  7. A) Neither of us were proficient at using a saw and we’d managed only two rungs when exhaustion caught up with us and the light faded for permanently.

    Only A
    Only B
    Only C
    Both B and C
    None of these
    Option C
Sentence A is incorrect because ‘neither of’ is always followed by a plural noun or pronoun and a singular verb. In the given sentence, it is followed by a plural verb ‘were’ which is incorrect. Therefore, it must be substituted by a singular verb i.e. ‘was’.
The sentence B is incorrect because ‘did’ is never followed by the past tense of the verb. It is always followed by the present tense of the verb. Therefore, ‘found’ should be replaced by ‘find’.
The sentence C maintains parallelism, hence, making it the grammatically correct sentence.

  8. A) The story was corroborated by defence witnesses, but he was found guilty and sentenced to death.
    B) Brandon was fortunate to have been raised by two people who cared as much about one another as they cared for him.

    Only A
    Only B
    Only C
    Both A and B
    None of these
    Option A
Sentence B is incorrect because the sentence talks about two people and the phrase ‘one another’ is used for more number of people. The correct replacement should be ‘each other’, since it is used to refer to two people.

Sentence C is incorrect because the preposition ‘into’ shouldn’t be used after investigated, for one always ‘investigates something’ and never ‘investigates into’ something.

Sentence A is in passive voice and is grammatically correct. ‘Corroborate’ means ‘to confirm or give support to (a statement, theory, or finding)’.

  9. A) He listened, refraining from a reply, and involuntarily wondered how this old man, living alone in the country for so many years, could know and discuss about so minutely and acutely all the recent European military and political events.

    Only C
    Only A and B
    Only B
    All A,B and C
    None of these
    Option A
Sentence A is incorrect because of the verb ‘were’. If connectives/appositives like along with, together with, as well as, accompanied by etc. are used to combine two subjects, the verb agrees with the subject mentioned first. Therefore, ‘were’ must be replaced with ‘was’ since the subject is singular i.e. ‘Jack’.
Sentence B is incorrect because when the subjects are joined by ‘either or’ or ‘neither nor’ are of different persons, the verb will agree in person and number with the noun nearest to it. In the given sentence, the subject nearest to the verb is ‘salesman’ which is singular. Therefore, the verb ‘are’ must be replaced with ‘is’ to make the sentence grammatically correct.

  11. A) We decided to discontinue the event because people began to leave early.
    B) The threshold value of the stimuli adequate for the various senses may be extraordinarily lowered.
    C) The two countries met at the conference to iron in their differences.
    Both A and C
    Only C
    Only B
    Both A and B
    None of these
    Option D
The sentence ‘C’ is incorrect because of the wrong usage of the phrase ‘iron in’. The correct phrase is ‘iron out’ which means ‘to resolve by discussion, eliminate differences’. The sentence implies that the two countries met at the conference to resolve their differences by discussion.
