68th Republic Day concludes with customary fanfare

India celebrated its 68th Republic Day with great joy and zeal. A major attraction of this year’s parade was a 149-member UAE contingent led by Lt Col Abood Musabeh Abood Musabeh Alghfeli, consisting of the UAE Presidential Guard, the Air Force, the Navy and Army contingent led by a UAE band consisting of 35 musicians marching on Rajpath and presenting a ceremonial salute to President Pranab Mukherjee.

  • This year’s guest of honour is the Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan.
  • The Tricolour was unfurled in the presence of President Pranab Mukherjee and followed by traditional 21 gun salute.
  • All states of India also celebrated 68th Republic Day with respective Governors unfurling the Indian flag.
  • The Theme of 2017 Republic Day is: Skill India and Beti Bachao Beti Padhao.

Padma Awards 2017 announced

Padma Awards – one of the highest civilian Awards of the country, are conferred in three categories, namely, Padma Vibhushan, Padma Bhushan and Padma Shri. The awards are announced on the occasion of Republic Day every year.

  • Padma Vibhushan awardees: K.J.Yesudas, Sadhguru Jaggi Vasudev, Sharad Pawar, Murli Manohar Joshi, Prof. Udipi Ramachandra Rao, Sunder Lal Patwah (Posthumous), VishwaMohan Bhat (Posthumous).
  • Padma Bhushan awardees: Late Shri Cho Ramaswamy (Posthumous), Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn (Foreigner) from Thailand, etc.
  • Padma Shri awardees: Some of the awardees are Virat Kohli, Shekar Naik, Deepa Malik, Dipa Karmakar, Sakshi Malik, Mariyappan Thangavelu, Vikas Gowda, P R Shreejesh.

Panneerselvam makes history, first CM to host national flag on Republic day

O Panneerselvam, TN CM raised the tricolour as Tamil Nadu Governor (in-charge) C Vidyasagar Rao was in Mumbai on Republic Day. Rao holding full charge of Maharashtra, could not make himself available in Tamil Nadu.

  • He became the first Chief Minister to host the national flag on the Republic day.
  • * On the Republic Day the Governor of the state hosts the flag, while on the Independence Day the Chief Minister does the same.

Karnataka Bank inks pact with Tirth Agro Technology

Karnataka Bank Ltd has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Rajkot-based Tirth Agro Technology Pvt Ltd (manufacturer of agricultural equipment and implements) for financing agricultural mechanisation.


India improves on transparency corruption index, scores 40 out of 100

India has marginally improved its ranking in the graft watchdog Transparency International’s corruption perception index for 2016, a list topped by New Zealand and Denmark.


Madhya Pradesh CM announces total ban on polythene bags

MP Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan announced a total ban on polythene carry bags from May 1 in Madhya Pradesh in a bid to conserve environment, protect cows and promote cleanliness.


Andhra Pradesh government announces Rs 100 crore fund for fintech startups

Having identified fintech as a promising space to generate jobs, Andhra Pradesh announced a Rs 100-crore fund of funds to invest in startups in this area.

  • Andhra Pradesh aims to turn the state into a global fintech hub with this funding. The state already has a fintech tower which houses startups like Paytm and more from other countries.

Gujarat government pardons 439 prisoners on Republic Day eve

The decision to pardon the remaining sentences of these 439 prisoners was taken by Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani on humanitarian grounds.


Mirzapur district of Uttar Pradesh attempts Guinness world record for biggest rangoli

 In order to encourage voters, the Naxalite prone Mirzapur district of Uttar Pradesh attempted Guinness world record for the biggest rangoli created in an area of 39,125 sq mts ​on the National voter’s day.

  • The participants successfully overtook the previous record of the largest ​R​angoli pattern created in 24,835.62 sq mt area by College Of Engineering Pune on 2 April 2016.
  • “With the theme, ‘no voter left behind’, the ​Ra​ngoli was designed to encourage people with disabilities and female voters to come out.

India’s largest online travel portal MakeMyTrip has launched the first ever social luxury travel magazine called ‘Luxury Travel Times’.

Emmy award-winning US actress Mary Tyler Moore has died at the aged of 80.

  • She was best known for her television roles in the 1960s sitcom The Dick Van Dyke Show and the eponymous The Mary Tyler Moore Show in the 1970s.
