Direction (1-5): Read the following sentence to find out whether there is any error in it. The error, if any, will be in one part of the sentence. The number corresponding to that part will be your answer. If the given sentence is correct as it is, mark the answer as ‘No error’. Ignore the errors of punctuation if any.

  1. Simika has been (1)/ dancing to the (2)/ melodious song, for 5 o’ clock(3)/ in the morning (4)
    1
    2
    3
    4
    No error
    Option C
‘Since’ should be used in place of ‘for’.
The preposition ‘for’ is used to mention an amount of time or space, which does not need to be exact. On the other hand, the preposition ‘since’ is used to refer to an exact point of time, which can be any past event or a specific time in the past, beginning sometime in the past and continuing until the present time.
Therefore, option C is the correct answer choice for this question.

    No error
    Option A
‘Faces’ should be used in place of ‘face’. Here, in the given sentence, ‘Movement’ is a singular subject. As a result, it will take a singular verb with it.
Therefore option A is the correct answer choice for this question.

  3. Nearly 15 million Americans live in sparsely populated communities where, (1)/ there is no broadband internet service at all (2)/ a stark digital divide across America among those (3)/ with access to uber-fast connections and those with none (4)
    1

    3
    4
    No error
    Option C
‘Between’ should be used in place of ‘among’, since it mentions two entities-‘those with access to uber-fast connections’ and ‘those with none’.
‘Generally ‘between’ is used when we refer to two things which are clearly separated. ‘Among’ is used to talk about things which are not clearly separated because they are part of a group or crowd or mass of objects.
Therefore option C is the correct answer choice for this question.

  4. Jacques has in his Army, (1)/ eight Generals, six Colonels, (2)/ seven Majors and five Captains, beside (3)/ one private for them to command. (4)

    No error
    Option C
The word ‘beside’ is a preposition, which means ‘next to’ or ‘at the side of’. The preposition ‘beside’ physically places two nouns side by side.
Example: – Anirban sat beside Naina at the restaurant.
The word ‘besides’ can be used either as a preposition, meaning “in addition” or an adverb meaning “moreover.” Here in the given context it means “in addition to.”
Therefore, option C is the correct answer choice for this question.

    Option D
The use of retreated back becomes a superfluous error. It means that more than the required is given in the given sentence. Retreat means an act of moving back or withdrawing. All are correct
    Option A
When we use pronouns as the subject, and all the three persons act as the subject of the sentence, and are connected by ‘and’, the sequence of the pronouns should be ‘second person’, ’third person’, and then the first person’. The verb should be plural verb. The speaker is the first person ‘I’, the listener is the second person ‘you’, and the non active one is the third person ‘He’, ‘she’ or anyone.

    Option C
Apostrophe is not used with non-living things. Hence we should use ‘Principal of the college’. Again we do not use the preposition ‘from’ with the word ‘start’. We use ‘on’ instead.

The structure should be:-‘A great many+plural noun+plural verb’.
The correct sentence will be: ‘A great many students are protesting against the college authorities.’
