1. Sarcasm: (noun) – A biting remark spoken to convey the opposite meaning ; an act or expression usually intended to hurt another’s feelings.

  • Synonyms: Attack, Criticism, Insult, Outrage, Harshness
  • Antonyms: Accolade, Commendation, Compliment, Acclaim, Applause, Praise
  • Usage: Since I dislike my mother, I usually reply with sarcasm when people ask me about her.

2. Sentinel: (noun) – One whose job is to keep watch and protect.

  • Synonyms: Custodian, Guard, Guardian, Keeper, Protector, Observer, Watchman
  • Antonyms: Attacker, Enemy, Intruder, Assaulter
  • Usage: At my house, my German Shepherd is the sentinel who keeps anyone from coming inside without permission.

3. Loath: (adjective) – Reluctant ; slow to begin or proceed because of doubts or uncertainty.

  • Synonyms: Unwilling, Reluctant, Indisposed, Disinclined, Averse, Hesitant
  • Antonyms: Willing, Eager, Determined, Keen, Inclined
  • Usage: I was loath to accept his claim of having climbed Mount Everest.

4. Horde: (noun) – A great number of persons or creatures massed together.

  • Synonyms: Army, Crowd, Group, Assembly, Flock, Collection, Mass, Cluster
  • Antonyms: Few, Little, Portion, Piece
  • Usage: Two bodyguards helped the celebrity walk through a horde of fans.

5. Sonorous: (adjective) – Able to produce a deep sound ; marked by a high volume of sound.

  • Synonyms: Resonant , Loud, Booming, Noisy, Clangorous, Piercing
  • Antonyms: Soft, Low, Quiet, Tinny
  • Usage: When the doctors heard the patient’s sonorous breathing, they knew he needed oxygen immediately.

6. Bushel: (noun) – A measure of capacity equal to 8 gallons, used for dry goods ; a considerable amount.

  • Synonyms: Abundance, Bunch, Plenty, Hundreds, Loads, Lot
  • Antonyms: Atom, Crumb, Fragment, Particle, Granule
  • Usage: Once the small gardener harvested his grains, he produced a bushel of wheat.

7. Tarry: (verb) – To move or act slowly; to take your time or delay in doing something.

  • Synonyms: Dawdle, Delay, Rest, Slow, Drag, Lag, Creep
  • Antonyms: Finish, Hasten, Hurry, Proceed, Quick, Complete
  • Usage: If you tarry while doing your work it will simply take even longer, so it is best to just get it over with and not wait.

8. Strife: (noun) – Angry or bitter disagreement over fundamental issues; a lack of agreement or harmony.

  • Synonyms: Conflict, Disagreement, Argument , Discord, Disharmony, Dispute , Enemity
  • Antonyms: Peace, Harmony, Cooperation, Accord, Alliance
  • Usage: If the two countries do not put their strife to rest, they will cause the deaths of thousands of citizens.

9. Fray: (verb) – A physical dispute between opposing individuals or groups.

  • Synonyms: Battle, Fight, Struggle, Ruckus, Dispute, Clash
  • Antonyms: Harmony, Agreement, Cooperate, Calm
  • Usage: As this year’s election heats up, more and more politicians are being drawn into the fray.

10. Levy: (verb) – To impose (a tax or fine).

  • Synonyms: Impose, Charge, Duty, Imposition Tax, Toll, Excise, Fine
  • Antonyms: Veto, Give, Compensate
  • Usage: All countries that I am aware of maintain that the government has a right to levy taxes on its citizens.
