Pravasi Bharatiya Divas kicks off in Bengaluru

The 14th Pravasi Bharatiya Divas or Non-Resident Indian (NRI) day got off to a colourful started on January 7, 2017, with the young Indian diaspora from across the world connecting with their motherland and discovering its wonders.

  • About 400 young Indian diaspora participated in the Youth Pravis Bharatiya Divas (PBD) at the inaugural session on “Role of the diaspora in the transformation of India”.
  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi will officially inaugurate the event on January 8, 2017 and deliver the keynote address in the presence of Portugal Prime Minister Antonio Costa as the chief guest.

All India Conference of Waqf Boards begins

The All India Conference of Chairpersons and Chief Executive Officers of states and union territories’ Waqf Boards began in the national capital.

  • The conference was inaugurated by Minister of State for Minority Affairs Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi.

HRD constitutes committee to selected new UGC chairman

The Union HRD ministry has decided to constitute a three member committee to search for a new chairman of the University Grants Commission (UGC) as the tenure of the present incumbent Ved Prakash is about to end.

  • According to officials the ministry has decided to constitute the panel which would be headed by Dr H R Nagendra, who is Chancellor of S-VYASA and is also likely to include former VC of Saurashtra University D P Singh and former VC of Lucknow University.
