English: Theme Detection Questions Set 6

Directions (1-10): In each questions below, a Theme has been given followed by two passage. You have to determine which passage is based on the given theme and mark it as your option. More than one passage can be based or not based on the given theme that is highlighted in bold.

  1. Bullet for Bullet: Is it a Right policy?
    a. Bullet for bullet depends on the situation. If we were suffered because of them, there is no use by suffering them by doing the same mistake which they have done. But, if we or the society have a threat from them, then Bullet for bullet is the best policy. Otherwise just forgive them, and live your own life. Life is too short to be serious.
    b. Some people are doing crimes in order to survive or may be because of bad influence. Ex :- Poor people, Juveniles etc. In that case, we should not kill them. Instead we should educate them about what is good and what is bad.

  2. Eastern vs Western- which parenting style is better?
    a. ‘There is no school equal to a decent home and no teacher equal to a virtuous parent’ – Gandhi. Kids are molded by how parents treat their kids, and the parenting style. Parenting style refers to the ways of raising kids which affects their academic achievement, self-confidence, aggression, psychological strength, and capacity to cope with real-life challenges. There has always been debate about the seemingly opposite parenting styles seen in the eastern and western households. Eastern style is seen to be more authoritarian, strict and demanding as opposed to the western style which seems lenient and permissive.
    b. The culture of permissive parenting helps kids grow up with the ability to think creatively and be innovative. The entrepreneurial attitude in western countries has been a product of this parenting style. Most of the Fortune Global 500 companies are from western countries.

  3. Has Reliance jio changed the telecom sector of India?
    a. the launch of Reliance Jio is not only about the telecom sector and its competition. But another perspective that can be looked into is that it has ensured that all telecom operators are on its toes. For many years, telecom industry has been giving the same services and have stabilized their prices. The sudden launch of Jio service has ensured more competition in the segment. Ultimately this would only benefit the Indian consumer. It would help increase penetration of telecom to the remotest areas and would help for a digital India.
    b. Launched in 2016, Reliance Jio started offering free services for customer acquisition. This has definitely been a move to capture maximum market in India and increase competition. However, telecom players like Idea, Vodafone, Airtel etc feel that this has given them an unfair advantage and has disrupted the market completely. Prices have declined tremendously, which can spoil the profits and the market. However, another school of thought promotes that increase in competition would help improve services, benefit the customers and eventually help increase telecom penetration in India.

  4. How successful is Modi’s Mann Ki Baat campaign?
    a. Mann Ki Baat became the most important source of revenue for All India Radio with a 10-second ad slot for Mann Ki Baat costing ₹ 200,000 as opposed to the usual ₹500- 1500. A survey conducted in 6 Indian cities including Mumbai and Chennai to estimate the show’s success showed that 66.7% of the population had listened to the Prime Minister’s address. From its genesis on 3 October 2014, Mann ki Baat by PM Modi has been broadcasted every month. So far, there have been 10 such podcasts of varying lengths between 10-30 minutes.
    b. Every month, people tune into Mann ki baat. It is very inspiring for everyone in the country. PM Modi addresses like a family elder. He creates confidence among the people. It makes the people remember their duties. The programme has been well received by the target audience, especially the urban masses residing in metropolitan cities across the country. A survey conducted in the lines of estimating the show’s success, in 6 Indian cities including Mumbai and Chennai, has indicated that some 66.7% of the population had tuned in to listen to the Prime Minister’s address and had found it useful.

  6. Startup India Standup India : Success or Failure?
    a. On January 16, Prime Minister Narendra Modi unveiled a 19-point action plan for start-up enterprises in India. He also announced a self-certification scheme related to nine labour and environment laws. He also said that there would be no inspection of the enterprises during the first three years of the launch.
    b. The government will develop a fund with an initial corpus of Rs 2,500 crore and a total corpus of Rs 10,000 crore over four years, to support upcoming start-up enterprises. The Life Insurance Corporation of India will play a major role in developing this corpus. A committee of private professionals selected from the start-up industry will manage the fund.

  9. Should India accept Rohingya refugees?
    a. Refugees are the most vulnerable section, they can be easily exploited, threatened and forced into activities that they may not willing to do. They need food, shelter, protection, healthcare, education, counselling, training, jobs and slow integration. India is itself a developing country and acc. To UNDP India has 51% people living in Multi-Dimensional poverty, couldn’t have the sources to guarantee all of that.
    b. India has been criticized for showing lack of interest in Rohingya issue and just focusing on economic interest. The Indian government was also planning to deport back 40000 illegal Rohingyas living in India. The concern was that these illegal migrants might get influenced by the terrorist organization, but except a case of theft reported in Jaipur in which a Rohingya was convicted no other police case has been registered against Rohingyas in India.

  10. Is ‘Make in India’ a success?
    a. The complete frameworks, in theory, is in full harmony and pretty sound. The revenue from taxes would be pushed into improving infrastructure. It would be an evolving cycle. After each round, you identify hurdles and improve.     b. The pick-up in investments is starting to show in the country’s industrial production numbers. Official data show India’s industrial production rose an average 2.7% year-over-year in the seven month period from October to May. Nothing spectacular one may say. But it is a significant step up from the measly 0.6% increase during the comparable period a year earlier.
