BS-VI compliant vehicles to display green sticker
The Government has mandated a one cm green sticker, providing registration details, in all BS-VI compliant motor vehicles. The order will come into force from October 1, 2020.

  • The order was issued amending the Motor Vehicles (High Security Registration Plates) order, 2018.
  • This HSRP or third number plate will be fitted on the inside of the windshield of each newly manufactured vehicle by the manufacturers.

Union Minister Dr. Jitendra Singh launches COVID BEEP, India’s first physiological parameters monitoring system for COVID-19 patients
Union Minister for Development of North Eastern Region, Dr. Jitendra Singh has launched COVID BEEP, India’s first indigenous, cost effective, wireless physiological parameters monitoring system for COVID-19 patients, Dr Singh said COVID BEEP is to emerge as an antidote to the original COVID.

  • COVID BEEP (Continuous Oxygenation & Vital Information Detection Biomed ECIL ESIC Pod) is India’s first indigenous, cost effective, wireless physiological parameters monitoring system for COVID-19 patients, developed by ESIC Medical College Hyderabad in collaboration with IIT Hyderabad and Department Of Atomic Energy.
  • COVID BEEP would emerge as an effective antidote to the original COVID; the pandemic which the entire world is currently grappling with.

Gujarat, Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra Top in FSSAI Food Safety Index for 2019-20
Gujarat, Tamil Nadu and Maharashtra have topped an index that ranked states ensuring food safety in 2019-20 said by Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI)’s second index on food safety, which was released on the occasion of World Food Safety Day

  • Among the smaller states, Goa came first followed by Manipur and Meghalaya. Among Union Territories, Chandigarh, Delhi and Andaman Islands secured top ranks, FSSAI said in a statement.
  • The index ranks states on five parameters of food safety: human resources and institutional data, compliance, food testing facility, training and capacity building besides consumer empowerment

Govt sets up taskforce to examine maternal mortality rate, age of motherhood
A taskforce has been set up by the government to examine matters pertaining to the age of motherhood, imperatives of lowering maternal mortality rate and improvement of nutritional levels.

  • The 10-member taskforce will be headed under the chairmanship of Jaya Jaitly.
  • It will suggest suitable legislations or amendments in the existing laws to support its recommendations; and also work out a detailed roll-out plan with timelines to implement these recommendations

Prabhakar Raghavan announced New Head Of Google Search
Google has announced that it has appointed Prabhakar Raghavan as the head of Search and Assistant.

  • Raghavan will be taking over the position from Ben Gomes who is shifting to a new role in the organisation and will report to Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai.

IIFL Finance Ropes in Rohit Sharma as its First-ever Brand Ambassador
Non-Banking finance company, IIFL Finance has signed up cricketer Rohit Sharma as its brand ambassador. 

  • The company has launched 30-second message titled “Rohit Sharma Ki Seedhi Baat”, under its first-ever campaign #SeedhiBaat with Rohit Sharma, which is a public service message advising people on safety guidelines and rules to follow during lockdown to fight Covid19 outbreak.

Javed Akhtar Becomes First Indian to Receive Richard Dawkins Award
Veteran writer-lyricist Javed Akhtar has won the 2020 Richard Dawkins Award for critical thinking, holding religious dogma up to scrutiny, advancing human progress and humanist values.

  • Akhtar has become the first Indian to be given the honour, which recognises distinguished individual from the field of science, scholarship, education, or entertainment, who publicly proclaims the values of secularism and rationalism and upholding scientific truth.


OBITUARIES

Former world gymnastics champion Kurt Thomas passes away
Former Olympian Kurt Thomas, the first American male to win the World Championship gold in gymnastics, died from the complications of a stroke. He was 64.

  • Thomas earned a total of six medals at the 1979 worlds, an American record for medals at a single worlds that Simone Biles equalled in two years ago.
  • He retired after the US boycott of the Moscow Olympics.

Former India footballer Hamza Koya passes away
Former footballer Hamza Koya, who represented India and Maharashtra in the Santhosh Trophy, passed away in a Mallapuram hospital due to coronavirus. He was 61

  • Hamza Koya played as a wing-back position and represented Maharashtra in Santosh Trophy from 1981 to 1986 and selected for Indian Soccer camp twice.
  • In his two-decade-long sports career, he represented Calicut University during 1976-78, Western Railways, Union Bank , RCF,TATA Sports and Orkay mills from 1976 to 1996. He coached Orkay Silk Mills team for a short period.

Kannada actor Chiranjeevi Sarja passes away
Promising Kannada actor Chiranjeevi Sarja died of heart attack in Bengaluru. He was 39.

  • Chiranjeevi Sarja made his film debut in 2009 with the Kannada film Vayuputra and acted in 22 films. Four other films, with him as the lead actor, are in various stages of production.


IMPORTANT DAYS

World Food Safety Day 2020
WHO in collaboration with the Food and Agricultural Organisation of the United Nations (FAO) has organised the second ‘World Food Safety Day’ on June 7 particularly to ensure safe and healthy food practices.

  • Their theme, ‘Food Safety, Everyone’s Business’ seeks to bring together the government, food producers and consumers, alike to share the responsibility of keeping food safe and of raising awareness about the many ways in which lax practices can cause serious health issues.

World Oceans Day 
June 8 is World Oceans Day, the United Nations day for celebrating the role of the oceans in our everyday life and inspiring action to protect the ocean and sustainably use marine resources.

  • The theme of UN World Oceans Day 2020 is “Innovation for a Sustainable Ocean.”
