NATIONAL NEWS

‘Pani Maah’ campaign to increase pace of implementation of Jal Jeevan Mission in Ladakh
The Union Territory of Ladakh that launched a month-long campaign–‘Pani Maah’ (water month) with an aim to increase the pace of implementation of Jal Jeevan Mission in the UT and to inform and engage village communities on the importance of clean water.

  • ‘Pani Maah’ is being run at the Block and Panchayat level in two phases. The first phase is being run from August 1-14 and the second phase will run from August 16-30, 2021, informed the official release by the Ministry of Jal Shakti.
  • The campaign will adopt a three-pronged approach- focussing on water quality testing, planning and strategizing water supply, and seamless functioning of Pani Sabha in villages.

NFDB inks MoU with PNB to extend financial assistance to Fisheries sector 
National Fisheries Development Board (NFDB) under Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry & Dairying, Government of India has entered into an MoU with Punjab National Bank, the premier Bank in the country, to extend financial assistance through the Bank.

  • The government created the Fisheries and Aquaculture Infrastructure Development Fund (FIDF) in 2018-19 and is being implemented with a total fund size of Rs 7,522.48 crore comprising Rs 5,266.40 crore to be raised by Nodal Lending Entities (NLE), like NABARD, NCDC & all scheduled banks.

India’s first bio-bank for heart failure research inaugurated 
The first National Heart Failure Biobank (NHFB) in the country that would collect blood, biopsies, and clinical data as a guide to future therapies was inaugurated at the Sree Chitra Tirunal Institute for Medical Sciences and Technology (SCTIMST).The facility will be useful for the research and treatment of post-Covid heart failure.

  • the storage facilities include minus 20 to minus 80-degrees mechanical freezers and a liquid nitrogen storage system which can store bio-samples at minus 140 degrees perpetually for years.Currently, there are facilities to store nearly 25,000 bio-samples.
  • The bio-samples include the blood, serum, tissue samples obtained during open-heart surgery and peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) and genomic DNA collected from heart failure patients. The biobank activity is supervised by a Technical Advisory Committee (TAC) with a member from ICMR.

In a first, Maldives style water villas to be set up in Lakshadweep
In a first in India, Lakshadweep will soon have water villas similar to those in the Maldives.

  • Lakshadweep Administrator Praful Khoda Patel said water villas will be set up at the cost of ₹800 crore to attract tourists to the scenic beauty of Lakshadweep.
  • This project is India’s first of its kind, where the world-class facility will be provided by a solar-powered, eco-friendly villa.

Haryana inks MoU with Wallmart Vridi and Haqdarshak to take MSME products to international market 
In a bid to ensure pathway for MSME products to International market, Haryana Government signed MoU with ‘Walmart Vriddhi’ and ‘Haqdarshak’ company.

  • The MoUs were signed in the presence of Haryana Deputy Chief Minister, Dushyant Chautala who holds the charge of Industries department.
  • To promote MSMEs apart from large industries, many important concessions have been given to investors in ‘Haryana Enterprises and Employment Policy-2020’.

Govt makes a sharp cut in Mudra loan target during pandemic
The government has set the loans disbursement target under the PM Mudra Yojana (PMMY) at Rs 3 trillion for the current financial year as compared to Rs 3.21 trillion sanctioned in FY21. Experts attribute the lower target to increased allocation under the credit guarantee scheme for small businesses.

  • Out of the Rs 3.21 trillion worth loans sanctioned under the Pradhan Mantri Mudra Yojana (PMMY) in the last financial year, Rs 3.12 trillion were disbursed to entrepreneurs, according to official data.
  • The figure was even higher in the financial year 2019-20 with total loans sanctioned at Rs 3.37 trillion, out of which loans worth Rs 3.29 trillion were disbursed.


BANKING & FINANCE

RBI extends current account rules implementation deadline to October 31
The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has allowed time to banks till October 31 to implement changes in terms of managing current accounts, following reports of small businesses being hit with account freezing in the last few days.

  • The initial deadline had ended on July 31, leading to thousands of current accounts being closed or frozen by banks. Lenders had requested the RBI for some more time to resolve the operational issues in implementing the provisions of the August 2020 circular in letter and spirit.

NABARD joins hands with CWC to help farmers
Farmers, including small and marginal ones, would be able to use warehousing facilities of the State-owned Central Warehousing Corporation (CWC) for storing their produce.The National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development said it has joined hands with CWC to provide better storage facilities.

  • Though this first-of-its-kind arrangement is mainly meant for farmers affiliated to farmer producer organisations (FPOs), it would be extended to individual farmers, too.
  • The scheme will be launched as a pilot in Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu and Telangana.

Poland’s Jan-Krzysztof Duda wins FIDE World Cup 2021
Jan-Krzysztof Duda of Poland won the 2021 FIDE World Cup, beating GM Sergey Karjakin convincingly in his white game, thereby avoiding a tiebreak.

  • The 23-year-old Polish grandmaster finished the tournament undefeated and took home USD 88,000. Karjakin won USD 64,000 for coming second and, like Duda, qualified for the 2022 FIDE Candidates Tournament.

In a first, Dhriti Banerjee appointed first woman director of Zoological Survey of India
Dhriti Banerjee has become the first woman to be appointed as director of the 105-year-old Zoological Survey of India (ZSI).

  • The 51-year-old has had an illustrious career as a scientist, conducting research in taxonomy, zoogeography, morphology and molecular systematics. She has been co-ordinator of ZSI’s Digital Sequence Information Project since 2012.

Sjoerd Marijne steps down as India women’s hockey team coach
Hours after the Indian women’s hockey team finished fourth in the Tokyo Olympics and won the hearts of the fans back home, Sjoerd Marijne revealed that he would be stepping down as the coach of the women’s national hockey team.

  • The 47-year-old coached the Indian women’s hockey team to its best-ever performance in the Tokyo Olympic Games, guiding them to a creditable fourth-place finish.
  • The Dutch coach had taken charge of the team for the first time in 2017.

India-assisted Mangdechhu Hydroelectric Project in Bhutan gets Brunel Medal
Bhutan’s India assisted Mangdechhu Hydroelectric Project was conferred with the Brunel Medal awarded by the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE), London.

  •  The award is given as a mark of excellence in civil engineering within the industry and was handed over by the Indian envoy to Bhutan Ruchira Kamboj to Chairman, Mangdechhu Hydroelectric Project Authority Lyonpo Loknath Sharma.
  • The Brunel Medal is historically given to major projects and organizations from across the world.


OBITUARIES

India’s Olympian footballer SS ‘Babu’ Narayan passes away 
Two-times Olympian Shankar Subramaniam, alias Babu, Nayaran passed away. Nayaran, who was India’s goalkeeper during the 1956 and 1960 Olympics, was 86.

  • Besides representing Maharashtra in football and basketball, Narayan emerged as one of the most reliable goalkeepers in India. His decade-long career for the national team also included the stellar effort of India finishing fourth in the 1956 Olympics and representing India in the 1964 Asian Games.
