NPAs at record high: PAC for naming and shaming defaulters

As NPAs of public sector banks soared to a staggering Rs 6.8 lakh crore, the chairman of a key Parliamentary panel has favoured naming and shaming corporate houses which default on repayment of bank loans.

  • Public Accounts Committee (PAC) chief K V Thomas hopes “naming and shaming” such corporate houses may help financial institutions get back their money.

India hoists tallest flag at Indo-Pak border

India’s tallest national flag, measuring 360 feet, was hoisted at the Attari-Wagah joint check post in Punjab. A 293-foot tall tricolour in Ranchi had held the record earlier. The flag in Punjab, built at a cost of Rs 3.6 crore, can be seen from Lahore in Pakistan. Though, Pakistan has objected to the installation of the flag.

India to lead world in smart phone adoption

India will lead the world in smart phone adoption with a net addition of 350 million connections in 2016-20.

Centre carries out 1st ever across-the-river survey to figure out aquatic life

The Centre is carrying out the first ever across-the-river survey in Ganga to determine the population of aquatic life, including that of the endangered Gangetic doplhin.

  • As per the the National Mission for Clean Ganga (NMCG), the survey will create a baseline scientific data to take suitable measures to improve quality of the river water.

Delhi government inaugurates three night shelters

Delhi Urban Development Minister Satyendar Jain inaugurated three night shelters for the city’s homeless in different parts of the national capital.

  • The night shelters, built by the Delhi Urban Shelter Improvement Board (DUSIB), are located at Ghazipur and Yamuna Pushta areas in east Delhi and Rohini Sector 22 in the north.

Vijayawada and Tirupati airports renamed

The Andhra Pradesh Cabinet has approved proposals to rename the Vijayawada Airport and the Tirupati Airport.

  • Vijayawada Airport in Gannavaram has been renamed as ‘Nandamuri Taraka Rama Rao-Amaravati Airport’ after the legendary actor and founder of the ruling Telugu Desam Party, and the new capital of Andhra Pradesh.
  • The Tirupati Airport has been renamed as ‘Sri Venkateswara Airport’ after Lord Venkateswara of the temple town.

Bhubaneswar to be fully Wi-Fi enabled by November 2018

The Odisha government has set a target to make Bhubaneswar completely Wi-Fi enabled by November 2018 as the state gears up to host the men’s Hockey World Cup-2018.

  • According to the decisions taken at a high-level meeting chaired by Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik, fibre optic network would be spread across the city and 1,800 Wi-Fi access points would be set up.

‘Tirtha Darshan’ scheme announced by Haryana govt

Haryana Assembly  announced  ‘Tirtha Darshan’ scheme, under which senior citizens of the state will be able to go on pilgrimage within the country on government expenses.

  • He said that under the scheme, the government would bear the entire cost of the tour of senior citizens belonging to the Below Poverty Line (BPL) families. The scheme is reserved for domiciles of Haryana.

Ola inks pact with MP govt to train 25,000 people

 Taxi-hailing app Ola has signed an agreement with the Madhya Pradesh government to impart training to about 25,000 people.

DMRC enters Limca Book of Records

The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has entered the Limca Book of World Records for erecting 200 U-shaped girders, the maximum to be launched on any metro corridor in the country within a month.

M P Veerendra Kumar received Moortidevi award

Eminent Malayalam author and journalist M P Veerendra Kumar was presented the 30th Moortidevi award by Bharatiya Jnanpith organisation.

  • Kumar was chosen for the prestigious award for his Malayalam travelogue ‘Hymavathabhoovil’, which dwells upon ancient trails of Indian culture, myth, literature and people strewn in the plains, valleys and mountains of India”.

China sets 2017 GDP growth target at around 6.5%

China has set its GDP growth target at around 6.5 per cent for 2017, compared with a target range of 6.5-7 per cent for 2016, according to a government work report available to the media.
