Eight Friends — Romil, Rakesh, Mukesh, Rohit, Rahul, Anupam, Neeraj and Anil — are seated around a circular table, but not necessarily in the same order. Four of them are facing the centre and the others are facing outward. They belong to eight different cities — Bhopal, Patna, Kolkata, Delhi, Gwalior, Ranchi, Chennai and Rajkot but not necessarily in the same order. Anupam faces the centre and sits third to the right of Rakesh. Rohit belongs to Kolkata and faces the person who belongs to Ranchi. Neeraj sits third to the right of Mukesh, who lives in Bhopal. The persons who belong to Delhi and Gwalior are facing the same direction (inward or outward). Rahul is sitting between the person who belongs to Kolkata and the one from Rajkot respectively. Romil belongs to Gwalior and Rakesh belongs to Patna. The person who belongs to Chennai is facing outward and is the immediate neighbour of the person who belongs to Rajkot. Anil is the immediate neighbour of the ones who belong to Gwalior and Chennai. Rahul is on the immediate left of Rohit. Anil sits third to the right of Rahul.

Khap panchayats are extra-constitutional bodies in Haryana that decry (A) /decree(B) institutionalised atrocities.

The Khap leaders are universally criticised for imposing regressive diktats that fetter (A)/curb(B) women.

Patriarchal and misogynist, Khaps have played a key role in reducing Haryana’s sex ratio to an immeasurable (A)/abysmal (B) low.

The recent apex court directive against Khap panchayats holds the district administration including the police accountable for the prevention of the barbaric acts carried out at the behest(A)/recommendation(B) of the Khaps.

    3. GujjU PoOH_N!T

Sentence 1- Khap panchayats are extra-constitutional bodies in Haryana that decry (A) /decree(B) institutionalised atrocities.

“Decry” means to condemn or speak disparagingly of

“Decree” means to command or ordain

Either of the words might be the right choice to fit in this sentence. We need to read the rest of the sentences to understand the context.

Sentence 2- The Khap leaders are universally criticised for imposing regressive diktats that fetter (A)/curb(B) women.

The passage is talking of Khap panchayats “imposing regressive diktats”. So the correct word for sentence 1 is decree, not decry.

Now for the correct word to choose in sentence 2:

“Fetter” means to confine or restrain. “Curb” also means something similar, to restrain or check. But considering the object in question, women, “fetter women” makes better sense than “curb women”.

Sentence 3 – Patriarchal and misogynist, Khaps have played a key role in reducing Haryana’s sex ratio to an immeasurable (A)/abysmal (B) low.

“Immeasurable” means incapable of being measured.

“Abysmal” means very deep or great.

The right choice here is abysmal. Haryana’s sex ratio has been reduced to a great low.

Sentence 4- The recent apex court directive against Khap panchayats holds the district administration including the police accountable for the prevention of the barbaric acts carried out at the behest(A)/recommendation(B) of the Khaps.

“Behest” means command or directive. It makes better sense here than “recommendation”, which is a weak substitute.

Replace ‘ARE TRYING’ by ‘HAVE BEEN TRYING’ in part ‘B’.
With FOR/SINCE for time we use perfect tenses. As the action is continuing still, the present perfect tense is required here. Though FOR can be used with the past simple tense also, FOR in this use denotes a terminated period of time; e.g.

We lived here for five years. (but don’t live here now)

RAISE = to lift something to a higher position; e.g.

      a) Would all those in favour please raise their hands?
      b) He raised the window and leaned out.
      c) She raised her gun, took aim and fired.

ROSE is the second form of RISE. RISE is an intransitive verb. RISE = to move upwards; e.g.

      a) The balloon rose gently (up) into the air.
      b) At 6 a.m. we watched the sun rise (= appear and move upwards in the sky).
