Govt receives about Rs. 1,426 crore from Coal India Limited as dividend in current FY
Government of India has received about Rs. 1,426 crore from Coal India Limited as dividend in this Financial year recently.

  • Secretary, Department of Investment and Public Asset Management in a tweet said, Government of India has received about Rs. 1,406 crore from Oil and Natural Gas Corporation ONGC as dividend.

Seychelles’ Tax Inspectors Without Borders (TIWB) programme launched in partnership with India
The Seychelles” Tax Inspectors Without Borders (TIWB) programme was launched in partnership with India, the Income-Tax Department said.

  • This programme is expected to be of 12-month duration during which India, in collaboration with the TIWB Secretariat and support of the UNDP Country Office in Mauritius and Seychelles, aims to aid Seychelles in strengthening its tax administration by transferring technical know-how and skills to its tax auditors through sharing of best audit practices.
  • The focus of the programme will be on Transfer Pricing cases of tourism and financial services sectors, the CBDT said.

Centre launches i-Drone, ICMR’s drone-based vaccine delivery model
Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya launched ICMR’s Drone Response and Outreach in North East (i-Drone). The delivery model is aimed at ensuring that life-saving vaccines reach everyone.

  • This is for the first time that a ‘Make in India’ drone has been used in South Asia to transport COVID vaccine over an aerial distance of 15 km in 12-15 mins from the Bishnupur district hospital to Loktak lake, Karang island in Manipur for administration at the primary health centre.
  • Today, 10 beneficiaries will receive the first dose and 8 will receive the second dose at the PHC.

Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya releases UNICEF’s publication ‘The State of the World’s Children 2021
Union Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya released UNICEF’s global flagship publication – “The State of the World’s Children 2021; On My Mind: promoting, protecting and caring for children’s mental health” in New Delhi.

  • The report details the significant impact of COVID-19 pandemic on children’s mental health.
  • Describing significance of the report which focuses on mental health, Mr Mandaviya  said that Mental Health is both an old issue and an emerging issue.
  • As per the report, around 14 percent of 15 to 24-year-olds in India, or 1 in 7 of them , reported often feeling depressed or having little interest in doing things.

Sikkim will ban packaged Mineral Water from 2022
The state of Sikkim has decided to ban packaged mineral water from January 1, 2022.

  • Travellers must take note, and not enter the state with any packaged mineral water bottles. The Sikkim government has been working towards helping the environment heal, and save its natural resources

NW Delhi Police launches Op Sajag’
The northwest district police of Delhi has launched ‘Operation Sajag’ comprising area domination exercises and their special combings and intensive checking at pickets and arrested 116 criminals in the last two days, officials said.

  • Under ‘Operation Sajag’, aimed at keeping a tab on criminals and anti-social elements, special cordon and search operations were conducted in various areas of Delhi‘s northwest district.
  • The campaign was continued for 24 hours amid maximum deployment of police officials from all police stations along with paramilitary forces, making the operation a success.

Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma launches Mission Basundhara to streamline land-related work
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma launched ‘Mission Basundhara’ at a programme organised by the Revenue and Disaster Management department in Guwahati.

  • The mission is a decisive step towards streamlining land revenue services and facilitating easy access to the public for their land-related work.
  • A total of Rs 225 crore will be spent on the implementation of the programme and the mission will enable the rebuilding of all lost land records of the state.


INTERNATIONAL NEWS

India, Japan 3-day Bilateral Maritime Exercise JIMEX held in Arabian Sea
The fifth edition of India-Japan Maritime Bilateral Exercise, JIMEX, between the Indian Navy and the Japan Maritime Self-Defence Force, will be held in Arabian Sea.

  • Indigenously built Guided Missile Stealth Destroyer Kochi and Guided Missile Frigate Teg, under the command of Rear Admiral Ajay Kochhar, Flag Officer Commanding Western Fleet, will represent the Indian Navy in the three-day exercise.
  • The Japanese Maritime Self-Defence Force will be represented by JMSDF ships Kaga, an Izumo Class Helicopter Carrier and Murasame, a Guided Missile Destroyer, led by Rear Admiral IkeuchiIzuru, Commander Escort Flotila – 3 (CCF-3).


BANKING & FINANCE

World Bank approves USD 150 million loan for Tamil Nadu
The World Bank said its board of executive directors has approved a USD 150 million (about Rs 1,112 crore)program to support Tamil Nadu”s vision of making Chennai into a world-class city that is more green, livable, and resilient to climate change.

  • Besides, the World Bank has given its nod to a USD 40 million (around Rs 296 crore) project which will improve the quality of health services in Meghalaya and strengthen the state”s capacity to handle health emergencies, including the COVID-19 pandemic.

SBI, Indian Navy launch NAV-eCash card
State Bank of India and Indian Navy launched SBI’s NAV-eCash card onboard the country’s largest naval aircraft carrier INS Vikramaditya. 

  • The card will obviate the difficulties faced by personnel onboard in handling physical cash during deployment of the ship at high seas.
  • The infrastructure at naval ships inhibits traditional payment solutions particularly when the ship is in high seas where there is no connectivity.

NITI Aayog ties up with Amazon, Intel to boost innovation
Federal policy think-tank NITI Aayog said it has tied up with Amazon Web Services (AWS) and Intel to set up a centre that supports innovation and collaboration among government agencies, start-ups, businesses and domain experts.

  • The centre, located at NITI Aayog’s premises in the capital, will showcase potential of technologies such as artificial intelligence, machine learning, augmented reality and virtual reality, blockchain and robotics to help boost their use.
  • This centre will encourage open innovation and serve as a hub for government, healthcare, education and non-profit start-ups to showcase their solutions, said a statement from NITI Aayog. It will also provide start-ups with an option to access necessary support to enhance and scale up their solutions.

Magnus Carlsen wins the “Meltwater Champions Chess Tour”
World Chess Champion Magnus Carlsen has won the inaugural Meltwater Champions Chess Tour, to claim the non-fungible token (NFT) trophy and $1,00,000 in the finals.

  • The 10-month long online chess tournaments were held on chess24.com from November 22, 2020, till October 4, 2021. The tournaments are not rated by FIDE.

Shooter Aishwary Pratap Singh Tomar Smashes World Record on Way to Gold in Junior World Championship
Young Indian shooter Aishwary Pratap Singh Tomar smashed the world record in the final to win gold in the men’s 50m rifle 3 positions event at the ISSF junior world championships.

  • Tomar equalled the junior world record score of 1185 in qualification to top the field.
  • Frenchman Lucas Kryzs won the silver with a score of 456.5 and Gavin Barnick of USA won bronze with a score of 446.6.

Sanjay Bhargava to head Elon Musk’s Starlink satellite broadband venture in India
In an effort to expand its presence in India, Elon Musk run SpaceX has now appointed a top executive in the country. The leading space firm in the world has announced that Sanjay Bhargava will be joining its team as Starlink Country Director India, effective from next month.

  • From October 1, 2021, Sanjay Bhargava will be working with SpaceX as the Country Director for Starlink in India.

Alok Sahay appointed as Secretary-General and Executive Head of Indian Steel Association
Indian Steel Association (ISA) announced that former executive director of state-owned SAIL, Alok Sahay has assumed office as its new Secretary-General and Executive Head from 1st October 2021, taking over from Bhaskar Chatterjee.

  • Sahay has worked closely with the steel industry and the Government as one of the core industry representatives to advocate on trade-related matters at national and international forums. His experience also includes training at British Steel and tenure as visiting fellow at Queen Elizabeth House, Oxford University.

Nobel Prize for physics awarded to scientists from Japan, Germany, Italy
The Nobel Prize for physics has been awarded to scientists from Japan, Germany and Italy.

  • Syukuro Manabe, 90, and Klaus Hasselmann, 89, were cited for their work in “the physical modeling of Earth’s climate, quantifying variability and reliably predicting  global warming”.
  • The second half of the prize was awarded to Giorgio Parisi, 73, for “the discovery of the interplay of disorder and fluctuations in physical systems from atomic to planetary scales.”

Shiv Nadar, Mallika Srinivasan receive 2021 Global Leadership Award
Prominent Indian industrialists Shiv Nadar and Mallika Srinivasan have been chosen by a top India-centric business advocacy group as the recipients of its 2021 Global Leadership Award.

  • The two top leaders will be honoured at the 2021 India Ideas Summit.
  • Given annually since 2007, the Global Leadership Awards recognise top corporate executives from the United States and India who have demonstrated exemplary leadership and played a major role in advancing the strategic and economic partnership between the countries,

Elon Musk overtakes Jeff Bezos to become world’s richest person
Tesla’s CEO Elon Musk, with a net worth of $213 billion has pipped Amazon’s Jeff Bezos to become world’s richest person again, according to Bloomberg Billionaires Index.

  • In the past one-week the Tesla founder has gained around $13 billion in net worth as the share price of electric vehicle maker surged .
  • According to the real-time data of Bloomberg index, Jeff Bezos has a net worth of $197 billion, followed by Bernard Arnault, the chairman of Louis Vuitton (LVMH) with a net worth of $160 billion. Facebook chief Mark Zuckerberg and Bill Gates take fourth and fifth places in the index with a net worth of $132 billion and $128 billion respectively.


OBITUARIES

Actor Arvind Trivedi, who played the role of Ravan in Hindu epic Ramayan, passes away
Veteran actor Arvind Trivedi, best known for playing Raavan on the popular 1986 mythological show Ramayan, died following a heart attack. He was in his early 80s.

  • Arvind Trivedi acted in nearly 300 Hindi and Gujarati movies and found immense popularity on the Ramanand Sagar 1986 TV series Ramayan.
  • Besides his acting career, in 1991, Arvind Trivedi was elected as a Member of Parliament from Sabarkatha constituency as a member of Bharatiya Janata Party and was in the office till 1996.

Noted Cartoonist Yesudasan passes away at 83
Noted Cartoonist Yesudasan passed away in Kochi. He was 83. Yesudasan was under treatment for Covid 19.

  • Yesudasan entered the world of political cartoons through Janayugom Malayalam Daily. Later, he worked with Shankar’s Weekly published from New Delhi and satirical magazines Cut-Cut and Tuk Tuk.
  • Later he joined the Malayala Manorama Group of Publications as its Staff Cartoonist, where he served for 23 years. Yesudasan was the former Chairman of Kerala Lalitha Kala Academy and was the founder Chairman of Kerala Cartoon Academy.
  • He was felicitated with Lifetime Achievement Award by the Indian Institute of Cartoonists while the Kerala Government honoured him with the Swadeshabhimani Kesari Award for his contributions to the cartoon and media sector. Yesudasan has also authored four books.
