  3. Teaching has long been considered to be a “noble” profession. They shape the future of our progeny. But the path towards becoming a professor is hard and time consuming. In the US, they chase the mirage of becoming a “tenured” professor – a process that lasts up to a decade if one is lucky. “Publish or perish” keeps them doing research and writing papers that no one may read or use. _________________________
    Tenure grants them freedom. According to Quora, “In IITs, an Assistant Professor applicant is expected to have 3 years of Post-Doctoral experience (Yes, they should have a PhD degree). Although an assistant Professor is eligible for becoming “Tenure”d professor after 3-year experience, the common practice for granting the tenure is after 5 years.” Besides job security, it lets professors take sabbaticals. That is what is now at risk.

    A) They have to keep publishing papers in journals just to keep their foot in the door.
    B) For cash strapped colleges, tenure is granted on the basis of the professor’s ability to get research grants from corporates.
    C) Critics argue that while funds for tenured professors come from tuition fees, very few tenured professors actually teach.

    Along with scientists of the Seti (Search for Extra-Terrestrial Intelligence) Institute, flying saucer lovers believe we aren’t alone in the universe.

    Finally, they have truckloads of declassified Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) documents with which to face the naysayers.

    One such report documents a UFO spotted by two police officers patrolling the Lithuanian border on June 26, 1996.

    The crucial difference between the two groups is that the latter believe that aliens have been visiting us regularly — some actually having ‘met’ the visitors — while the scientists don’t accept the UFO argument even with barrels of salt.

    What a way to begin the year for unidentified flying object (UFO) enthusiasts.

  5. Working on a long-term photo project is a privilege. You meet some incredible people and develop a level of intimacy with them that’s just not possible on a news assignment or even a feature. I’ve been going up to Kashmir from my New Delhi base to work on this project for more than a year.
    My editor and I wanted to find a project that would cover the story of Kashmir — a former Himalayan princely state that was split between India and Pakistan at Partition and which both countries now claim — in a different way, and eventually we came up with the idea of looking at mental health treatment. After decades of unrest, it was a very interesting angle to me — how coping with such a reality was taking an emotional toll. ________________________________

    A) It’s diminished since, but the valley remains tense and unrest still flares up, affecting people across the region.
    B) Initially I thought it would have a female angle because the situation in the Kashmir Valley has created a generation of widows, or mothers who have lost sons. But it became bigger than that.

    C) So I started looking at why the Kashmir Valley in particular has such high levels of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and depression, and how that was approached and treated.

  7. Southern India is facing a major calamity. All major states have been hit by a severe shortage in rainfall that can ensure a severe drought. While some states like Kerala and Tamil Nadu has already officially declared an official drought in the entire state Karnataka has declared more than half the state as drought hit. The shortage of water is likely to be so large that it could soon accelerate into a major crisis. However, this is no sudden development. ________________________________
    According to the official figures released by the IMD southwest monsoons was below normal in six of the nine meteorological sub divisions across seven southern states and union territories. Kerala and Karnataka, which receives most of their rainfall from the south west monsoons had the highest deficiency.

    A) While the shortfall in Kerala was as high as 34% the shortage in the three sub divisions of Karnataka varied.
    B) The early signs were very evident even after the South West monsoons last year.
    C) The scenario in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry was also bad as south west monsoon rainfall was 19% short of the normal.

    1. B) The early signs were very evident even after the South West monsoons last year.

  8. Non-banking finance companies (NBFCs) represent an important linkage between the formal banking sector and informal segments of the real economy in India (wage labourers, smallholder farmers, unorganised retail, and domestic workers) through the channelling of credit from the former to the latter.
    They have a significant presence in the microfinance, small business finance and commercial vehicles finance segments. Of the 11,682 NBFCs registered with the Reserve Bank of India as of end-March 2016, 209 were systemically important non-deposittaking NBFCs which are subject to more stringent prudential norms and provisioning requirements. _____________________Through the data lens of collection efficiencies and disbursement volumes of over 100 NBFCs, we take stock of the impact of demonetisation on them. This also provides insights on the ultimate impact on the informal economy in India.

    A) Given the lack of access to bank accounts, most NBFCs accept repayments in cash from their customers.
    B) Loans & advances by these entities alone accounted for around Rs 10.7 lakh crore.
    C) Many microfinance NBFCs had put disbursements on hold for all of November 2016 and are now restarting disbursements gradually.

    1. B) Loans & advances by these entities alone accounted for around Rs 10.7 lakh crore.

  9. It is indeed welcome that the Centre and the states have reached agreement on the vexed issue of dual control of administering the goods and services tax (GST), opening up the possibility of introducing the new, paradigm-shifting tax regime on July 1 this year. A more realistic view would be to set the launch date of the new tax three months after the final state and central GST laws are passed and the rules published. ____________________________
    For GST to succeed, compliance must be easy. Taxpayers must not face undue harassment having to deal with two administrative bureaucracies for the same tax. States will oversee administration — or undertake scrutiny and audit — of 90 per cent of economic entities with a turnover underRs 1.5 crore, with the remaining 10 per cent under the Centre’s purview.

    A) Companies need time to prepare their accounting systems in order to draw up an invoice that fully conforms to the requirements of the new tax on launch day.
    B) States will also be empowered to share control equally under the Integrated GST. And, there should be no inspector raj.
    C) Political rapprochement makes sense as GST creates audit trails that would curb evasion, widen the tax base and boost tax collections.

  16. The most recent update of the World Economic Outlook brought out by the International Monetary Fund yesterday cautions of growing downside risks in emerging and developing market economies even as it ups the growth forecasts of advanced economies.
    What is surprising is that the IMF has revised up growth numbers in more than half a dozen advanced economies where growth will now pick up from 1.6% in 2016 to 1.9% in 2017 and further to 2% in 2018. The highest revision has been for the United States where growth will surge from 1.6% to 2.3% and further to 2.5% during these years. This is despite the growing uncertainties in US policies after the changeover in government.

    A) However, the scenario in the emerging market and developing economies is not so buoyant. In fact the trends are more disparate.

    B) However, this is a temporary setback and India growth in 2017 and 2018 will be ahead that of China with the two sets of numbers being 7.2% and 7.7% and 6.5% and 6% respectively.

    C) However, despite these changing equations global growth is expected to pick up as forecast earlier from 3.1% in 2016 to 3.4% in 2017 and further to 3.6% in 2018.

            (21+7+26+16)/2= 70/2= 35-1= 34
            (14+28+15+27)/2 =84/2= 42-1= 41
            now (119+90+140+91)/2 =440/2= 220-1= 219

    1. M@st@n!

      57 is the ans 😀

    2. M@st@n!

      square all the 4 no den add all square no divide by 2
      3sq=9, 5=25, 2=4, 4=16
      9+25+16+4 = 54/2 = 27

      6=36, 2=4, 3=9, 5=25
      36+4+9+25 = 74/2 = 37

      2=4, 2=4, 9=81, 5=25
      4+4+81+25 = 114/2 = 57

  54. Hello! This is kind of off topic but I need some advice from an established blog.

    Is it tough to set up your own blog? I’m not very techincal but I can figure things out pretty fast.
    I’m thinking about making my own but I’m not sure where to start.
    Do you have any tips or suggestions? Thank you
