1. Subaltern (adjective) – Of lower status.

Synonyms: Inferior, Subordinate, Underling, Lowly, Ancillary

Antonyms: Superior, Uppermost, Leading, Paramount, Zenith

Usage: The sergeant gave his subaltern a sarcastic look.

2. Scuttle (verb) – To abandon, withdraw from, or cause to be abandoned or destroyed.

Synonyms: Scupper, Demolish, Eradicate, Extirpate, Wipe Out

Antonyms: Formulate, Construct, Preserve, Fabricate

Usage: There is little doubt that his Nazi ties scuttled his career while he was alive and sullied his reputation after his death.

4Exasperation (noun) – A feeling of intense irritation or annoyance.

Synonyms: Irritation, Annoyance, Chagrin, Vexation, Anger, Fury, Rage, Wrath, aggravation

Antonyms: Pleasure, Delight, Contentment, Gratification

Usage: Because Nidhi has been in the doctor’s waiting room for two hours, she is upset and in a state of exasperation

5. Swoon (verb) – Lose consciousness from extreme emotion.

Synonyms: Succumb, Unconsciousness, Trance, Oblivion

Antonyms: Consciousness, Alertness, Presence, Cognizance

Usage: Sharon felt like she was going to swoon upon hearing the news that her fiance no longer wished to marry her.

6. Churlish (adjective) – Lack of civility or graciousness.

Synonyms: Rude, Ill-mannered, Discourteous, Impolite, Ungracious, Unmannerly, Uncivil, Boorish

Antonyms: Polite, Pleasant, Courteous, Benignant, Gracious

Usage: According to the latest memo, the new manager is not going to put up with the churlish employee attitudes that have driven customers away.

7. Fervor (noun) – Intensity of feeling or expression.

Synonyms: Passion, Ardour, Intensity, Zeal, Vehemence, Avidity, Fervid

Antonyms: Apathy, Indifference, Agony, Lethargy, Insouciance

Usage: The terrorist’s fervor made him believe that giving his life for his cause was his purpose in life.

8. Heckle (verb) – To interrupt a speaker with insulting or rude comments

Synonyms: Bait, Provoke, Hector, Harass, Tease, Pester, Gibe, Jeer

Antonyms: Admire, Compliment, Commend, Applause

Usage: Several protesters were heckling the speaker at the rally.

9. Thwart (verb) – To hinder or stop something from happening.

Synonyms: Baffle, Foil, Block, Hamper, Restrain, Neutralize

Antonyms: Untwist, Assist, Connive, Pander, Encourage, Embolden

Usage: In order to thwart the advancing enemy troops, the captain ordered the explosives team to destroy the bridge.

10. Promiscuous (adjective) – Consisting of a wide range of different things.

Synonyms: Assorted, Eclectic, Heterogeneous, Miscellaneous, Mixed, Motley

Antonyms: Homogeneous, Monolithic, Uniform, Alike, Identical
