T.N. finishes on top in micro-irrigation coverage
At a time when every segment of society is reeling under the impact of COVID-19, farmers have brought some cheer to Tamil Nadu. In the just-concluded financial year 2019-20, the State finished on top at the all-India level for micro-irrigation coverage.
- This has been achieved as part of implementation of the Pradhan Mantri Krishi Sinchayee Yojana (PMKSY), a programme aimed at promoting the “more crop per drop” concept by focussing on water-saving technologies.
- However, as regards the cumulative total coverage under the PMKSY during 2015-2020, Tamil Nadu occupies the fourth spot with about 5.62 lakh ha, according to the PMKSY website.The first place goes to Karnataka (8.16 lakh ha) followed by Andhra Pradesh (7.17 lakh ha) and Gujarat (7 lakh ha).
Indian Railways set up fumigation tunnel in Haryana to curb coronavirus
To curb the spread of highly contagious coronavirus, Indian Railways set up a fumigation tunnel at Jagadhri Workshop near Yamuna Nagar in Haryana.
- People attending the workshop would undergo the process of spray fumigation while passing through a tunnel like chamber before going inside, in order to maintain cleanliness and reduce the risk of infection.
Government sets up group to coordinate COVID-19 related response activities
The government notified the empowered group set up for coordination with private sector, NGOs and international organisations for COVID-19 related response activities.

Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur: Standard Chartered Bank first entity to fund ventilator prototype by IIT Kanpur
Standard Chartered Bank has come forward as the first entity to support an indigenized, affordable, portable and invasive ventilator prototype being developed by IIT Kanpur and its incubated company Nocca Robotics along with the Indian Angel Network.
- Standard Chartered Bank has approved a generous CSR funding that will be used for research and development of the prototype, followed by testing of the device and clinical trials.
Airtel Payments Bank ties up with Bharti AXA General Insurance for health insurance plans
Airtel Payments Bank said it has partnered with Bharti AXA General Insurance to offer health insurance plans to provide cover and give financial protection against COVID-19.
- Under the tie-up, the companies are offering two health insurance plans — Bharti AXA Group Health Assure which offers lump sum benefit of Rs 25,000 and Group Hospital Cash which provides daily benefit starting Rs 500 per day — to provide protection against COVID-19.

SBI pegs FY21 growth at 2.6%
SBI house economists have pegged the growth forecast for January-March at 2.5 per cent and for 2020-21 at 2.6 per cent given the massive disruptions to businesses and the economy due to the COVID-19-driven lockdowns, which has upended at least 70 per cent of the economy
- The 21-day lockdown will cost the economy at least Rs 8 lakh crore, according to a report by SBI Research, which says at least 70 per cent of the economy is on a standstill because of this.
- The country’s share in global GDP currently is 3.5 per cent.
Uber partners Flipkart to deliver essential supplies to customers
Uber announced that it is tying up with e-commerce giant Flipkart to provide delivery of essential supplies to customers during the ongoing COVID-19 crisis.
- The company will facilitate the delivery of supplies to consumers across Delhi, Mumbai, and Bangalore.
- The money earned through these deliveries will be given to the drivers.

IWF bans Malaysia and Thailand weightlifters at Tokyo Olympics
The Independent Member Federation Sanctions Panel (IMFSP) of the International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) has imposed disciplinary sanctions on Thailand and Malaysia and banned both the countries to from participating in weightlifting events at the Tokyo Olympics.
- The IMFPS also suspended the Thai Amateur Weightlifting Association (TAWA) for three years, while the Malaysian Weightlifting Federation (MWF) has been given a one-year ban.

SC extends tenure of TDSAT Chairperson by three months
The Supreme Court extended by three months the tenure of chairperson of Telecom Disputes Settlement and Appellate Tribunal, TDSAT which is scheduled to end on 20th of this month.
- A bench headed by Chief Justice S A Bobde, hearing the matter via video conferencing, extended the tenure of TDSAT chairperson by three months and, asked the Centre to expedite the appointment process for members of the tribunal.
UB Pravin Rao appointed new chairman of Nasscom
IT services industry body Nasscom has appointed UB Pravin Rao, chief operating officer, Infosys, as the chairman for the current financial year.
- Rao, who was previously vice- chairman of Nasscom, would succeed Keshav Murugesh, Group CEO, WNS Global Services.
- Also, Rekha M Menon, chairman and senior managing director of Accenture in India, has been named as the vice chairperson for 2020-21.
