India offers $ 236 mn additional credit to Mongolia for building oil refinery: Pradhan

India has offered an additional $ 236 million credit to Mongolia for setting up a 1.5 million tonne per annum oil refinery in that country.

Govt launches Ganga Aamantran Abhiyan, a month long exploratory open water rafting expedition

Jal Shakti Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat launched a unique initiative called ‘Ganga Amantran’ to connect with the stakeholders of the river. It is a pioneering exploratory open- water rafting and kayaking expedition on the Ganga river.

  • The expedition started at Devaprayag and willculminate at Ganga Sagar covering the entire stratch of over 25,000 kilometres of the River. This is the first ever effort by National Mission for Clean Ganga to raft across the entire stretch of the river and also the longest ever social campaign undertaken through an adventure sporting activity to spread the message of River Rejuvenation and Water Conservation on a massive scale.

Govt sets up high-level panel to check money laundering activities

The government set up a high-level inter-ministerial committee chaired by Ajay Bhushan Pandey, revenue secretary for better coordination among various departments and law enforcement agencies to prevent money laundering activities.

BS VI fuel will be available in country from April 1 next year: Javadekar

Union Minister Prakash Javadekar said that the Bharat Stage (BS) VI fuel will be made available in the country from April 1 next year. The BS-VI compliant vehicles will also be made available from next year. This initiative will reduce pollution in the air by 80-90 per cent.

First Rafale jet handed over to Rajnath Singh

The first of the 36 French-built Rafale fighter jet bearing the tail number RB-001 was formally delivered to Defence Minister Rajnath Singh.

  • Singh received the aircraft at the Rafale fighter jet handing-over ceremony at Merignac in the presence of French Minister of Armed Forces.

UP CM Yogi Adityanath launches Mukhya Mantri Kanya Sumangala Yojana

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on the occasion of Mahanavmi introduced the Mukhya Mantri Kanya Sumangala Yojana.

  • This program aims at empowering the girl child for which an amount of 15 thousand rupees will be provided to every family in which a girl child takes birth.

‘Panic button’ for taxi riders in Telangana

To provide a safe and secure environment to commuters, especially women, the Telangana police have integrated police patrol systems with passenger cabs. The system would enable the riders in distress to press the panic button provided in the taxi facilitators app.

  • This is being done through the police’s ‘Hawk Eye’ app, which will now be linked to each app that offers a cab service.

Southeast Asia’s net economy to top $100 billion this year

Southeast Asia’s internet economy is on track to exceed $100 billion this year before tripling by 2025, becoming one of the world’s fastest-growing arenas for online commerce thanks to a youthful population increasingly comfortable with smartphones. This is according to e-Conomy SEA, a report jointly published by Google, Singapore investment company Temasek and American consultancy Bain & Company.

  • Among the six countries researched in the report, Indonesia and Vietnam were noted to be leading the pack with their average annual internet growth rate exceeding 40 percent since 2015.

S&P slashes India growth forecast for FY20 to 6.3%

S&P Global Ratings reduced India’s growth projection for 2019-20 from 7.1% to 6.3%, but said it expected a “decent, albeit unspectacular” recovery in 2020-21 to 7%.

India’s Koneru Humpy climbs up to No. 3 in latest rankings

India’s Koneru Humpy is the new World No. 3, according to the latest rankings issued by FIDE. Recently, the 32-year-old from Andhra Pradesh made a brilliant comeback after a two-year hiatus to win the FIA Women’s Grand Prix held in Skolkovo, Russia.

India to host 3×3 Basketball Qualifiers for 2020 Tokyo Olympics

India will be hosting the 3×3 basketball qualifiers for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics in March next year, basketball world governing body FIBA has announced.

  • The tournament will feature 40 teams (20 in each gender), the location for which will be announced later.

Michel Mayor and Didier Queloz; James Peebles share 2019 Nobel Prize in Physics

Canadian-American cosmologist James Peebles and Swiss scientists Michel Mayor and Didier Queloz won the 2019 Nobel Prize for Physics for shedding light on the evolution of the universe and discovering planets orbiting distant suns.

  • Peebles, of Princeton University in the United States, was awarded half the 9-million-Swedish-crown ($910,000) prize while Mayor and Queloz, from the University of Geneva in Switzerland, shared the other half.

IFS officer Ramesh Pandey selected for Asia Environmental Enforcement Award by UNEP

Senior Indian Forest Service officer Ramesh Pandey has been selected for the prestigious Asia Environmental Enforcement Award by the United Nations Environment Programme.

  • The 1996-batch IFS officer, posted as Chief Conservator Forests in Lucknow and Secretary, UP State Bio-diversity Board, is known for his investigation and intelligence gathering on poachers.

Indian-origin Ankiti Bose & Arjun Bansal in Fortune 2019 ‘40 Under 40’ list

Arjun Bansal, the Vice President of artificial intelligence (AI) software and AI Lab at Intel, and Ankiti Bose, the CEO and co-founder of Zilingo, are two Indian-origin individuals featuring in Fortune’s 2019 ‘40 Under 40’ list.

  • The 40 Under 40 is an annual list by the American magazine featuring the 40 most influential and inspiring young people in business under the age of 40.


OBITUARIES

Konkani folk artiste Gopal Gowda passes away

Renowned Kudmi Konkani folk artiste M Gopal Gowda has passed away due to a cardiac arrest. He was 64.

  • Gowda was an accomplished Kudmi folk artiste whose troupe had rendered more than 200 performances across the country.
