NATIONAL NEWS

AAI to set up Civil Aviation Research Organisation

State-run Airports Authority of India (AAI) will set up a Civil Aviation Research Organisation (CARO) aimed at “finding indigenous solutions” to meet the challenges posed by the growing air traffic.

  • According to AAI, CARO will be set up at Begumpet Airport, Hyderabad.
  • AAI has allocated 1200 crores, spread over 12 years, for establishing Research and Development infrastructure, procurement of tools, skill development and knowledge transfer which will benefit Civil Aviation in a major way.

Govt to give Rs 500 cr to SCI to promote cruise tourism: Shipping

Reiterating that the central government was focused on development of sea route and inland waterways to boostcruise tourism in India, Shipping Minister Nitin Gadkari said that under Sagarmala project, the government will give Rs 500 crore to Shipping Corporation of India to lease out cruises to promote cruise tourism.

Semi-high speed 160 kmph Train 18 ‘Make-in-India to run from September

Train 18 – the code name given to the India’s ambitious semi high-speed train that is a ‘Made in India’ initiative will soon roll out by September. The train that is made by Integral Coach Factory (ICF) based in Chennai has the capacity to run at the speed of 160 Kmph.

  • The luxury train was previously scheduled to come out in July has not been postponed to September.

Law Commission recommends regulating betting

The Law Commission recommended that gambling and betting on sports, including cricket, be allowed as regulated activities taxable under the direct and indirect tax regimes and used as a source for attracting foreign direct investment (FDI).

  • The commission’s report, ‘Legal Framework: Gambling and Sports Betting including Cricket in India’, recommends a number of changes in the law for regulating betting and generating tax revenues from it.

Uttarakhand HC declares animals to be ‘legal persons’

In a first, the Uttarakhand High Court accorded the status of ‘legal person or entity’ to the animals in the state. The HC stated that “they have a distinct persona with corresponding rights, duties and liabilities of a living person.”

Haryana to launch diarrhoea control campaign

The Haryana Health Department will launch an intensive diarrhoea control campaign from July 15 to 30 under which ORS and zinc packets would be distributed to about 26.5 lakh children below five years of age across the state.

UP Police signs MoU with ISRO for crime mapping

The Uttar Pradesh Police signed an MoU with the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) for crime mapping analytics and predictive systems.

  • As part of this MoU, data from UP Police, UP 100 and CCTNS will be made available to the relevant department in ISRO and through analytical software, the state police will be able to map, visualize, and create queries and reports about crimes and criminal incidents.

WB cuts luxury travel for ministers, announces ‘one person, one car’ policy

West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee set a “one person one car” policy for ministers and bureaucrats and mandated economy class for all domestic air travel in a bid to cut costs incurred by the state government.

  • She also ordered cuts on hospitality, food and refreshments on an emergency basis.
  • She further mandated economy class travel in low-cost airlines for all domestic air trips.
  • Banerjee also formed a committee, to be headed by chief secretary Malay Kumar De, to supervise progress of government projects.

Telangana allots 200 acres land to Women Entrepreneurs

The Telangana government has allotted 200 acres to three different women entrepreneurs’ associations in the state.

Art exhibition opens at IGNCA in Delhi

Union Minister of State for Culture Mahesh Sharma inaugurated a public art exhibition titled “Arth: Art for Earth” in Delhi, curated by artist Manav Gupta.

  • With an aim to promote environmental consciousness, Gupta has created six environmental installations, using thousands of earthen lamps (diyas), cigars (chillams) and cups (kulhars) as primary material.


INTERNATIONAL NEWS

India to operate “world’s emptiest airport” in Sri Lanka

The Mattala Rajapaksa International Airport (MRIA) would be operated as a Sri Lanka-India joint venture. The $210 million facility, 241km south-east of Colombo, is dubbed the “world’s emptiest airport” due to a lack of flights.

  • India would operate the airport as a Sri Lanka-India joint venture. The joint venture would see India gain a major stake of the airport. Currently, it is running a massive loss of Rs.20 billion.

NASA’s Mission to Touch the Sun Arrives in the Sunshine State

NASA is prepared for a launch on August 4 to touch the sun, for the first time in human history.

  • NASA unveiled a cutting-edge heat shield that will protect the spacecraft from getting burnt. It was installed on June 27, 2018.
  • The shield will prevent the spacecraft core from being exposed to temperatures around 1,370 degrees Celsius.


BANKING & FINANCE

Bank credit grows at 12.84%, deposits at 7.59%

Bank credit grew by 12.84 per cent to ₹ 86,16,408 crore in the fortnight ended June 22, according to RBI data.

  • In the year-ago fortnight, bank loans stood at ₹ 76,35,689 crore.

HDFC Bank most valuable bank in the emerging market outside China

HDFC Bank has gone past Russia’s Sberbank to become the most valuable bank in the emerging market outside China. HDFC Bank’s current market capitalisation is $78.4 billion against Sberbank’s $74.4 billion.

  • There are four lenders from India that now rank among the world’s 500 most valuable companies. HDFC Bank is followed by its housing finance cousin Housing Development Finance Corporation (HDFC), Kotak Mahindra Bank and State Bank of India.

18th Asian Games: Rani to lead Indian women’s hockey squad

Hockey India announced the 18-member Indian Women’s Hockey Team for the 18th Asian Games 2018, slated to begin in August this year in Jakarta/Palembang.

  • Striker Rani, who guided the Indian Women’s Hockey Team to a victory in the 9th Women’s Asia Cup last year, will lead the squad.

Bajrang Punia claims gold at Tbilisi Grand Prix

Bajrang Punia emerged champion at the Tbilisi Grand Prix in the 65kg category after outplaying Iranian wrestler Mehran Nasiri in the final in Georgia.

Justice Goel appointed chairperson of NGT

Supreme Court judge Adarsh Kumar Goel, who retired recently, has been appointed as the chairperson of the National Green Tribunal (NGT)

  • The post of the chairperson of the green tribunal had been vacant for the past eight months after Justice Swatanter Kumar retired on December 19.
