RBI: Notes which have messages scribbled are legal tender

The Reserve Bank of India has clarified that currency notes which have messages scribbled on it are legal tender. The notes however, cease to be legal tender if message scribbled on it is political in nature.

  • The RBI had issued a circular in 2016 which stated that bank branches that refuse to exchange soiled notes from people will have to pay a penalty of Rs 10,000.

Banks to hold camps on digital payments from April 1

RB Ihas asked banks to organise special camps from April 1 to educate public about digital payments through UPI and 99# (USSD) code platforms.

Half of India-Bangladesh border fenced

Half of the 4,096-km border India shares with Bangladesh has been fenced. Land acquisition is a major challenge to completing the work by the 2019 deadline.

  • The border runs along West Bengal for 2,216.7 km, Assam 263 km, Meghalaya 443 km, Tripura 856 km and Mizoram 318 km.
  • The aim of the project is to curb infiltration and smuggling of cattle and fake Indian currency notes.

NGT prohibited camping activity on Ganga within 100 meters

The National Green Tribunal has prohibited all camping activity on beaches along the Ganga which fall within 100 meters from the middle of the river during lean season flow from Shivpuri to Rishikesh, a hub for eco-tourism and river rafting.

Aadhaar mandatory for cooks, students in Mid-day meal scheme

Cook-cum-helpers working under the Midday meal scheme as well as the student beneficiaries will now be required to have an Aadhaar card to avail the facility with the HRD ministry mandating the same.

  • The move, aimed at improving efficiency and transparency, comes following a push from the Central government to link the Aadhaar number with subsidy schemes related to school education.

Bengal passes ‘historic’ Bill to rein in private hospitals

Aiming to overhaul private healthcare in the State and take stringent measures against health institutions accused of medical negligence and corrupt practices, the Legislative Assembly on Friday passed the West Bengal Clinical Establishments (Registration, Regulation and Transparency) Bill, 2017, by a voice vote.

Tripura to supply additional 60 MW to Bangladesh

Tripura would supply an additional 60 MW of electricity to Bangladesh, over the 100 MW of power the state is providing to that country

  • The 100 MW electricity being supplied to the neighbouring country since March 23, 2016, is in addition to the 500 MW Bangladesh is already receiving from West Bengal.

Kurukh script gets official language status in West Bengal

Kurukh, an endangered tribal language of the Dravidian family, is set to get a new lease of life in West Bengal. It is spoken by the Oraon tribal community.

WCCB’s Operation Thunderbird and Operation Save Kurma for fight against wildlife crime

Wildlife Crime Control Bureau (WCCB) has successfully coordinated Operation Thunder Bird from January 30 to February 19, 2017 in its fight to end poaching of India’s wildlife animals. It also had convened Operation Save Kurma, a species specific operation on turtles between 15 December 2016 and 30 January 2017.

Google India Inks MoU With Telangana Government

Google India and Telangana government have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) aimed at supporting the digitisation efforts of the state.

  • Google India will provide Google Cloud credits and access to all cloud platform products to eligible startups engaged with Telangana government’s T—Hub initiative.

Reliance Jio partners Cisco for the first-ever All-IP converged network in India

Reliance Jio has announced collaboration with networking giant Cisco to further expand Jio’s existing multi-terabit capacity with the first All-IP converged network in India.

  • With this network, Jio will offer a combination of high-speed data, mobile video, VoLTE, digital commerce, media, cloud and payment services, Cisco said in a statement.
  • It is the first network of its kind globally with the fastest growth to 100 million broadband and VoLTE customers, reaching the milestone within six months of launch.

Airtel to partner with Nokia for 5G and IoT applications

In a strategic move, Finnish mobile phone manufacturer Nokia and India’s largest telecom service provider Bharti Airtel have announced to create a strategic roadmap for network evolution to the 5G-technology standard and Internet of Things (IoT)-enabled devices.

  • Nokia and Airtel will build on 4G in terms of power, operations and cost effectiveness with the highest level of quality and reliability.

Facebook launches ‘SheLeadsTech’ for women founded startups in India

Facebook aims to help women in India get the right tools and support to achieve different occupations and businesses.

  • As four out of five women in India wish to become entrepreneurs, the country is missing out on a potential 15.5 million new businesses and 64 million additional jobs by not addressing the challenges facing such women, a new Facebook study said.
  • Ahead of the International Women’s Day that falls on March 8, Facebook also launched “SheLeadsTech”, a program that will give women-founded/co-founded start-ups access to a year-long program that provides tools, mentorship and resources to help overcome some of the barriers they face.
