One of the things I find truly admirable in a person is the ability to speak less than one knows. I have a deep respect for communicators, whether they be writers or speakers or teachers, who can ___1___ their wealth of knowledge into simple, absorbable portions. I admire these kinds of people not only because they ___2___ an element of surprise (“He knows even more than I thought he did!”), but also because in them I see marks of modesty, self-control, patience and ___3___. In the absence of these virtues, knowledge can be ___4___ to a person.
Some people are far too filled with knowledge for their own good. They do know a lot—that is for sure. Nobody can deny that. But people around them cannot help but ___5___ that they are just a little bit too ___6___ or preachy. The kind of person you are scared to compliment, lest you puff him up or inadvertently encourage him to talk even more. A common characteristic of this kind of person is that he is easily irritated by ignorance and restlessly eager to share everything he knows (not necessarily with bad intentions, however) to the ___7___ that it can get overwhelming. This has been called the curse of knowledge. You would think that a person with that ___8___ knowledge would have the wisdom to take things a little slower and feed things to you in a digestible ___9___. But as Steven Pinker writes in his book The Sense of Style, “The better you know something, the less you remember about how hard it was to learn. The ___10___ of knowledge is the single best explanation I know of why good people write bad prose.”
