जिन व्यक्तियों ने आधुनिक भारत में औद्योगिक विकास का सूत्रपात किया, उनमें जमशेद जी टाटा का स्थान महत्वपूर्ण है. जमशेद जी टाटा का जन्म 3 मार्च, 1839 में गुजरात के एक पारसी परिवार में हुआ था. इनके पिता का नाम नसरवान टाटा था. उन दिनों देश में अंग्रेजों का शासन था. 13 वर्ष की अवस्था में इनके पिता इन्हें बम्बई ले आए. वहीं पर इन्होंने अपनी शिक्षा-दीक्षा प्राप्त की. यहीं पर इनका विवाह हीराबाई नामक कन्या से हो गया. वहीं पर इन्होंने एक वकील के यहाँ नौकरी कर ली. बाद में वह नौकरी छोड़कर अपने पिता के व्यवसाय में हाथ बंटाने लगे. व्यवसाय के प्रति उनकी लगन तथा कर्मठता को देखकर उनके पिता की खुशी का ठिकाना नहीं रहा. उन्होंने व्यवसाय के संबंध में जमशेद को चीन भेजा. वहां हांगकांग तथा शंघाई में अपने व्यापार की शाखाएं खोलीं. 25 वर्ष की अवस्था में यह लंदन पहुँचे. वहाँ वह अपनी कंपनी की शाखाएँ खोलने के लिए भेजे गए थे. वहीं से उन्होंने लंकाशायर और मैनचेस्टर की यात्राएं की. ये दोनों स्थान सूती वस्त्र उद्योग के लिए प्रसिद्ध थे. वहीं पर उन्होंने कारलाइल का भाषण सुना. उसने कहा-जिस देश का लोहे पर नियंत्रण हो जाता है. उनका शीघ्र ही सोने पर भी नियंत्रण हो जाता है. टाटा के मन में यह बात अच्छी तरह बैठ गई. उन्होंने सूती वस्त्र उद्योग और लोह उद्योग की योजनाएं बनाईं. जमशेद जी टाटा भारत में सूती वस्त्रोद्योग के जन्मदाता माने जाते हैं. भारत में उस समय मोटे कपड़े बनाए जाते थे. वह उच्च कोटि का कपड़ा बनाना चाहते थे. इस उद्देश्य से वह पुनः इंग्लैण्ड गए वहाँ कपास की सफाई तथा कताई-बुनाई का कार्य देखा. कपास तथा कपड़े के मूल्य में जमीन आसमान का अंतर था. कपास भारत से सस्ते दाम पर बाहर भेजी जाती थी. यह देखकर उन्हें बड़ा कष्ट हुआ. उन्होंने सोचा कि भारत की कपास से भारत में ही कपड़ा निश्चय ही सस्ता पडे़गा. उन्होंने नागपुर में कपड़े की मिल लगाई. टाटा ने अपनी दूरदर्शिता का परिचय दिया. उन्होंने कच्चे माल की सुलभता, बाजार की निकटता तथा कोयला तथा पानी की सुलभता की दृष्टि से नागपुर का चयन किया था. प्रारंभ में इनके समक्ष अनेक कठिनाइयाँ आईं पर वे घबराए नहीं. टाटा जी उद्योग के क्षेत्र में स्वेदेशी आंदोलन के सूत्रधार थे. इसके मूल में उनकी स्वदेशी वस्तुओं के उद्योग की भावना भी काम कर रही थी. जमशेद जी बड़े उदार तथा दानशील व्यक्ति थे. उन्होंने मंदिरों, मस्जिदों, धर्मशालाओं के लिए ट्रस्ट की स्थापना की. कारखानों के मजदूरों के लिए उनके मन में अपार स्नेह था. उन्होंने उनके लिए क्वार्टर, विद्यालाय, पुस्तकालय एवं चिकित्सालय की स्थापना की.

note: he is not adding any extra cloth frm 100 mtr he is expanding to 110 so original will always 100
now he has expanded to 10 mtrs extra and 1m = 1re so 10 m=10 rs so it will add with the actual cost price..:)
