Sports Minister Vijay Goel addresses Global Millennium Summit at Dubai, UAE

The students of SRCC, University of Delhi in collaboration with IIM-Ahmedabad, have taken the first-of-its-kind initiative to organize an International Summit called ‘Global Millennium Summit 2017, at the hub of business and innovation, Dubai.

  • With the mission to provide a platform for future leaders of this millennium to engage with each other, ’The Global Millennium Summit’ envisages to commemorate ideas and celebrate greater diversity.
    The theme of the summit is ‘Future of this Millennium’.
  • Minister of State (I/C) for Youth Affairs and Sports Shri Vijay Goel attended the Global Millennium Summit, Dubai on 18 March 2017.

Firebrand BJP MP Yogi Adityanath is new UP CM

The BJP elected Gorakhpur Lok Sabha MP Yogi Adityanath, a firebrand Hindutva leader, as the new Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister in a meeting.

  • BJP also decided to reward two of its workers as it gave the post of Deputy Chief Ministers to Keshav Prasad Maurya and Dinesh Sharma.
  • This is for the first time that the state will have two deputy chief ministers.

Punjab announces reservation for women, dumps VIP culture

The new Punjab Cabinet in its maiden meeting announced reservation for women in jobs and urban and rural local bodies and an end to use of red beacons on official vehicles by the Chief Minister, ministers, legislators and officers.

  • There will also be no auction of land of farmers, who have availed of loans but have not paid back, by any bank, including cooperative ones.
  • Punjab is the first state to give 33 per cent reservation for women in jobs, including contractual appointments, and 50 per cent reservation to them in Panchayati Raj institutions and urban local bodies

1st Haryana Sahitya Sangam Organised at Panchkula, Haryana

The first Haryana Sahitya Sangam begins at Indradhanush Auditorium, Panchkula. The 3 day long event will feature plays, Books Exhibition and cultural programmes.

  • The Haryana Sahitya Sangam will bring writers and scholars belonging to Hindi, Sanskrit, Urdu, Punjabi and other languages together on a single platform. A picture exhibition on “Yugo Yugo se Haryana” is also been organized in the Sahitya Sangam.

Arunachal teen develops goggles to help the blind

A high school student in Arunachal Pradesh named Anang Tadar has invented a unique pair of goggles that uses ultrasound and infrared sensors to help the visually impaired detect obstacles on their path.

  • The State government pledged financial support for him to develop the gadget.
  • He has been awarded with the Dinanath Pandey Smart Idea Innovation Award for inventing a gadget called Goggle for Blind (G4B).

ICRISAT, ICAR join hands for crop improvement

In a bid to benefit small farmers in India and globally, Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) and the International Crops Research Institute for the Semi-Arid Tropics (ICRISAT) would work together on crop improvement and agronomy programmes for grain legumes and dryland cereals.


Shahid Afridi appointed ambassador of Blind Cricket WC

Former Pakistan all-rounder Shahid Afridi has been appointed as the ambassador for the fifth edition of the Blind Cricket World Cup.

  • 37-year-old Afridi had last month announced his retirement from international cricket, bringing to an end his illustrious 21-year career.
  • The fifth edition of the tournament, to be played in ODI format, will be hosted by Pakistan Blind Cricket Council (PBCC) in the United Arab Emirates and Pakistan in January 2018.

China to host major world badminton events in 2018, 2019

World Badminton Federation (BWF) Council Members made the decision following six bid presentations for four major events in 2018 and 2019.

  • The BWF announced that the Chinese city of Nanjing was awarded the right to host BWF World Championships 2018, while another Chinese city Nanning was selected to stage the BWF Sudirman Cup 2019.
  • Bangkok became the first Thai city to host a BWF major event as it was named to host next year’s BWF Thomas & Uber Cup Finals.
  • The Swiss city of Basel will host the BWF World Championships 2019.

Racer Ashwin Sundar charred to death in car accident            

National car racing champion Ashwin Sundar and his wife Nivedhita were charred to death after their car rammed a tree in Chennai.
