1. Antiquated – old-fashioned or outdated.

Synonyms: outdated, out of date, outmoded, behind the times, old-fashioned, archaic, anachronistic, superannuated.

Antonyms: current, modern, new, young, forward-looking

Sentence Usage: India will plan to amend its antiquated labour laws.

2. Extrapolate – estimate or conclude (something)

Synonyms: deduce, hypothesize, anticipate, assume, conclude, envision, figure, foresee, foretell, guess, predict

Antonyms: doubt

Sentence Usage: It is easy for Mr. Trump’s supporters to extrapolate from the situation.

3. Scaremonger – a person who spreads frightening or ominous reports or rumours.

Synonyms: pessimist, Cassandra, Chicken Littlestar, alarmist

Sentence Usage: The climate scaremongers are likely to be wrong.

4. Atrophy – gradually decline in effectiveness

Synonyms: degeneration, decline, degeneracy, deterioration, diminution.

Antonyms: ascent, betterment, development, improvement, increase

Sentence Usage: The imagination can atrophy from lack of use

5. Diminutive – extremely or unusually small.

Synonyms: tiny, small, little, petite, minute, miniature, mini, minuscule, microscopic, nanoscopic, small-scale, compact, pocket

Antonyms: big, enormous, giant, huge, immense, large, tall

Sentence Usage: Mr. Gao, a diminutive man with a booming voice, remembers how different it used to be.

6. Outrageous – very bold and unusual and rather shocking.

Synonyms:  eye-catching, startling, striking, flamboyant, showy, flashy, shocking, disgraceful, scandalous

Antonyms: clean, gentle, mild, moral, acceptable, delightful, good

Sentence Usage: The following five editorials are merely “outrageous,” in the sense they got a great many folks riled up or shocked

7. Ostensibly – as appears or is stated to be true, though not necessarily so; apparently.

Synonyms: apparently, seemingly, on the face of it, to all appearances, on the surface, to all intents and purposes, outwardly.

Antonyms: improbably, obscurely, unlikely

Sentence usage: His ostensibly telephone talk with Pak PM Nawaz Sharif is of little relevance.

8. Rhetoric – the art of effective or persuasive speaking or writing, especially the exploitation of figures of speech and other compositional techniques.

Synonyms: oratory, eloquence, power of speech, command of language, expression, way with words.

Antonyms: quiet, conciseness

Sentence Usage: Donald Trump’s rhetoric leaves Indian students unsure about pursuing higher education in US

9. Untrammelled – not deprived of freedom of action or expression; not restricted or hampered.

Synonyms: unlimited, unrestricted, endless, free, independent, self-sufficient.

Antonyms: limited

Sentence Usage: CCI can’t have untrammeled and uncontrolled discretion.

10. Retaliatory – To do something in response to an action done to oneself or an associate, especially to attack or injure someone as a response to a hurtful action.

Synonyms: payback, reprisal, requital, revenge, retribution

Antonyms: clemency, grace, leniency, lenity, mercy; forgiveness, pardon, remission

Sentence Usage: The police said that the attack was apparently to retaliate the attack
