  1. Evanesce (verb) – to vanish slowly

    • Synonyms: evaporate, disappear, fade, vanish, dissipate 
    • Antonyms:  materialize
    • Usage: Later in the morning the fog will evanesce and reveal blue skies.
  2. Appellation (noun) – a term or title by which a person or thing is identified.

    • Synonyms: name, title, designation, denomination, honorific, tag
    • Usage: Because there is no appellation on the product, consumers are confused about the brand’s name.
  3. Spar (noun) – to fight with the exchange of physical or verbal blows

    • Synonyms: fight, contend, wrangle, squabble, clash

  4. Atrocious (adjective) – heinous; monstrous
    • Synonyms: brutal, barbaric, wicked, ruthless, savage, vicious

  5. Sneer (noun) – to speak or smile in an unkind way
    • Synonyms: jeer, ridicule, scorn, taunt, deride
    • Antonyms: praise
    • Usage: There is no way you will get the job if you sit at the interview with a sneer on your face.
  6. Redress (verb) – to make something right or the payment for a wrong

    • Synonyms: rectify, correct, amend, remedy, repair, fix, cure
    • Antonyms:  wrong, blighted
    • Usage: The company hopes to redress the victim’s injury by paying out a million dollar settlement.
  7. Shirk (verb) – avoid or neglect (a duty or responsibility).

    • Synonyms: evade, dodge, avoid, skip, slack, shun
    • Antonyms:  confront, scrutinize
    • Usage: The man tried to shirk his duties by pretending to be ill.
  8. Concomitant (adjective) – happening at the same time as something else

    • Synonyms: attendant, accompanying, associated, collateral, related
    • Antonyms: unrelated
    • Usage: She loved travel, with all its concomitant worries
  9. Leery (adjective) – suspicious or guarded

    • Synonyms: wary, suspicious, mistrustful, cautious
    • Antonyms: naive, certain, sure
    • Usage: Voters are leery of politicians who promise to change the world overnight
  10. Portend (verb) – to indicate or give sign of a future occurrence

    • Synonyms: presageaugurforeshadowforetellprophesy
    • Antonyms: Oblivious 
    • Usage: The cameras and reporters portend the arrival of the popular singer.
