World Bank projects global growth at 2.7 per cent in 2017

In an encouraging sign, the World Bank projected a global growth of 2.7 per cent in 2017, even as it observed that stagnant global trade, subdued investment and heightened policy uncertainty marked another difficult year for the world economy.

  • The global economic growth is forecast to accelerate moderately to 2.7 per cent in 2017 after a post-crisis low of 2.3 per cent in 2016.

World Bank pares India’s growth forecast for FY17 to 7% from 7.6%

The World Bank has pared India’s growth forecast for FY17 to 7% from 7.6% estimated earlier, attributing it partly to demonetisation of high-value currency notes.


Barclays becomes first lender to tie up with India Post

British lender Barclays became the first bank to have a national tie-up with the India Post which runs over 1,55,000 post offices across the country.

From introducing digital wallets to installing point of sale (PoS) terminals (card swiping machines) at counters, temples in Tamil Nadu are embracing digital mode in order to help devotees make their donations without any hassle.

  • Helped by HDFC Bank, five temples in Kanyakumari district in southern Tamil Nadu have introduced digital wallets and PoS to enable their devotees pay donations.

PhonePe joins Flipkart App

PhonePe, a UPI-based mobile payment company acquired by Flipkart last year, now launched an integrated payment option on the ecommerce firm’s Android app. This allows Flipkart customers to do transactions using the unified payment interface (UPI) from within the mobile app.


Oxigen Wallet’s Artificial Intelligent Chatbot launched in collaboration with Niki.ai

Oxigen Wallet announced the launch of ‘Chat & Pay’ a chatbot service.

  • Powered by personal assistant Niki’s artificial intelligence engine, Oxigen Wallet users will be able to pay for services like recharge or bill payments by simply chatting with Niki’s assistant within the Oxigen Wallet app.

India announces $100 million Line of Credit to Kenya

India announced a $100-million Line of Credit to Kenya for agricultural mechanisation after talks between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta during which they also decided to deepen economic cooperation, identifying expansion of bilateral trade as a “priority”.

Centre looks to raise up to Rs 6,000 crore via CPSE ETF

After a gap of nearly three years, the Centre will raise up to Rs 6,000 crore through a follow-on fund offer of an extant CPSE exchange traded fund (ETF) this fiscal. The issue will be open for subscription from January 17 to 20.

  • The ETF FFO issue size (is of) Rs 4,500 crore; plus green shoe option of Rs 1,500 crore.

NITI Aayog to come out with 3-year action plan to accelerate economic growth

Government has already decided to do away with the practice preparing annual budgets on the basis of five year plans from next fiscal.

  • NITI Aayog will come out with three-year action plan within two months with a view to accelerate economic growth and make it more inclusive by focusing on the health sector.

Tamil Nadu declares all districts drought-hit

The Tamil Nadu government declared all districts of the state drought-hit following a deficit in the northeast monsoon last year. Chief Minister O Panneerselvam announced several schemes for farmers, including waiver in land tax. He confirmed 17 suicides of drought-affected farmers in the past two months and announced aid of Rs 3 lakh to each of the bereaved families.
