      Has had = past perfect tense, so the proceeding sentence must be in past simple. Hence existed..

    Q.9. Option A “As it is widely known today” seems feasible. Why E?

      As is – depicts or describes something as it is.

      As it is – is quite informal (like the situation can be widely known or not , but for the sake of a piece of information, it is said.
