NATIONAL NEWS

PM Modi releases postage stamp to mark beginning of centenary celebrations of Chauri Chaura incident
Prime Minister Narendra Modi released a postage stamp dedicated to mark the beginning of centenary celebrations of the Chauri Chaura incident in Uttar Pradesh, via video conferencing.
Chauri Chaura incident
A group of freedom fighters had set ablaze a police station at Chauri Chaura in Gorakhpur district of the then United Province (now Uttar Pradesh) on February 4, 1922, to protest against the high-handedness of the British regime.

  • The incident claimed the lives of 22 policemen and three freedom fighters. As many as 19 freedom fighters were given capital punishment for this one incident.

Kerala opens its first human milk bank
The State’s first human milk bank was inaugurated at the Ernakulam General Hospital by Health Minister K.K. Shylaja.

  • The facility will ensure breast milk for newborns who cannot be breastfed by their own mothers, who might be deceased, unwell or unable to produce sufficient milk.
  • The milk, which will be collected from lactating mothers at the hospital, can be stored for up to six months at the bank. 
  • The milk bank, called ‘Nectar of Life’ and worth ₹35 lakh, was set up by the Rotary Club of Cochin Global in collaboration with the State Health Department.

IIT-KGP inks MoU with NIUA to develop framework for inclusive city planning
IIT Kharagpur has inked an MoU with the National Institute of Urban Affairs (NIUA) to develop a framework for universal city planning inclusive for all sections of the society.

  • The framework will ensure that everyone, including people with disabilities and the elderly, gets access to transport, recreation, livelihood and information.

Ropeways and Alternate Mobility Solutions to be under Ministry of Road Transport and Highways
The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) will, from now on, also look after the development of ropeways and alternate mobility solutions.

  • The move is expected to give a boost to the sector, by setting up a regulatory regime, and facilitating research and new technology to come into this sector.
  • An amendment to the Government of India (Allocation of Business) Rules, 1961 has been notified to enable this step. The Ministry will have responsibility for development of ropeways and alternative mobility solutions technology, as well as construction, research and policy in this area.


INTERNATIONAL NEWS

Denmark to build world’s first energy island in the North Sea
Denmark has reached a landmark agreement to build what is claimed to be the ‘world’s first’ energy island in the North Sea.

  • The energy hub, owned by a public-private partnership, will be an artificial island 80 kilometres off Jutland peninsula in northern Europe.
  • The plant is predicted to cover the energy consumption of ten million households.
  • The energy hub will distribute green electricity from hundreds of wind turbines surrounding the island to consumers in North Sea countries.


BANKING & FINANCE

PayPal to shut domestic payment services within India from April 1
Paypal said it will stop offering domestic payment services within India from 1 April.

  • The US-based company will instead focus on enabling more international sales for Indian businesses.
  • The company noted that it had processed $1.4 billion worth of international sales for over 3.6 lakh merchants in India last year.

GRSE signs contract to deliver fast patrol vessel to Seychelles
Defence PSU Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers Ltd (GRSE) has signed a contract to deliver a fast patrol vessel (FPV) to Seychelles. 

  • The signing of the contract with Seychelles comes within a month of the shipyard concluding an agreement for one ocean-going passenger and cargo ferry vessel with Guyana. 
  • The Seychelles Coast Guard ship ”Zoroaster” will be a powerful, fuel-efficient platform designed to perform multipurpose operations, such as patrolling, anti-smuggling, anti-poaching, and search and rescue.

Centre signs pact with Zomato for home delivery of street food
Zomato said it has signed an agreement with the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA) to onboard 300 food street vendors on its platform.

  • The online restaurant guide and food ordering platform said it will onboard 300 street vendors across six cities – Bhopal, Raipur, Patna, Vadodara, Nagpur, and Ludhiana – in the first phase.
  • Considering the popularity of street food in these cities, there is an immense growth potential for these vendors in the online food delivery sphere.

SpearUAV, Paras Aerospace ink pact to unveil Ninox 40 system in India
SpearUAV, Israel-based developers and suppliers of unique Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) solutions for defence and Homeland Security (HLS) applications — signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Paras Aerospace, a subsidiary of Paras Defence and Space Technologies Limited, to introduce the unique encapsulated Ninox 40 system to the Indian market for use by military forces, paramilitary, internal security, and law enforcement agencies.

  • Ninox 40 is a micro-tactical, cost-effective drone system, featuring an encapsulated drone and control unit.
  • The Ninox 40 has a flight capacity of up to 40 minutes, extensive ISTAR capabilities, day and night camera for enhanced situational awareness, automatic tracking, and can be launched on the move even in harsh environmental conditions.


APPOINTMENTS

SN Subrahmanyan appointed as Chairman of National Safety Council
The Ministry of labour and employment has appointed Larsen & Toubro’s Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director SN Subrahmanyan as the chairman of the National Safety Council for a period of three years.

  • Subrahmanyan will guide the National Safety Council which has a major role to play to ensure safety in workplaces under new Occupational Safety, Health and Working Conditions Code, 2020 (OSH Code, 2020).
  • The National Safety Council will be assisting Directorate General Factory Advice Service and Labour Institutes in re-writing the regulations governing OSH in the country which have not been updated for over 50 years.


SCIENCE & TECHNOLOGY 

HAL to develop high-altitude satellite that can fly unmanned for 3 months
Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) unveiled a leap in technology of teaming up unmanned aircraft and vehicles with manned jets similar to the US project of skyborg. It will enhance Indian military strike capabilities.

  • The technology named Combined Air Teaming System (CATS) will have a mother ship, operating from faraway, and four autonomous unmanned aerial vehicle known as CATS Warrior with a capacity to carry out strike stealthily entering 700 kilometres inside enemy territory.
  • These unmanned aerial vehicles are capable of autonomous functions and will also have all the manoeuvring capabilities.


BOOKS & AUTHORS 

Hunter Biden’s memoir ‘Beautiful Things’ to be out in April
Hunter Biden, son of President Joe Biden and an ongoing target for conservatives, has a memoir coming out April 6.

  • The book is called “Beautiful Things” and will center on the younger Biden’s well publicized struggles with substance abuse, according to Gallery Books, an imprint of Simon & Schuster.

International Day of Zero Tolerance to Female Genital Mutilation
International Day of Zero Tolerance for Female Genital Mutilation is observed every year on 6 February in order to spread awareness and put in more efforts to eradicate Female Genital Mutilation.

  • This day encourages civil society, government and other organizations to increase awareness and implement actions against Female Genital Mutilation (FGM).
  • The UNFPA-UNICEF Joint Programme on the Elimination of Female Genital Mutilation and the Inter-African Committee on Traditional Practices (IAC) this year has launched the theme “No Time for Global Inaction, Unite, Fund, and Act to End Female Genital Mutilation.”
