Ban on cash dealings exceeding 2 lakh not applicable for bank, PO withdrawals

The income tax department announced that ban on cash transaction in excess of Rs 2 lakh will not be applicable to withdrawals from banks and post office savings accounts.

  • Through the Finance Act 2017, the government has banned cash transactions of over Rs 2 lakh and said a penalty of an equal amount would be levied on the receiver.
  • In a clarification on the newly inserted Section — 269ST — in the I-T Act, the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) said the restriction shall not apply to withdrawal from banks and post offices.

NPCI disburses Rs. 245 cr in prize money under Niti Aayog’s Lucky Draw scheme

National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), the umbrella organisation for all retail payment systems in the country, has disbursed over Rs. 245 crore worth of prize money to about 18 lakh winners under the NITI Aayog’s Lucky Draw schemes for consumers and merchants.

  • This initiative was announced to encourage people to carry out more digital transactions.

Centre kicks off programme on cyber physical systems

With autonomous vehicles and robot-executed surgeries becoming commonplace around the world, the Department of Science and Technology (DST) has initiated a Cyber Physical Systems (CPS) programme.

  • It deals with self-driven cars, autonomous unmanned vehicles and aircraft navigation systems
  • An initial budget of Rs.100 crore has been earmarked for the project in the current financial year.

India extends $4.5 billion new line of credit to Bangladesh

India and Bangladesh have signed many agreements in strategic sectors like defence and civil nuclear cooperation during Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s visit to India.

  • In a joint statement after signing of agreements in Delhi, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced a new line of concessional credit of $4.5 billion for implementation of development projects in Bangladesh.
  • Apart from that, Modi also announced $500 million of credit for defence procurement in the country.

Kolkata- Khulna-Dhaka bus service flagged off from Kolkata  

A Kolkata-Khulna-Dhaka bus service (named Maitree Express-2) has been flagged off from Kolkata.

  • This is the third such service that has been introduced. The two other services are on the Kolkata-Dhaka-Agartala and the Kolkata-Dhaka routes.

Sex ratio in Haryana touches 950 mark for first time

Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar announced that the sex ratio at birth stood at 950 girls to 1,000 boys for the first time in the history of the state in March this year.

  • Haryana had ranked the worst among all states in sex ratio in the country according to Census 2011.

NBA launches basketball school in Mumbai

The National Basketball Association announced the setting up of its first basketball school, a network of tuition-based basketball development programmes, in Mumbai.

  • The school, as part of a multi-year agreement announced with India On Track (IOT), is open to male and female players between ages 6-18.

India jumps 12 spots in WEF’s global travel & tourism ranking

India has jumped 12 places to 40th rank globally in Global Travel and Tourism Competitiveness Report 2017 by World Economic Forum.

  • Spain is ranked at the top in the list.

Records broken by India after attaining 101st spot in FIFA rankings

India moved up to 101st in the latest FIFA rankings. With their latest jump, the Blue Tigers have inched ever closer to breaking into the top 100.

  • India are currently ranked 11th in Asia.

Shyam Kumar claims gold in Thailand International

Indian boxer K Shyam Kumar (49kg) clinched a gold medal at the Thailand International Tournament in Bangkok without even stepping inside the ring for his summit clash

  • He was to take on Olympic champion Hasanboy Dusmatov of Uzbekistan in the final. But Dusmatov pulled out of the bout owing to an injury.

Malala set to be youngest UN Messenger of Peace

Nobel Peace Prize winner Malala Yousafzai is set to become the United Nations’ youngest-ever “Messenger of Peace.”

  • She will help promote girl’s education around the world as part of her new role.
  • Yousafzai became the youngest—ever Nobel Peace Prize laureate in 2014.
