shot dead outside her home in Rajarajeshwari Nagar, Bengaluru, by unidentified men on September 5, 2017. The 55-year-old was an open critic of the Hindutva politics in the state.
